The Opening

The Bloomtide Festival begins tomorrow, but the fountains of High Garden have started running black. Last night, the city's magistrate found a message carved into the old rose bridge: LET THE ROOTS DRINK, OR LET THE CITY DIE. Find who is sabotaging the aqueduct before the festival crowd arrives.

Set the Scene

Read aloud: High Garden should smell of roses, wet stone, and warm bread. Instead, the fountains cough up dark water while pale petals drift through the streets like ash. Above the eastern terraces, the old rose bridge is wrapped in vines that were not there yesterday, and somewhere beneath your feet, something large knocks once against the foundations.

Stakes

If the party fails, High Garden may flood, lose its water supply, or be transformed into a living wilderness. If they succeed without addressing the underlying injustice, the crisis will return within a generation.

Ticking Clock·The Rootheart ritual completes at the end of the next major scene after the party reaches the Conservatory. Every substantial delay causes another district fountain to turn black, increases civilian danger, and makes negotiation more difficult.

Background Lore

High Garden is a hilltop city of terraced orchards, glass conservatories, old stone walls, and aristocratic estates. Beneath its public beauty runs the Verdant Aqueduct, an ancient irrigation system that carries water from the royal springs to every district. For generations, the city has celebrated the annual Bloomtide Festival, when the gardens open to visitors and the first white roses of spring are presented to the people.

What the World Knows

During the eve of the Bloomtide Festival, High Garden's fountains turn black and the old aqueduct begins to fail. Magistrate Elian Voss hires the characters to investigate the sabotage, protect the city, and prevent the festival from becoming a public disaster. The trail leads beneath the gardens, where an extremist named Cale Orwyn is attempting to awaken an ancient power buried below the city.
