Dovran
Dovran
At the table
“Would you rather be lost in the rain, then?”
Voice
Dovran's voice has a dry, breathy rasp from years of calling directions across wet ground and breathing smoke from peat fires. He clips the ends of words when giving instructions, but lets vowels stretch when describing a place he loves. His laugh is a short huff, more canine than theatrical.
He speaks in practical images drawn from guiding: mud, water, tracks, and weather. His sentences are measured but not slow, and he often gives directions as if they were observations rather than instructions. When threatened, he becomes blunt and concrete instead of lowering his voice.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He begins as a helpful guide, offering shelter, local knowledge, and food. If challenged, he tries to redirect the conversation toward the group's safety and the fen's dangers. Show clues to his deception before it becomes a fight: too-fresh tracks that turn back, a missing campfire's smoke, or a captive's muffled call. Give players chances to notice, negotiate, resist, and rescue someone.
Goal
Stop the drainage crew before they destroy the fen's nesting pools, then persuade himself that he can protect people without imprisoning them.
Motivation
He wants the fen to remain a place where the vulnerable can hide, and he wants to believe his methods make him a guardian rather than a predator.
Appearance
Dovran is a lean, long-limbed wolf-person with smoke-brown fur that pales to wheat around his muzzle and throat. Rain has slicked the fur along his shoulders into dark, close ridges, while burrs and seed fluff cling to the shag at his ankles. He moves with a patient, measured sway, taking up more space than his narrow frame suggests; people often find themselves giving him room before they know why. A surprising detail for a forest predator is the little stitched map of local berry patches he keeps pinned inside his collar, carefully updated in tiny, neat marks.
Clothing
A dark green hooded mantle patched with reed matting, a sleeveless leather jerkin, and a belt with bone toggles. His clothes smell of damp leaves, crushed juniper, and woodsmoke.
Body language
He angles his body to block paths without seeming to, his ears tracking every shift in a conversation. When pleased, he rubs a thumb over the stitched map at his collar. When caught in a lie, he holds unnaturally still, tail tucked close rather than wagging or bristling.

Personality
12 traits and drivesDovran is attentive and almost tender with the frightened, but he becomes controlling when they refuse his help. In a calm mood he is dryly funny and patient; when his territory is threatened, he turns practical and implacable, treating conversation as a delay tactic. He hates needless pain, yet has convinced himself that a living captive is safer than a free person in danger.

Combat
AC 15 · HP 82 · 35 ft.He prefers misdirection, entangling growth, and distance. He casts control spells to split a group, then uses claws and bite against anyone isolated. He tries Gullet Refuge only when cornered, when a target is already grappled, or when a captive might serve as leverage. He does not swallow a creature simply for routine damage; he uses the ability as a frightening, consequential escalation.

Background
Dovran grew up guiding travelers through the reed-choked Fen of Persistent Burrs, where his mother, Orshana, taught him which paths flooded and which plants could close a wound. He learned early that people trusted a guide who listened more than he spoke. Years ago, he led a desperate band of poachers through a winter bog in return for medicine for his younger brother, Temir. They broke their bargain, set the wetland alight, and left Dovran trapped beneath a fallen alder. Temir died before spring. Dovran survived by hiding in a hollow beneath the roots, living on bitter roots and rainwater. That ordeal changed his understanding of refuge: he became convinced that safety means keeping people where danger cannot reach them, whether they agree or not. Now he lures trespassers with false trails and warm campfire stories, then swallows some alive into his magically expanded gullet when they discover the deception. His captive usually survives, but the experience is terrifying and can leave lasting harm. He is currently trying to keep a drainage crew from cutting a channel through the fen, while his old acquaintance, the poacher-turned-ferryman Uldai, is quietly selling the crew maps of its deepest pools.
Role in the story
A deceptive guide and morally compromised guardian who can be an uneasy ally, a rescue target's captor, or an antagonist whose genuine fear for the fen complicates a simple confrontation.

- Faction
- No formal faction. He protects the fen on his own terms and is currently entangled with the drainage crew.
