Senn Vok
Senn Vok
At the table
Voice
A dry baritone with a rasp like a quill dragged across rough paper, usually quiet enough that listeners lean closer. His laugh is sudden, breathy, and unexpectedly young.
His voice is dry, low, and carefully measured, with a river-port accent softened by years of dealing with merchants. He pronounces names correctly even when he dislikes the people who bear them. When angry, his volume drops rather than rises. When frightened, every sentence becomes perfectly grammatical.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Senn begins guarded, testing visitors with small factual questions and watching whether they interrupt, boast, or ask about money first. He trusts people who notice workers in the room and distrusts anyone who treats paperwork as harmless. If approached with proof of abuse, he offers practical help in stages, never revealing the full network until the visitors have demonstrated discretion. If threatened, he bargains with information, not sentiment.
Goal
Bring down Vokren Maritime Company by exposing its debt-contract network while moving every endangered worker to safety before the company's annual audit.
Motivation
Senn believes numbers become moral the moment they determine whether a person eats, sleeps safely, or remains free. He wants to turn the company's own records against it, but he also longs for one honest life in which he does not need a second ledger beneath every conversation.
Appearance
Senn Vok is a narrow, stooped half-elf with the dry, corded frame of someone who has spent fifty years leaning over ledgers and cargo manifests. His left eye is gone, the socket covered by a square of dark blue cloth tied behind his head, while his right eye remains sharp and brown, bright as wet chestnut beneath a shelf of white brows. His jaw works slightly when he thinks, revealing a row of small, square teeth worn flat from chewing bitterroot. His hands are the first thing most people notice: knuckled, ink-stained, and thickened at the fingertips, with nails polished smooth from years of turning paper. He moves with a careful, shuffling patience until a document is threatened, then crosses a room with startling speed, cane tapping like a metronome. He smells of lamp oil, old wool, salt, and fennel tea. For all his weathered severity, he laughs easily at bad jokes, throwing his head back and showing the missing tooth near the back of his jaw.
Clothing
A salt-stiffened brown coat over a faded green waistcoat, linen shirt, wool trousers, soft dock boots, and a blue cloth eye covering. Brass spectacles hang from a cord around his neck even though he uses only one lens. His cuffs are reinforced with stitched scraps of sailcloth.
Body language
Senn rests both hands on his cane when listening, though he rarely needs its support. His remaining eye fixes on the speaker's hands rather than their face. When lying, he smooths the corner of an imaginary page with his thumb. When angry, his jaw shifts from side to side and his cane stops tapping.

Distinguishing features
Personality
17 traits and drivesSenn is compassionate in practical, unsentimental ways. He will mend a stranger's boot, hide a family from collectors, or falsify a death certificate without asking for thanks, yet he becomes miserly with personal affection and deflects any attempt to care for him. Around workers he is warm, teasing, and almost grandfatherly. Around employers he is dry, deferential, and difficult to read. He hates cruelty more than he loves justice, which makes him capable of patient mercy one day and cold revenge the next. His greatest internal conflict is that he wants to believe his work is a form of accounting, even though some of the debts he collects are his own.

Background
Senn was born in a river port where half-elves were trusted to translate between dock crews, merchants, and customs officers, but rarely invited into any of their homes. His mother taught him Elven script and his father taught him how to weigh grain by hand. As a young clerk, Senn discovered that the shipping company he served kept two ledgers, one for the harbor magistrate and one for the buyers who purchased debt contracts. Workers who borrowed against wages could be sold into years of labor when a voyage failed, a crate vanished, or an employer simply decided the numbers no longer favored mercy. Senn began by correcting rounding errors. Then he invented damaged cargo, misplaced signatures, and storms that never occurred. Twenty-three years ago, a warehouse fire killed his younger sister, Orsa, after her debt-holder refused to release her from a locked bunkhouse. Senn found the falsified order that could have freed her, hidden beneath a shipping seal he had prepared himself. The discovery changed him. Since then, he has quietly erased debts rather than merely soften them. He now works for the Vokren Maritime Company, where his talent has made him indispensable and dangerous. His employer suspects the books are wrong, a former apprentice is blackmailing him, and a group of freed workers has begun using his old cipher without understanding how closely the company is watching.
Role in the story
Senn is a reluctant ally, information broker, and possible witness to an institutional crime. He can guide the party into the hidden economy of debt contracts, but his secrets may turn him into a liability or force the characters to decide whether justice requires exposing his past.
