At the table

Voice

A bright, resonant speaking voice with a little rasp from years of projecting through smoky rooms and over clattering tables. Their breath is controlled from dance training, so a long sentence can arrive without strain. Their laugh is sudden and unguarded, while their stage introductions have a clear, emphatic snap.

Gülara speaks in clear, forward bursts shaped by years of projecting over noisy rooms. Their phrasing is rhythmic without being sung, with crisp consonants when giving directions and rounded vowels when teasing an audience. They borrow practical words from the backstage: cues, marks, props, and exits.

Speech patterns

Uses a warm greeting and a memorable nickname before asking what someone really wants.
Turns observations into playful compliments, then watches closely to see how the person reacts.
When discussing theater, speaks in practical terms about timing, sightlines, and who has the spotlight.
When threatened, drops the banter and gives short, unmistakable instructions.

How to play them

Gülara welcomes strangers with humor and a little theatrical attention, then gives them a chance to show whether they are kind when nobody is applauding. They respond well to honesty, practical offers of help, and respect for the theater's workers. Threats against their chosen family make them direct and difficult to distract.

Goal

Prove that the former troupe manager stole the company purse and abandoned the performers, then keep the Sedge Bend theater independent and open.

Motivation

Gülara wants a community where performers and workers are protected even when the audience has gone home. Their drive to expose betrayal is tangled up with a need to prove they can prevent it from happening again.

Appearance

A purple-skinned tiefling whose pink dance dress seems to catch every stray ray of lamplight. Their broad, black bowl-cut sits glossy and precise above sharply brushed green eyeshadow and startlingly red lipstick. A wide smile arrives first, bright enough to make strangers smile back before they realize Gülara is studying them. They move with a dancer's exact turns and planted steps, but their tail gives away every private reaction, curling into a question mark when curious and snapping once when annoyed. The unexpected detail: despite the theatrical glamour, their nails are kept clipped short and stained with blue-black ink from constant note-taking.

Clothing

A full pink dance dress with layered skirts, reinforced seams, hidden pockets, and a discreet leather belt beneath the waistline. They wear polished ankle boots, a short black cape for cold weather, and a scattering of glass-bead jewelry that catches stage lights. Green eyeshadow and vivid red lipstick are applied with ritual precision.

Body language

They stand as if a stage mark has been painted beneath each foot. Their shoulders open toward whoever feels excluded, while their tail often points toward the person they distrust. Their grin is genuine but not always reassuring; when someone is in danger, it disappears and their posture becomes economical and ready.

An open, almost disarming smile that vanishes instantly when someone is in danger.
A dancer's planted pivots and a tail that signals irritation before their face does.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Gülara is generous with attention but guarded with trust. Onstage they are radiant, teasing, and quick to make a stranger feel included; backstage they are exacting about safety and impatient with people who shirk shared work. When frightened, they become funnier. When someone is being bullied, the smile leaves and they act with startling speed.

Alignment
Chaotic good

Quirks

Tests the sound of a room by tapping one fingernail against a glass before choosing where to stand.
Keeps a private list of audience members who laugh at the wrong moment, then tries to win them over at the next show.
When thinking, folds a scrap of paper into tiny stage curtains.
Tucks a lipstick into the safest pocket they own, even when dressed for a fight.
Refuses to begin a meal until everyone at the table has been offered some.

Habits

Checks the exits and counts the audience before beginning a performance.
When nervous, turns a ring around their thumb and makes a joke before answering a serious question.
After a successful show, stays behind to help strike the set instead of accepting praise.
When angered, becomes brisk and physically direct, setting objects down with exact care rather than raising their voice.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.

Gülara stays behind sturdier allies, using control and distraction to disrupt dangerous foes. They open with faerie fire or dissonant whispers, maintain concentration from cover, and use Bardic Inspiration to help an ally land a decisive attack or resist a dangerous effect. If cornered, they use their rapier and dancer's footwork to disengage. They prefer surrender and escape over killing, but will risk themself to protect a trapped bystander.

Spells

Dissonant Whispers (level 1, enchantment). A creature within range must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it takes psychic damage and must use its reaction, if available, to move as far as its speed allows away from Gülara. On a success, it takes half damage and does not move.
Faerie Fire (level 1, evocation). A 20-foot-radius sphere of scintillating light outlines creatures and objects. Attacks against affected creatures have advantage, and affected creatures cannot benefit from being invisible. Concentration, up to 1 minute.
Minor Illusion (cantrip, illusion). Creates a 15-foot cube of sound that can be heard up to 100 feet away. Gülara uses the sound to create a distraction or cover a brief conversation.
Prestidigitation (cantrip, transmutation). Creates one of several harmless sensory effects, such as a shower of sparks, a faint sound, or a small gust of air.
Cure Wounds (level 1, evocation). A creature Gülara touches regains hit points. This spell has no effect on undead or constructs.
Charm Person (level 1, enchantment). A humanoid must make a Wisdom saving throw or become charmed for up to 1 minute. The spell ends early if Gülara or their companions harm the target. Concentration.
Enthrall (level 2, enchantment). Up to three creatures Gülara can see within 60 feet must make a Wisdom saving throw or be charmed for up to 1 minute. The spell requires concentration.
Minor Illusion (cantrip, illusion). Gülara creates a faintly visible, harmless sound or image of an object within range. The illusion lasts for up to 1 minute and can be dismissed as an action.
Enhance Ability (level 2, transmutation). A creature Gülara touches gains advantage on Dexterity checks. The spell requires concentration and lasts up to 1 hour.
Fear (level 3, illusion). A creature within range must make a Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of an illusion of its worst fear for up to 1 minute. The creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns. Concentration.

Actions

Jeweled Rapier. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage. Gülara uses a jeweled rapier disguised as a costume accessory.
Light Crossbow. Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, range 80/320 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage.
Barbed Refrain. Gülara performs a cutting joke, pointed compliment, or flamboyant insult at one creature within 60 feet that can hear them. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take psychic damage and have disadvantage on the next attack roll it makes before the end of its next turn. This is a custom action, not a spell.

Reactions

Cutting Timing. When a creature Gülara can see within 60 feet hits an ally with an attack, Gülara expends one use of Bardic Inspiration. The ally adds the d6 to its AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss.
Hellish Rebuke. When Gülara takes damage from a creature within 60 feet that they can see, they can cast hellish rebuke as a 2nd-level spell once per long rest. The attacker makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking fire damage on a failure or half as much on a success.

Background

Gülara grew up helping their aunt Seliya repair costumes in a cramped room above the old theater at Sedge Bend. Their mother, a caravan medic, was often away, and the theater's performers became the family who taught Gülara how to mend a hem, read a room, and turn a heckler's attention into applause. At nineteen, Gülara joined a traveling troupe. During a fire at a roadside inn, they used their infernal resistance to carry two trapped children through a smoke-filled kitchen, but the troupe's manager fled with the company purse and left the performers to face the angry innkeeper. Gülara returned to Sedge Bend, rebuilt the theater's act, and learned that charm can bring people together but cannot make them trustworthy. Now they perform at night and quietly gather evidence against the manager, who has resurfaced as a respectable patron. Their former stage partner Tegan wants Gülara to stop risking the theater for revenge, while Seliya fears the theater will be seized over overdue rent.

Role in the story

A vivid local performer who can become an ally, information broker, or witness to a financial and personal betrayal. Their search for justice can draw the party into the theater's troubles and force a choice between exposing the truth and protecting someone they love.

“Gülara returned to Sedge Bend, rebuilt the theater's act, and learned that charm can bring people together but cannot make them trustworthy.”
