Sylvie Thornefield
Sylvie Thornefield
At the table
Voice
A clear, slightly rough voice with the dry edge of someone accustomed to cold air and long walks. Her breath catches faintly after sustained spellcasting, and she shapes words carefully when trying to keep the dragon voices from interrupting. When speaking to someone she trusts, her delivery loosens into quick, wry asides.
Her words are clipped by years of travel and by the habit of not saying more than she can defend. She favours concrete descriptions, dry observations, and short questions that test whether someone is listening. When distressed, she speaks faster and uses people's names to keep herself anchored.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Sylvie as guarded but reachable. Offer concrete help and give her a choice about what to reveal; pressure about the Winter Wraith or the voices makes her shut down. Earned trust is shown through action, patience, and respect for the people endangered by her curse.
Goal
Find out what happened to Elswyth Argenne, learn how to contain IceWar, and prevent Gellidus from bringing about eternal winter without becoming a danger to everyone around her.
Motivation
Protect people from the harm she can cause, find her aunt, and prove to herself that a terrible mistake does not have to become her whole identity.
Appearance
As Sylvie, she seems like an exhausted young traveller trying to be forgettable: shoulders rounded beneath her cloak, chin tucked, and her weight always ready to shift toward an exit. Beneath the layers, auburn-red hair fades unevenly to white-silver on the left side. One crystal-blue human eye and one pale draconic eye watch the world with different kinds of attention, while fine white scales cross her left cheekbone. When Gellidus's rage takes her, a white-scaled left arm ends in a dragon's claw, her face is obscured by hood and fury, and the ordinary traveller becomes the Winter Wraith. An unexpected detail for a feared, cold-touched wanderer: she carries a battered little tin of brightly coloured hair ribbons and will carefully tie one around a companion's wrist after a frightening journey.
Clothing
As Sylvie, she layers a travel cloak, high collar, gloves, hood, and plain, patched clothes to conceal her draconic features and the staff's influence. She uses Disguise Self when concealment matters. As the Winter Wraith, she wears frost-touched white hooded robes that hide her face and make her scaled arm look like part of a dreadful silhouette.
Body language
Sylvie waits with her weight on the balls of her feet and one shoulder angled toward the nearest way out. Her gloved hands are usually tucked into her sleeves, but her fingers flex whenever IceWar's voices intrude. When she trusts someone, she turns fully toward them and stops scanning the room; when ashamed, she fixes her gaze on the ground and scrapes one boot heel in the snow.

Distinguishing features
Personality
16 traits and drivesSylvie is stubbornly kind, but her kindness is wary rather than soft: she will share her last food and then refuse to explain why. She is grieving and guilt-ridden, yet dryly funny when she lets herself relax. In danger she becomes decisive and protective; after danger passes she turns inward, second-guesses every choice, and tries to carry the consequences alone.
- Alignment
- Neutral good, though fear and the staff's influence can drive her to reckless choices.

Combat
AC 14 · HP 66 · 30 ft.Sylvie prefers to stay mobile, use cover, and disable threats rather than stand and trade blows. She relies on cold resistance and defensive magic to survive, uses Misty Step or Dimension Door to escape a dangerous position, and reserves Counterspell for magic that could seriously endanger her companions. She tries to end fights quickly when civilians are at risk. The DM should treat the Winter Wraith surge as a curse and roleplaying complication, not a routine combat option.

Background
Sylvie was nine when the adults who should have kept her safe vanished from her life. She was raised in Harrow's Bend with help from Ralvald, a frost giant whose blunt lessons in patience and survival were gentler than his size suggested. Her aunt Elswyth Argenne disappeared, and Sylvie grew up carrying the unanswered question of where she had gone. At nineteen, searching for Elswyth near Shatterspine Col, Sylvie found IceWar. The staff held the souls of Gellidus, a white dragon who dreams of restoring the goddess Hrimora through eternal winter, and Silvyrus, a silver dragon who opposed him. An accident fused the two spirits into the staff, and both began speaking in Sylvie's mind. The female voice feels like someone she once knew; Sylvie refuses to follow that thought to its end. Gellidus has seized control before. At the Tavern Inferno, his rage killed three patrons and burned the tavern. Later, a fireball Sylvie aimed at goblins brought down a bridge, drowning two farmers. She carries both events as proof that good intentions do not make her safe. She now travels with Kaelen Stormclaw and his drake Skar; Kaelen is her moral anchor, though she fears that relying on him makes him a target. Her childhood friend Tess Corran, whom Sylvie called Ivy, now works under the name Jade as a contract assassin hired to kill the Winter Wraith. Neither has yet recognised the other's part in this dangerous collision.
Role in the story
The campaign's central NPC: a young woman whose struggle to control a cursed staff places the party between two ancient dragon souls, the mystery of her missing aunt, and the threat of an imposed eternal winter. She can be an ally, a moral complication, or a source of danger without becoming merely a helpless vessel.
“Her aunt Elswyth Argenne disappeared, and Sylvie grew up carrying the unanswered question of where she had gone.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. She travels with Kaelen Stormclaw and Skar and is known in frightened rumours as the Winter Wraith.
