The Ashen Warden
The Ashen Warden
At the table
Voice
A dry, smoke-roughened voice with a faint rasp at the back of the throat, as if he has spent too many hours calling directions through ash-filled air. His breath catches slightly after long sentences, but his instructions carry cleanly outdoors.
He speaks with the clipped precision of someone who has spent years giving instructions over wind and crackling brush. His vocabulary is full of practical terms for smoke, slope, and tree cover. He pauses to listen before answering, and his jokes arrive dry and understated.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He responds best to practical honesty and people who take precautions seriously. Offer a clear plan and he will share what he knows; boast or conceal a risk and he will quietly verify everything before cooperating. Earn his trust by helping someone vulnerable without expecting praise.
Goal
Find who is removing the forest boundary markers and learn why ash is appearing where no fire has burned, before the next dry season makes the mystery a catastrophe.
Motivation
To prevent another preventable death and to prove, through useful work, that he is more than the man who failed to bring six people home.
Appearance
The Ashen Warden looks as though he has walked out of a kiln and never quite washed the last season away. Fine grey ash settles in the creases around his mouth and beneath his fingernails, while the rest of his face is scrubbed with almost fussy care. His dark hair is cropped close at the sides and combed into a narrow, stubborn ridge. He moves with the measured, heel-first tread of someone used to testing unstable ground, then can cross a room in a sudden, startling rush. He smells of woodsmoke, bitter herbs, and damp wool. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny, brightly painted wooden bird pinned to his soot-dark coat, and polishes it with his thumb whenever he thinks no one is looking.
Clothing
A smoke-grey wool coat with carefully darned elbows, a high leather collar, and a line of brass hooks for tools. The coat fits poorly across his shoulders, likely borrowed years ago, but its cuffs are meticulously scrubbed. A soot-stained scarf is wrapped over his nose in bad air. The small painted bird at his breast is the only vivid color he wears.
Body language
He stands with his weight slightly forward, as if expecting to move at the first change in the wind. His hands are steady when tending a fire and restless when forced to wait. When another person speaks, he watches their mouth and hands in turn. He rubs the wooden bird's painted wing with his thumb when a conversation turns toward the dead.

Background
Born in a charcoal-burning hamlet beside the black-pine slopes of Mount Kest, Samir learned the trade of fire-watch from his mother, Darya, who could read wind shifts by the movement of chimney smoke. At twenty-six, he ignored her warning that a dry lightning storm had turned the upper forest dangerous. He led a rescue party into a ravine to reach trapped woodcutters; a sudden firestorm cut off their retreat. Samir survived by sealing himself in an old stone kiln, but the six people he had meant to save died in the smoke. He abandoned charcoal work and trained with the wardens who protected the forest roads, becoming a ranger and a tireless tracker of unnatural fires and the dead they sometimes leave behind. He now patrols the slopes alone more often than his orders require. His younger sister, Darya, runs the family kiln and believes he is punishing himself instead of helping the living. He also sends supplies to the family of one woodcutter who died that day, hiding the gifts behind a local drover's name. Lately, the forest's ash has been appearing in places no fire has touched, and someone has been removing old boundary markers.
