The Bell Beneath the Mended Sail

A stolen sail, a drowned bell, and one tide to mend what the sea remembers.

Read aloud

A bell rings from beneath the harbor, though every ship in port is tied fast. At the Mended Sail, owner Mara Venn shows you a ceremonial sail that has vanished from her locked workshop, leaving only seawater and a trail of blue thread. She asks you to find it before the tide turns tonight.

Objectives

  1. 1Discover who took the ceremonial sail and where it has gone.
  2. 2Reach the Blackwater Shoal wreck and confront the reason behind the theft.
  3. 3Stop the wreck's bell from calling danger toward the harbor.
  4. 4Convince the town to mark Blackwater Shoal as a memorial and hazard.Optional

The clock

The party has until the next high tide, roughly several hours after the investigation begins, to reach the wreck and act. The rising water progressively closes paths through the shoal and makes the final encounter more dangerous.

The hook

Set the scene

Read the hook aloud at the Mended Sail. Mara has laid out her workbench, showing a locked cabinet with its hasp intact, a damp patch on the floor, and a short length of blue thread. The shop is crowded with customers' sails, so any investigation risks damaging someone else's property or drawing curious neighbors. Tovin is present but evasive; he is frightened that his copied stitching will make him look guilty.

How Mara Venn asks

Mara approaches the party in her shop after hearing them ask about the underwater bell or seeing them arrive in the harbor.

Rumours

Roll a rumour

1“Mara Venn once refused a lucrative contract because the buyer wanted a sail repaired without removing its old stitches.”
2“The bell at Blackwater Shoal is supposed to ring only when the tide is moving out, but last night it rang at high tide.”
3“Nessa Quill says the shoal shifts after storms and that old charts place the Bellwether wreck in the wrong spot.”
4“Tovin has been practicing a strange stitching pattern on scraps, though he insists he invented it himself.”

    1. The Empty Cabinet

The crowded workroom of the Mended Sail, among hanging canvas, benches, needles, and half-finished repairs.

The party examines the locked cabinet, the wet floor, and the blue thread while questioning Mara and Tovin. A careful approach uncovers evidence that the thief had shop access or copied a workshop technique.

NextA trail of matching thread and a witness report point toward the lantern pier. If the party stalls, the harbor bell sounds and Nessa arrives with a warning about the tide.

    2. Lanterns in the Harbor

The lantern pier and neighboring boat sheds, where rumor, watch patrols, and wet planks make a direct search difficult.

Nessa can guide the party through the harbor's back lanes and explain the shoal's shifting approaches. The party can question dockworkers, persuade the watch to open a closed pier, or follow the sound of the bell.

NextThe party finds evidence that Captain Sorn has taken the sail toward Blackwater Shoal. A skiff or Nessa's pilot route gets them there before the tide turns.

    3. The Wreck at Low Tide

Blackwater Shoal at low tide, with a tilted wreck surrounded by pools, exposed rocks, and tangled rigging.

The party crosses exposed shoal and reaches the Bellwether wreck. They can search for the sail, inspect the ship's remains, or negotiate with Sorn. The ship's bell reacts to disturbances, and the tide limits how long they can remain.

NextOnce the party understands what binds the bell, they must choose whether to recover the sail, break its stitches, or help Sorn attempt her own solution.

    4. The Last Stitch

The wreck's sloping deck and torn sail, with the tide climbing through the gaps in the hull.

The party makes its final choice as the water rises. Sorn may cooperate if treated with respect and shown the truth; otherwise, the bell-woken presence presses the confrontation. Success depends on a concrete action, not merely winning a fight.

NextThe bell's silence, or continued ringing, determines the journey back to town and the consequences for the Mended Sail.

    5. A Shop Reopened

The Mended Sail at dawn, where repaired canvas dries in the open doorway and the harbor's morning bells sound normally.

Back in town, the party reports what happened to Mara, Tovin, and the harbor watch. They can decide whether to reveal the names in the sail, protect Sorn's grief from public scrutiny, or press the town to mark the shoal.

NextClose the adventure with the party's chosen legacy, then use an open-ended hook if the group wants to continue.

Behind it

What people believe

A ceremonial sail has been stolen from the Mended Sail, a waterfront repair shop.

Background

The Mended Sail is a repair shop and chandlery on the waterfront, known for restoring storm-damaged sails, rigging, and canvas.

The stakes

If the sail remains aboard the wreck, the storm-memory grows stronger and draws vessels toward Blackwater Shoal.

Encounters

2
  • The Lantern Pier Ambush

    Combat or avoidable confrontation

Narrow, wet pier planks; stacked lobster pots; mooring ropes; water deep enough to threaten anyone knocked overboard.

    Foes

    • 2 to 4 Tide-Touched Salvagers

    • 1 Bell-Woken Deckhand

ComplicationA rising tide begins to flood the lower walkways. At the end of each round or meaningful exchange, the GM can make a route harder to use or place an exposed character at risk of being swept into the harbor.

ScalingFor a smaller or less experienced party, use two salvagers and omit the deckhand. For a larger or more capable party, add two salvagers or give the deckhand a once-per-scene call that distracts or disorients nearby characters.

