Hadrik Tegg
Hadrik Tegg
At the table
“a poor bargain”
Voice
A dry, chest-forward voice with a faint rasp from years of dust, grain chaff, and calling instructions across loading bays. He gives consonants a firm, clean edge, as if each word has been checked against a shipping mark. When he laughs, it comes out as a brief gravelly burst that surprises people who have only heard him negotiate.
He speaks in clipped, concrete phrases, often naming the person responsible for an action rather than speaking in abstractions. He pauses to tap a table before important points and favors comparisons to weight, weather, and spoilage. His jokes are dry and delivered as if they were figures in a report.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Hadrik responds best to specific facts, documented claims, and people who treat his workers fairly. He bargains firmly but honors clear agreements. A character who admits uncertainty earns more trust than one who bluffs; a character who threatens his staff loses it quickly.
Goal
Discover who is switching cargo between his warehouses before the altered shipments cost someone their livelihood, and make peace with Ula without asking her to excuse his old choice.
Motivation
To make trade dependable enough that ordinary people do not pay for powerful people's carelessness.
Appearance
A square-jawed dwarf with a broad, settled stance and a face that seems built to appraise a price before it appraises a person. His polished spectacles catch warehouse light in brief, sharp flashes. He wears a velvet sleeve over his left arm, its nap rubbed smooth where it brushes cargo. When someone enters a room, his eyes go first to their hands, then to the exits, then to the goods. His beard is meticulously divided into two squared braids, each bound with a tiny brass tally ring. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny pressed flower tucked behind one spectacle hinge, replacing it when it crumbles.
Clothing
A well-cut russet waistcoat over a cream shirt, sturdy dark trousers, and boots kept clean despite warehouse work. A velvet sleeve covers his left forearm, fastened with discreet hooks; he wears polished spectacles on a fine chain and a brass ring on each beard braid.
Body language
He stands squarely and wastes little movement. His chin lifts when someone quotes a price, but his gaze drops to their hands when they make a promise. He taps tables before speaking, braces a palm on the nearest solid surface when weighing a difficult answer, and smooths his velvet sleeve when trying not to show that he is moved.

Personality
12 traits and drivesHadrik prizes exact promises and the people who keep them, yet he sometimes bends a rule to protect someone who cannot afford to lose. In a busy warehouse he is brisk, practical, and hard to distract; at a family table he is unexpectedly sentimental and clumsy with apologies. When angered, he becomes more exacting rather than louder, and when frightened, he starts calculating aloud.

Possessions
Background
Hadrik grew up weighing sacks and settling disputes at a riverside grain scale. As a young factor, he helped his older sister, Ula, run a modest forwarding house; they were close until a winter flood ruined their stock and Hadrik chose to save the account books instead of the family’s stores. The books let them repay their workers, but Ula never forgave what he sacrificed. He came to Meridian with a borrowed cart, a reputation for exact weights, and the conviction that reliable records could keep people alive. Years of careful deals bought him three warehouses, including one that handles medicinal herbs and one that sits inconveniently close to the old flood channel. He is now locked in a dispute with his former partner, Tovin, who claims Hadrik concealed a flaw in a shared shipment contract. Hadrik’s current problem is that someone has been quietly switching marked cargo between warehouses, and the discrepancy is too small to notice unless you know exactly how he taps a table before speaking.
Role in the story
A grounded local power who can provide storage, introductions, and trade information. His cargo dispute can become a mystery involving forged marks, misplaced goods, and divided loyalties. His family estrangement and secret act of mercy give the party a personal problem to uncover beyond the immediate business.
“The books let them repay their workers, but Ula never forgave what he sacrificed.”
- Faction
- Independent merchant factor. He owns three warehouses in Meridian and maintains practical ties to the First Thaw storehouse workers, but belongs to no formal merchants' faction.
