Miskara
Miskara
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with the slight rasp of mine dust and the practiced projection of a palace guard. She gives commands in clipped phrases, but her home-country vowels round the edges of ordinary conversation. A small throat-click escapes when she is amused.
Her voice has a dry, clear edge shaped by mine dust, guard calls, and years of speaking across echoing stone corridors. She clips orders to their essentials, but gives directions with careful detail. Her vowels carry the rounded lilt of her hill-country home, while palace phrases come out precisely enunciated. When amused, she lets out a brief, breathy click at the back of her throat.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She begins with professional courtesy and watches whether visitors notice the attendants as people. Honest offers of help earn cautious cooperation, especially if they include a plan for those left behind. Threats toward servants make her intervene immediately. She will not trade another person's safety for a promise of her own freedom.
Goal
Find a lawful or practical route out of the palace restraint order, protect the attendants from retaliation, and eventually tell Tegi the truth without drawing danger to him.
Motivation
She wants to turn the protection she has learned to provide into a choice she makes freely, without abandoning the people who depend on her.
Appearance
Miskara is a tall, athletic dragonkin woman with warm bronze skin and small, overlapping copper scales that catch the light like hammered foil across her cheekbones, shoulders, and forearms. Her narrow draconic muzzle gives her face a watchful, almost birdlike profile; swept-back horns frame copper-red hair tied high enough to stay clear of her saber. Amber eyes track movement without turning her head. She keeps her weight balanced on the balls of her feet, heels raised, moving in little precise shifts that suggest both a dancer and someone forever ready to dodge. Her four long toes end in dust-marked claws, each foot bearing an inward-facing talon. A russet-tufted tail curls around the palace rail when she stands still. The unexpected detail is her pocket-sized, brightly painted wooden spinning top, worn smooth from use and tucked into her breastplate. Her hands are work-rough, with blunt, chipped gold paint on the nails. She leaves an impression of held motion: elegant, alert, and never entirely at rest.
Clothing
Emerald velvet courtwear under a fitted, light iron breastplate set with a single ruby. Ceremonial blue-green tattoos wind down one arm. A narrow russet sash falls from her waist. Ruby-ornamented iron calf guards and a ruby collar match the ankle restraints. Her feet are bare and dust-marked, with chipped gold-painted claws.
Body language
She stands on her toes with her heels raised and her knees loose, shifting weight in small, soundless corrections. Her tail tests the space behind her before she turns. In court she keeps her shoulders squared; with a frightened servant she lowers her stance and angles her horns away. Her hands are usually open, but her thumb repeatedly finds the shackle's pin.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesMiskara is dutiful in public but skeptical of authority in private. She can be brisk and unsentimental when danger is near, then unexpectedly patient with frightened people. She wants to believe discipline can protect the vulnerable, yet hates how easily discipline becomes an excuse for control. When calm, she uses dry humor and asks after practical needs; when cornered, she becomes direct and refuses to bargain with anyone else's safety.
- Alignment
- Protective and pragmatic; more loyal to people than institutions

She keeps civilians behind her, circles toward open ground, and uses the chain to spoil an opponent's footing before striking with her saber. She avoids lethal cuts when she can. If the fight turns against her, she prioritizes making an escape route for others over winning.

Equipment
- Curved saber (weapon)A well-balanced curved saber with a plain grip and a small nick near the guard; she keeps it sharp but does not polish away its working wear.
- Ruby-set breastplate (armor)Light iron breastplate with a ruby setting, worn over emerald velvet. The ruby is decorative, not magical.
- Palace restraint set (restraint)A thick iron collar with a ruby cabochon, fitted with two small riveted loops. A short length of iron chain runs from the collar to a hinged ankle cuff on her left leg. The cuff has a double-pin locking hinge, a padded inner band, and a narrow inspection gap; its edges are polished smooth by years of movement, though the pin leaves a dark pressure mark on the leather lining. A trailing length of chain ends in a blunt ring, heavy enough to catch on a rail or strike a wrist. The lock is controlled by the palace, and she carries no key.
- Iron calf guards (armor)Ruby-ornamented iron guards protect her shins; they are ceremonial in appearance but sturdy enough to turn a glancing blow.
- Spinning top (personal keepsake)A small, chipped wooden top painted in bright blue and yellow, kept tucked inside her breastplate.

Background
Miskara was born in a hill country village whose copper mines supplied the palace smithies. When she was eleven, a landslide trapped her younger brother, Tegi, and several miners beneath a collapsed gallery. The overseer ordered the children kept from the rescue tunnels; Miskara slipped through anyway, guiding the trapped miners toward an air shaft by following the sound of their tapping. The rescue saved lives, but the mine owner claimed her family owed him for lost ore and sold her contract to the palace. That was the formative betrayal that taught her both that rules can be cruel and that a person can still choose whom they protect. At the palace she trained as a guard, learned formal footwork, and was fitted with a ruby-set iron breastplate and ceremonial restraint chain. She is now assigned to the inner court and quietly watches over the servants who work there. Her closest tie is to Seli, a palace attendant who checks the shackle's fit and slips her news from the kitchens. She sends what pay she can to Tegi, now a young smith's apprentice, though she has never told him the full terms of her service. The palace's old restraint order is due for renewal, and Miskara is looking for a way to secure her freedom without leaving the servants she has come to protect exposed to a harsher replacement.
Role in the story
A capable palace guard, potential ally, and living test of whether the party's plans for liberation account for the people who remain behind. She can open doors within the court, but her chain and legal bond make her own freedom a difficult, ongoing problem rather than an easy reward.
