The Bell Beneath Lantern Road
The Bell Beneath Lantern Road
Read aloud
Three road wardens vanished while pursuing the Lantern Road robbers, and the village reeve offers a reward for answers. The hook
Set the scene
Mara Venn meets the party in the village storehouse as rain taps on the shutters. A supply cart sits outside with one wheel broken and a lantern crushed under its axle. Mara offers a map of the Lantern Road and explains that the missing wardens were last seen near the old watchtower. As she speaks, a muddy footprint slowly appears on the inside of the storehouse door.
How Mara Venn asks
Mara Venn asks the party to meet privately in the village storehouse.
She offers a modest advance for supplies, shows them the missing wardens' route on a stained map, and admits the villagers are too frightened to travel the road.

A stone cellar beneath the watchtower, with a cracked arch, a shallow pool, and an iron bell-rope disappearing into darkness.
The party explores the chamber beneath the tower and confronts the Tower Shade. The threat can be fought, driven back, or contained by restoring the bell and sealing the threshold. The wardens may be found alive nearby, hiding from the voice in the dark.
The Bell BelowNextWith the wardens recovered and the tower's danger addressed, the party returns to the village to settle the road's fate.
Behind it
What people believe
Masked robbers have been stopping travelers on Lantern Road, and three village wardens have vanished while pursuing them.
The abandoned watchtower is the robbers' likely hideout, but the bell there rings at night despite its missing clapper. The village reeve asks the party to find the wardens, recover the stolen goods, and make the road safe again.
Background
For years, the old Lantern Road has carried charcoal, salt, and travelers between the hill villages.
Recently, a band of masked robbers began stopping carts near the road's abandoned watchtower. Survivors describe a second set of footprints following them through the mud, though no one was there when they turned around. The tower's bell has begun ringing on windless nights.
The stakes
If the party fails, the bandits continue preying on travelers while the presence beneath the tower grows bolder.
It may eventually lure people off the road with familiar voices and spread fear through the surrounding villages.
Encounters
2Ambush in the Cut
Combat or social
A narrow sunken road bordered by thorn hedges, a stalled supply cart, and shallow drainage ditches.
Foes
Lantern Road Lookout
Lantern Road Cutpurses
ComplicationIf the party fights near the cart, a panicked mule may bolt. Characters can calm it, cut it free, or avoid its path; treat the danger as a terrain complication rather than a separate monster.
ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use only the lookout and one cutpurse. For a larger or more capable party, add one cutpurse and give the lookout a clear escape route to summon help.
The Bell Below
Combat, exploration, or negotiation
A cramped watchtower chamber with a cracked bell overhead, a broken stair, loose stones, and a sealed cellar hatch.
Foes
Tower Shade
ComplicationThe bell's note causes echoes that seem to come from different directions. A character who pursues a false sound risks becoming separated, but can rejoin the group by following the bell's vibration through the stone.
ScalingFor a lower-level or smaller party, the Tower Shade withdraws after one strong hit or a successful attempt to silence the bell. For a larger or stronger party, it can briefly animate hanging chains or broken furniture as hazards. The Tower Shade is a custom supernatural threat, not an official D&D 5E creature.

How it ends
Rewards
Items
A hooded lantern with a shuttered blue-glass pane, a practical custom item with no assumed magical effect.
A road warden's silver whistle, recognized by local patrols.
On a win
The party finds the wardens, settles the immediate threat from the robbers, and prevents the presence beneath the tower from reaching the road.
They may restore the clapper and reinforce the cellar seal, destroy the bell and risk weakening the seal, or negotiate another solution. Their choices determine whether the Lantern Road reopens freely, remains guarded, or becomes a place locals avoid after sunset.
What it leaves open
If it fails
- If the party fails to capture or persuade Rusk, the bandits leave before the tower is secured.
- The gang escapes with its stolen goods, and Rusk spreads word that the party is responsible for the disappearances.
- If the bell is silenced without addressing the sealed cellar threshold, the haunting is delayed rather than ended.
- The presence remains bound but grows more active, causing nighttime apparitions and making the Lantern Road unsafe after dark.
- If the party abandons the search or takes too long, the wardens' trail fades into the surrounding hills.
- The missing wardens are not found in time, and Mara must close the road while their families lose hope.
Complications (d6)
- 1A sudden downpour erases tracks on the road and turns the slope near the watchtower into slick mud.
- 2A trapped cart mule bolts through the scene, dragging a supply crate and forcing everyone nearby to make room or risk being knocked down.
- 3The tower bell rings once without moving; every character who hears it catches a glimpse of a familiar person standing in the fog.
- 4A bandit lookout mistakes the party for a rival gang and signals the others with three sharp whistles.
- 5A lantern goes out, and a cold voice from the dark repeats the last sentence spoken aloud.
- 6A wounded traveler stumbles onto the road, carrying a stolen bandit token that makes the robbers assume the party has already chosen sides.
