The characters arrive in Bellwether beneath a gray dawn. The village square is packed with frightened residents, several clutching their bellies while others argue that the condition is a punishment, an invasion, or a miracle. Reeve Mara Venn brings the characters into the meeting hall, where Sister Elian has prepared a map of the village and marks three clues: identical silver crescent bruises on the affected villagers, black silt found in the well buckets, and a lullaby heard beneath the mill.

Mara Venn approaches the party in the village square after hearing that they have dealt with curses or unexplained magic before. She offers 150 gold pieces, free lodging, and the village's future cooperation. Background Lore
The village of Bellwether was built beside the buried ruins of an ancient fertility shrine. Generations ago, its wardens sealed a dormant entity called the Cradle Below beneath the shrine, binding it with a yearly offering of grain, milk, and song. This year, a desperate village elder altered the ritual to save the harvest, accidentally awakening the entity and causing every woman of childbearing age in the village to become visibly eight months pregnant overnight.
Bellwether has suffered an impossible magical event. Every young and adult woman in the village became eight months pregnant in a single night, yet none remembers a conception, and the healer can find no ordinary sign of life within the pregnancies. The village's leaders believe the cause lies somewhere in the abandoned shrine beneath the old well, but fear and rumor are spreading faster than facts. The characters must investigate the village, uncover the connection between the pregnancies and the shrine, and find a way to end the phenomenon before it reaches its final stage.
