The Opening

For three nights, a horde of legendary heroes has stood outside Veyr's Rest, demanding entry without raising a weapon. They claim they remember how to restore the broken world, but the refugees among them swear that these same heroes destroyed it once before. Before dawn, the city must decide whether to open the gate, drive them away, or learn what price their salvation demands.

Set the Scene

The party is summoned to the wall at moonrise. Below, hundreds of exhausted travelers stand in disciplined silence among broken banners and rusted weapons. At their front waits Ser Caldus Rho, a once-famous champion whose armor is cracked, weathered, and covered in names. Behind him, the Gate stones pulse faintly as if recognizing every member of the horde.

Mara Venn

Mara Venn brings the party to the wall under cover of darkness and asks them to serve as neutral witnesses. She cannot openly admit that the city council is divided, because several councilors already plan to open the gate and seize control of the returning heroes' relics.

Stakes

If the gates open carelessly, Veyr's Rest may be conquered from within or consumed by unstable memories. If the former heroes are rejected, the city preserves a damaged world while losing its best chance to heal it. If the Gate is used correctly, Mundus Spretus can be restored, but the people who caused its ruin must pay with their lives, identities, or existence.

Ticking Clock·At dawn, the Gate will open on its own. The Ashen Choir will arrive before then, and the city council will vote to either admit the former heroes or order the defenders to attack.

Background Lore

Mundus Spretus is a world built atop the ruins of countless failed ages. Every generation inherits broken monuments, contradictory histories, and fragments of impossible technology or sorcery. The fortified settlement of Veyr's Rest survives because its walls were raised around the last stable Gate, a sealed threshold said to connect the present world to the lost age when reality was whole.

What the World Knows

A horde of former heroes has gathered outside Veyr's Rest and demands entry. They claim to remember how to restore Mundus Spretus, but the city has only their word, and many refugees insist that these heroes caused the world's ruin. The party must investigate the claim, keep the peace, and decide whether the Gate should be opened before the Ashen Choir arrives.
