At the table
Voice
Ulla's voice is work-worn rather than husky: dry at the edges, projected from the chest to carry over ferries, and shaped by years of giving short directions in wind and noise. She speaks quickly when laying out a plan, but pauses to find exact words when discussing family or blame.
Her voice has a dry, sandpapery edge from river wind and years of calling directions over dock noise. She clips the ends of practical instructions, but lets stories unspool in winding detail when she feels safe. Anger makes her more direct and more physical with her words: she names the action she objects to, then asks what the speaker plans to do about it.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Ulla responds well to directness, useful work, and people who notice the needs of others without making a performance of it. She is wary of grand promises and dislikes being called a hero. Ask about the road or offer practical help to earn her trust. If pressed about leaving the caravan, she grows blunt and redirects the conversation toward current dangers.
Goal
Find a reliable replacement ferryman for her father and save enough money to keep the family boat in service.
Motivation
Ulla wants people to get home safely, but also wants to prove that protecting someone does not have to mean surrendering her own judgment or future.
Appearance
Ulla is caught in a constant half-turn, as if even standing still requires her to keep track of every exit. Her face is broad-cheeked and sun-browned, with a small notch in one eyebrow from an old, unremarkable training accident. Her dark hair is cut to jaw length and usually pinned back with a bent brass awl. She moves with the compact, spring-loaded balance of someone who has spent years walking crowded docks; her boots scarcely scuff the ground. When she pivots, a teal sash snaps around her like a brushstroke, followed by a scatter of dust. Unexpectedly, a tiny clay swallow hangs from her sword belt, its beak rubbed smooth from her thumb.
Clothing
A fitted leather jack worn beneath layered brown travel cloth, reinforced at the ribs and elbows. The jack is patched in three different shades of leather. Her left bracer is carefully polished, while the right is scratched from use. A long teal sash is tied twice around her waist, its frayed end knotted short so it cannot catch on a blade.
Body language
Her weight rests on the balls of her feet, and her shoulders angle toward the nearest person who might need help. She often turns her whole body toward a speaker rather than just her head. When embarrassed, she rubs the clay swallow's worn beak with her thumb; when deciding whether to trust someone, she watches how they treat a frightened animal or a tired worker.

Combat
AC 17 · HP 12 · 30 feetUlla fights defensively and watches for threats to allies before pursuing damage. She uses her shield and footwork to keep an enemy's attention away from vulnerable companions, then counters with quick cuts. She retreats rather than trading blows with a stronger opponent, and uses Second Wind when a fight threatens to overwhelm her. At level 1, she has no Action Surge or spellcasting.

Background
Ulla grew up carrying parcels between the fish piers and the hill markets of Bramble Quay, a riverside town built after its residents drained a stubborn marsh. Her mother, Sada, mended nets; her father, Farrokh, ferried passengers and taught Ulla to read currents by watching floating scraps. At seventeen, she joined a caravan guard crew for steady pay. During a night ambush on the flooded causeway, their sergeant ordered the guards to hold formation while a cart carrying trapped families tipped toward the water. Ulla broke ranks, turned aside a blade meant for a child, and helped pull six people free. The sergeant called it insubordination; the survivors called it the reason they lived. She left the crew soon afterward, carrying the cracked clay swallow one rescued child pressed into her hand. Now she works as a hired escort and occasional dockside mediator. She sends money home, but her father has begun losing his sight and refuses to leave the river. Her former sergeant, Drenek, still insists she owes him an apology, while one of the rescued children, now a young courier named Pacha, seeks her out whenever trouble finds the roads.