  • The Wreck Below Blackwater Shoal

    Combat, exploration, or negotiation

A half-submerged shipwreck at low tide, with unstable decks, dangling rigging, narrow passages, and pockets of air that will vanish as the tide rises.

    Foes

    • 1 Bell-Woken Deckhand

    • 2 Drowned Rigging Knots, custom animated hazards

ComplicationThe wreck's bell rings whenever someone disturbs the sail or the ship's nameplate. The sound draws the Bell-Woken Deckhand and makes careful movement or delicate work more difficult until the bell is silenced.

ScalingFor a gentler finale, the rigging knots hinder movement rather than directly attack, and the deckhand can be calmed by speaking the ship's name. For a tougher finale, add one knot and let the wreck shift with each strong wave.

  • Mara Venn

QuestgiverQuestgiver and owner of the Mended Sail

WantsMara wants the stolen sail returned and the Mended Sail's reputation protected, but she is also afraid the rush job has awakened something she does not understand.

“I can mend canvas, not the sea. But something out there is using my work to call a ship home.”
  • Tovin Reed

Witness and apprentice at the Mended Sail

WantsTovin wants to prove he is more than an apprentice and conceal that he secretly copied the ceremonial sail's unusual stitching to impress a rival sailmaker.

“That stitching is mine. The pattern is an old harbor mark, though I never taught it to anyone.”
  • Captain Ilyra Sorn

Antagonist and keeper of a hidden harbor secret

WantsCaptain Ilyra Sorn wants the ceremonial sail returned to the wreck of her former ship, believing it can lay her drowned crew to rest. She will bargain before fighting, but will not abandon the plan easily.

“I only need the sail for one night. After that, the tide can take what it came for.”
  • Nessa Quill

    Ally and retired harbor pilot

WantsOld Nessa wants to prevent another harbor disaster and persuade the town to finally mark the dangerous shoals where her family ship sank.

“If you hear the bell, do not answer it. And if you see a lantern beneath the waves, do not follow it alone.”

How it ends

Rewards

Experience: Award experience appropriate to the system for completing the investigation, surviving or resolving the wreck encounter, and making a consequential choice. In a milestone system, this quest is a suitable step toward the next milestone.
Gold: Mara offers 60 to 100 gold pieces, or an equivalent local reward, depending on the party's leverage and the town's means.
In the story: The names sewn into the sail can be returned to the families of the dead. If the party protects Tovin, Mara gives him a chance to stay on as her apprentice.
Standing: The harbor watch and local sailors regard the party as reliable if they prevent further danger and share the wreck's location. Reputation suffers if the party leaves the threat active or causes avoidable damage in port.

Items

  • A weatherproof repair kit with sailcloth, waxed thread, needles, and cord

  • A harbor chart annotated by Nessa with safe approaches to Blackwater Shoal

  • One useful salvage item chosen by the GM from the wreck

On a win

The bell falls silent and the harbor is safe from the wreck's repeating storm-memory.

What it leaves open

If the party unseams the memorial stitches, the names in the hem may reveal relatives or allies elsewhere in the region.
Captain Sorn may ask the party to help recover the Bellwether's logbook, which could prove how the ship was lost.
The harbor watch may want the party to investigate other wrecks where unexplained bells or lights have been reported.
Mara's late mentor left behind a ledger of unusual repairs, including work for clients who paid in old coins and refused to give their names.

If it fails

The party cannot track the stolen sail from the workshop.
If the party fails to find the lantern pier before the tide turns, Captain Sorn takes the sail to the wreck. The party can still pursue her, but the final scene begins with less time and more dangerous footing.
The party does not win Tovin's trust.
If the party treats Tovin as the culprit and drives him away, he hides what he knows. The harbor loses a useful witness, and Mara may refuse to lend the party equipment.
The party does not recover or safely neutralize the ceremonial sail.
If the party leaves the sail aboard the wreck, its bell continues to draw danger toward the harbor. Within days, the town must close a portion of the waterfront and the Mended Sail loses customers.
The party resolves the immediate threat through force but does not secure a peaceful settlement.
If Captain Sorn is killed or publicly exposed without hearing her out, her surviving associates may retaliate, while the truth of the wreck remains unresolved.

Complications (d6)

  1. 1A sudden squall tears a loose awning from the Mended Sail, forcing the party to secure it before it damages nearby boats. The noise draws attention from the harbor watch.
  2. 2A strip of blue sailcloth is found tied around a party member's gear. It is damp with seawater and bears the same distinctive stitch pattern as the ceremonial sail.
  3. 3The harbor watch closes the nearest pier after a reported sighting, adding a delay and requiring the party to persuade a watch officer or find another route.
  4. 4Tovin admits he copied part of the sail's stitching, but only if the party promises not to let Mara dismiss him before hearing the full story.
  5. 5A bell sounds from below the water. Anyone who follows it without a guide loses time in a maze of slippery pilings and tide pools.
  6. 6Captain Sorn's associates offer the party a share of recovered cargo if they stop searching the wreck until the next low tide.
