At the table

Voice

Her voice has a dry, precise edge, shaped by years of speaking over clattering dishes, carriage wheels, and crowded public rooms. The consonants land cleanly, while a warm, rough little rasp appears after long days of negotiation. Her laugh is sudden and open, showing her even teeth, and often surprises people who expect a more decorous sound.

Cevra speaks with the clipped clarity of someone who has spent years negotiating over noise in busy rooms. Her vowels are carefully shaped, but market phrases and shipping terms slip into her speech when she is tired. She rarely raises her voice; when angry, she speaks faster and uses exact figures, turning each point into something no one can politely ignore.

Speech patterns

Uses people's names early, as though establishing a personal connection is a kind of promise.
Turns a vague request into a concrete question: who needs what, by when, and who is responsible?
When she is amused, her jokes are dry and delivered as if they were clauses in a contract.
She avoids grand declarations and prefers to state the cost of inaction.

How to play them

Cevra begins by asking what the other person is trying to accomplish, then offers a specific form of help rather than a vague promise. She respects directness and remembers small acts of courage. Flattery makes her wary; honest criticism earns her attention if it comes with a useful alternative.

Goal

Keep the old warehouses in family hands long enough to convert them into affordable workshops and storage for the river ward.

Motivation

She wants to prove that inherited influence can be spent on people who will never return the favor.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Cevra looks as if she has stepped out of a portrait and then decided the portrait was badly composed. She moves with the economical precision of someone accustomed to crowded ballrooms and narrower escape routes, her skirts never catching on a chair and her gaze never lingering where it could be read. She has a broad, expressive jaw and unusually even, small teeth, which show in a startlingly frank grin when she laughs. Her hair is groomed into a glossy, architectural coil, pinned with a plain ivory comb that looks modest until one notices its fine workmanship. The unexpected detail: she carries a little tin of sugared fennel and offers it to nervous people with the brisk practicality of a field medic.

Clothing

Tailored plum riding coat over a cream waistcoat, dark split skirt, polished boots, and a narrow gold chain holding the seal of her house. Her clothes are expensive but repaired at the seams rather than replaced.

Body language

She stands with her shoulders open and chin level, as if making room for others to approach. When assessing a lie, she presses the tip of her tongue briefly against one canine. In anger, she does not retreat or soften; she squares her jaw and begins naming exact sums, dates, and obligations.

Distinguishing features

A strong, broad jaw and small, very even teeth that make her laugh look more candid than her public manner.
An immaculate, sculpted coil of dark hair held by a simple-looking ivory comb.
A tin of sugared fennel tucked into her sleeve, offered to guests who look close to panic.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Cevra is generous with time and stingy with promises. In public she is polished, patient, and difficult to embarrass; in private she is blunt enough to startle friends who expected another graceful evasion. She loves ceremony when it helps people feel included, but despises it when it hides a decision already made. When tired, her humor grows sharper and her appetite for compromise vanishes.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

She counts doorways when entering a building, then pretends she was admiring the architecture.
She offers sugared fennel to people who are nervous, angry, or simply waiting too long.
She flips a signet ring around her finger when considering a bargain, but never when signing one.
She remembers the names of household staff and occasionally forgets the titles of powerful guests on purpose.

Habits

At formal events she memorizes who arrived together, who avoids whom, and which staff members are being ignored.
When frightened, she becomes more decisive and starts assigning tasks as if the danger were a committee problem.
After a public argument, she sends a practical gift rather than an apology, then comes back to discuss the argument plainly.
She visits the river ward without an escort when she can manage it, but never lets her family learn the full extent of her donations.

Traits · 3

She gives people the courtesy of a clear answer, even when the answer is no.
She can make an anxious stranger feel welcome, then privately resent how much work that takes.
She enjoys fine food and handsome rooms, yet feels most useful in a draughty storeroom with a list of repairs.

Flaws · 3

She mistakes taking responsibility for having the right to decide.
She uses competence to avoid admitting when she is hurt or afraid.
She can be cutting toward people who treat compassion as a public performance.

Fears · 3

That the people she helps will discover she is using some of their gratitude to justify remaining a noble.
That her family's properties will be sold and the tenants displaced before she can secure a fair alternative.
That she will become so good at managing other people's lives that she stops listening to them.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants a fair chance to repair the warehouses before the family sells them.
Needs allies who will challenge her plans rather than merely admire her intentions.
Wants her mother to understand that protecting the family name sometimes means changing what the family does.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 38 · 30 ft.

Cevra avoids becoming the center of a fight. She uses cover, keeps an ally between herself and a dangerous opponent, and makes precise rapier attacks when an enemy is distracted. She retreats if the group loses its advantage, but will risk herself to get an injured ally out. Her listed statistics represent a level-5 custom noble combatant, not a standard monster or a player-character class progression.

Background

Cevra Tork grew up in a tall townhouse overlooking the old city market, the only child of a family whose fortune came from renting warehouses and whose reputation depended on pretending the money was older than it was. Her mother, Ilva, taught her contracts and the names of every servant; her father, Beren, taught her that a gracious smile could conceal a refusal. At seventeen, Cevra was sent to negotiate a winter food shipment with the river ward. A warehouse fire destroyed the stored grain while the city council argued over whose seal authorized the rescue. Cevra broke protocol, opened her family's private stores, and personally organized the deliveries. The food reached the ward, but the family lost its council seat and gained a stubborn public obligation. The experience changed her: she stopped treating influence as a prize and began treating it as a tool that must be used before the moment passes. Now she manages the family properties, quietly funds repairs to the riverside district, and clashes with her cousin Dac, who wants to sell the failing warehouses to a developer. Her mother thinks Cevra is endangering the family name; Cevra thinks the name is already endangered by what the family refuses to do.

Role in the story

A well-connected ally who can open doors in the city's upper circles while drawing the party into a dispute over tenants, inherited wealth, and a threatened neighborhood.
