The Herd That Remembers
Read Aloud
Four black-veined elk burst from the brush and skid across the mud, their antlers dripping dark fluid. Behind them, a huge treant attempts to hauls itself from the earth as green light pulses through its roots. A white-eyed doe appears beside the shrine stones and speaks inside your minds: “Do not make this pain louder.”
Battlefield Zones
1
Rift Clearing
A muddy crossing between leaning oaks; slick ground counts as difficult terrain in a 10-ft. patch.
2
Broken Wagon
A split wagon and scattered grain sacks provide half cover.
3
Shrine Stones
Old shrine stones circle a dead stump; a creature here can attempt the calming ritual.
Terrain Levers
- Rift pulse: a creature within 5 ft. of the green light makes a DC 11 Constitution save or takes 1d4 necrotic damage, half on success.
- Root snare: an action against the exposed roots, DC 12 Nature or Athletics, restrains one creature until the end of its next turn.
- Broken shrine stones: a creature can use an action to form a ward; the next calming check made before the end of the round has advantage.
- Druidic Focus: A druid in the party can use a herbal poultice or druidic focus as a bonus action to attempt a calming ritual (DC 12 Animal Handling or Nature).
- Skill Challenge: Animal Handling DC 12 to soothe deer
