The Opening

A sealed district beneath the city has opened from within, and people wearing the names of citizens declared dead eight centuries ago are walking out of it. The city authorities want the entrance closed before anyone learns what happened, while one survivor begs you to descend and find her family. Somewhere below, an old bell is ringing for the living.

Set the Scene

The adventure opens in the rain-soaked lower quarter of the modern capital. A crowd has gathered around a sunken plaza where an ancient bronze door stands open by several inches. From the gap comes warm air, the smell of ash, and the sound of a child reciting names in a language no living scholar recognizes. Archivist Maelin Voss arrives with sealed orders, while Sera Vale pushes through the crowd and claims that her family has been waiting below for eight hundred years.

Archivist Maelin Voss

Archivist Maelin Voss approaches the party in private after witnessing the door open. She offers official payment for an investigation but insists that no public account of the district should be released until the city council has reviewed the evidence. Sera Vale interrupts before the agreement is finalized and warns that the people below will resist anyone who treats them as a historical curiosity.

Stakes

If the party fails, the Census Engine may expand its enclosure into the modern capital, trapping thousands of people in a shared timeless district. If the party destroys it carelessly, the descendants may lose their identities and the city may lose the only proof of its historical crime. If the party succeeds, the capital must decide whether truth, justice, and citizenship are worth the disruption they bring.

Ticking Clock·The Ark door will remain stable for roughly six hours after opening. Each hour, the Census Engine claims a new section of the modern city’s underground infrastructure. At the six-hour mark, the city watch will collapse the entrance unless the party has sent a clear signal that survivors remain inside.

Background Lore

Eight centuries ago, the district of Veyr Hollow was sealed beneath the capital after a catastrophe known as the Ash Census. Official records state that every citizen within the district died in a single night. The district was entombed behind a monumental gate and gradually erased from maps, memory, and law. Recently, the sealed Ark district has begun opening from within. Pale lights move behind its doors, old bells ring beneath the streets, and descendants of the supposedly dead have emerged wearing the names and insignia of the vanished population.

What the World Knows

A sealed Ark district beneath the city has opened from within. Its inhabitants claim descent from citizens who were officially recorded as dead eight centuries ago, and some have begun emerging into the modern city. The characters must descend before the authorities close the entrance, discover why the district survived, and decide whether its people should be freed, contained, or brought into the light.
