Nikko
Nikko
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a slight rasp from juniper smoke and long hours speaking over hospice noise. His breath is normally even, and his words arrive with deliberate, practical precision. When frightened, his inhale catches high in his chest and his next sentence tends to acquire unnecessary dates, names, and qualifications.
He speaks in measured clauses, shaped by years of giving instructions over the noise of a busy hospice and by the care of a mortuary worker who does not want to startle mourners. His consonants are crisp, his breath usually steady, and his sentences tend to end with a practical question. When rattled, he takes a shallow breath that catches high in his chest and begins adding dates and explanations he does not need.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Nikko begins with courtesy and practical questions, offering help with the dead before discussing his own work. He is candid about the limits of his magic but guarded about the hospice siege. Show him respect for a deceased person's wishes and he becomes a dependable ally. Threaten to exploit a corpse or dismiss a spirit's agency and his composure hardens immediately.
Goal
End Jorven's corpse trade and recover the names and remains of those used in it, without allowing the magistrate to turn the dead into a permanent military resource.
Motivation
He wants the living to grieve without being deceived and the dead to be treated as persons, not fuel. Beneath that principle is the hope that careful work can somehow balance what he did to his mentor.
Appearance
Nikko's skin is the deep red-brown of fired clay, with fine, pale lines at his temples that resemble dried river deltas. Two swept-back horns, ridged like old wood, frame a narrow face and a mouth that seems on the verge of an apology. His gaze does not settle on faces; it travels to doorways, empty chairs, and the space just behind a speaker, as if checking who else has arrived. His black hair is cropped close at the sides and tied into a short, uneven tail. He moves with careful, economical steps, but his shadow sometimes appears to pause after he has stopped. Unexpectedly for a feared necromancer, he keeps a small folded paper menagerie in his coat and makes a new animal whenever he must wait.
Clothing
A high-collared charcoal coat lined with practical pockets, a dark red waistcoat, fingerless gloves, and a scarf wrapped twice around his throat. The coat carries the faint smell of wax, rain-soaked wool, and juniper smoke.
Body language
He keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest exit and his hands visible, palms turned slightly upward. When unsettled, his breathing catches at the top of each inhale and his eyes move to the empty space beside the person speaking. He becomes physically still when angry, but his fingers keep counting silently against his thumb.

AC 15 · HP 105 · 30 ft.Nikko avoids trading blows. He opens with control magic such as slow or wall of stone, then uses blight or Grave Lance against isolated threats. He uses dimension door to escape a flank or reach endangered allies, and counterspell to disrupt enemy spellcasters. He will not raise fallen allies as servants without their prior consent. If reduced below half his hit points, he prioritizes retreat and protecting bystanders over winning.

Background
Nikko grew up in the river town of Tervala, where his mother, a midwife, taught him that a body was not a verdict on the person who had lived in it. His sorcery first surfaced during a winter fever: he heard the dead speaking through the walls of the hospice and, in panic, stopped his younger sister's heart along with the fever that threatened her. She survived only because their mother knew how to restart it. The event made him fear his own power, then made him study it obsessively. Years later, during the siege of a border hospice, Nikko raised the fallen defenders to hold a gate long enough for patients to escape. The dead obeyed, but one of them, his old mentor, had never agreed to fight again. Nikko has carried that violation ever since. Now he works from a shuttered mortuary beside the old towpath, helping families identify the dead and negotiating with restless spirits rather than simply binding them. His sister, Tavia, is alive and runs a ferry crossing, but refuses to let him near her children. A former student, Jorven, has begun selling corpse-servants to the local magistrate. Nikko is trying to stop him without exposing how much of his own research made the trade possible.
