The Opening

An expedition has uncovered a temple whose altar still grants miracles, but every answered prayer costs the petitioner a memory. The expedition leader wants you to find the missing surveyors, document the ruin, and make certain no one prays again. Then one of the survivors returns unable to remember why she came.

Set the Scene

The expedition's camp stands beneath a cliff split by a newly exposed stairway. Packs lie open, lanterns burn unattended, and a trail of red thread leads into the darkness. Professor Elian Voss explains that three surveyors entered the temple six hours ago. One returned carrying a bowl of clear water, unable to remember his own name. Mira Sen sits beside him, clutching a tablet on which she has written the same sentence twelve times: I came here to save someone.

Professor Elian Voss

Professor Elian Voss approaches the party at the expedition camp with a sealed map case, an exhausted witness, and a request for discretion. He offers payment for recovering his people and insists that the ruin must not become a pilgrimage site. He does not initially reveal that he sent the first survey team into the temple after finding evidence that the altar could restore memories.

  2. 02
The surveyor who returned from the ruin has begun calling strangers by the names of dead relatives.
  3. 03
A god with no name sleeps beneath the eastern ridge.

The expedition found a door that opens only when everyone present agrees on what happened in the past.
  5. 05
People who drink from the temple's spring remember being worshippers there, even if they have never seen the place.
Stakes

If the altar remains active, desperate people will trade away their identities for miracles, and the Nameless God-Shape will gain enough stolen memory to become independent. If the party destroys it carelessly, the temple's accumulated memories may be released into the surrounding region, causing mass confusion and identity bleed. The expedition members may be saved, but not necessarily restored to who they were before entering.

Ticking Clock·The altar grows stronger each time a miracle is requested. After three additional miracles, the Nameless God-Shape can manifest outside the sanctuary. After six, it can leave the temple through any person who remembers its name or hears its voice.

Background Lore

Long before the present age, the hill-temple of Veyr Anuun served a god whose name was deliberately removed from every surviving record. Pilgrims came to its altar seeking healing, safe births, clear harvests, and absolution. The god answered, but each miracle consumed a memory from the petitioner, beginning with the least painful memory and moving toward the most important. When the temple's priests discovered that the god had no body, no voice, and no independent will beyond the altar itself, they abandoned the sanctuary and sealed it beneath the earth. Centuries later, an expedition has uncovered the ruin, and the altar has begun answering prayers again.

What the World Knows

An expedition has uncovered the ruined temple of Veyr Anuun, where an ancient altar still answers prayers. The miracles are real, but each one costs the petitioner a memory. Several members of the expedition are missing, and the party must explore the temple, learn how its power works, and decide whether the altar should be sealed, destroyed, or used to save those already harmed. Sister Caldris, a surviving expedition member, believes the altar is benevolent and may try to protect it.
