Ravnik Amethystward
Ravnik Amethystward
At the table
Voice
His voice is a warm, slightly rough rumble, with a dry rasp at the ends of phrases from years of smoke, dust, and river wind. He projects from his chest and does not need to shout to be heard across a crowded room. When angry, he speaks more directly and uses fewer explanations, but his volume stays level.
His words come in a steady, practical rhythm, shaped by years of calling instructions over hammering, rain, and river noise. He tends to use short sentences when danger is near and fuller, more careful explanations when someone is upset. His vocabulary is rich in workaday images of load-bearing beams, bad joints, and weathered roads.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Ravnik responds best to candor and practical cooperation. He offers help without demanding a confession, but may become wary if someone treats dependents as property or dismisses civilian safety. Show him that others can make their own choices and he will quickly become a steadfast ally. Ask about the marsh flowers or the old iron symbol to reach his more vulnerable side.
Goal
Find the child who survived the flood, learn what became of them, and make peace with the fact that protecting someone is not the same as deciding their life for them.
Motivation
Ravnik wants to make his strength useful without turning care into a cage. The search for the flood survivor gives him a concrete purpose, while the disagreement with Daro forces him to confront how often his protection has become a way to manage his own fear.
Appearance
Ravnik is a tall, broad-shouldered copper dragonborn whose iridescent scales shift from warm bronze to russet as emotion moves through him. His amber eyes have a soft, attentive focus that makes even a hurried question feel heard. His smooth, hairless face is framed by two backward-sweeping horns, one wrapped in a tiny, carefully knotted charm. His plate armor is solid and serviceable, but he wears it with the straps drawn a little too tightly across his chest. When he waits, he rests his weight on the balls of his feet, as if bracing for a door to burst open. The surprising detail is that he keeps a tiny bundle of pressed marsh flowers tucked behind his holy symbol, replacing them whenever they crumble.
Clothing
Well-maintained plate armor with small, mismatched repairs at the joints, a travel-stained cream tabard bearing a simple sunburst, a dark blue cloak pinned high to keep it out of the way, and a belt hung with polished crystals and handmade protective charms. The armor is fitted tightly enough to look uncomfortable, and the old iron holy symbol under it is more worn than the bright one outside.
Body language
He stands forward on the balls of his feet, shoulders squared as if prepared to catch a falling beam. While listening, he turns his whole head toward the speaker and holds still. His thumb repeatedly rubs the edge of the old iron holy symbol beneath his breastplate; when embarrassed, his scales deepen toward russet and he clears his throat.

Background
Ravnik was raised among the kiln-workers and ferry families of Rillbend, a settlement built where a broad river shoals over copper-colored stone. He learned to repair armor from his mother, Sava, and to make small protective charms from his father, who insisted that a promise should be something a person could hold. Ravnik joined the Lantern Vow, a local order of paladins, after an epidemic left his younger brother, Daro, close to death. He prayed through the night beside Daro's cot and, at dawn, felt divine power answer. For years he believed that answer meant he had been chosen to keep every danger away from everyone he loved. That belief broke during the evacuation of a flooded hamlet: Ravnik held a bridge against raiders while his mentor, Oru, led villagers to higher ground. The bridge held, but Oru drowned returning for a child Ravnik had not known was still inside. Ravnik still carries Oru's plain iron holy symbol beside his own polished one. He now serves as an itinerant protector and healer, but the Lantern Vow wants him back to train new recruits, while his brother Daro, now a ferry-master, resents being treated as someone who must always be saved. Ravnik is trying to find the child from the flood, who survived and disappeared into the river towns.
Role in the story
A dependable ally, moral counterweight, or quest-giver whose search for a flood survivor can draw the party into river settlements, old evacuation routes, and a conflict between loyalty and letting others choose their own path.
