Appearance
Atrace is a narrow-shouldered human with weathered olive-brown skin roughened by dust, old paper, and years of cold underground air. Their movements are economical and oddly graceful, as if every step has already been measured between shelves. Fine white fibers cling permanently to their dark hair, giving it the appearance of frost even in summer. Their hands are broad at the knuckles, stained with blue-black ink, and surprisingly gentle when handling fragile pages. They wear a calm, almost severe expression until a child, a lost scholar, or a damaged book enters the room, at which point their entire face softens. The unexpected contradiction is that this meticulous keeper has a perpetually untucked shirt cuff and one stocking that is always visibly inside out.
“Measured and low, with clipped consonants and a faint Kestaki rhythm. Atrace pauses before important nouns, as if checking them against an internal index.”

Distinguishing Features
Their first audible response is usually a slow inhale through the nose followed by a faint throat-clearing.
Blue-black ink stains cover the pads of their fingers and never fully wash away.
A small brass classification tag is sewn into the back of their coat, bearing a catalog number that does not exist.
Their footsteps make almost no sound because they habitually walk in soft felt slippers.
They smell faintly of cedar dust, lamp oil, and dried orange peel.
Voice
“A dry, resonant contralto with a soft rasp from years of breathing archival dust. Before speaking, Atrace usually inhales slowly, clears their throat once, and waits until everyone is looking at them.”
Clothing
A charcoal vest over a cream shirt, both patched with careful rectangular stitches. They wear a long brown librarian's coat with many inner pockets, soft felt slippers reinforced with leather soles, a red thread bracelet from their younger sister, and a brass key ring tied to their belt with green cord.
Body Language
Atrace angles their body toward shelves rather than people, tilts their head when listening, and taps two fingers against their wrist whenever they are suppressing anger. When genuinely pleased, they lean forward like a plant reaching toward a window.
