Thibbledorf Pwent
Thibbledorf Pwent
At the table
Voice
Thibbledorf's voice has a rough, breath-driven rasp from years of shouting through helmets and stone tunnels. He speaks with the clipped rhythm of someone used to being heard over hammers and cave-ins. Gutbuster's voice is a separate, booming metallic bellow, full of rude invention; it shouts insults at enemies loudly enough to rattle loose dust.
He uses compact, practical sentences, often borrowing phrases from mining and wrestling. He enjoys a well-timed joke but wastes few words when someone is in danger. In combat, Gutbuster bellows insults at the top of its voice; Thibbledorf sometimes argues back mid-fight, as if heckling were a shared tactical plan.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He respects directness and demonstrated courage more than rank or grand promises. He is warm toward people who protect the vulnerable, but tests boastful newcomers with questions about what they did when someone weaker was in danger. If the party offers credible evidence about the tunnel collapses, he becomes a determined ally. Gutbuster may interrupt negotiations with insults, but can be reasoned with if its concern for Thibbledorf's safety is acknowledged.
Goal
Find the tunnel-wreckers, stop them from causing another collapse, and discover whether the old disaster was sabotage.
Motivation
Protect people who cannot protect themselves, and make sure nobody else dies because a powerful person decided a risk was acceptable.
Appearance
A broad, barrel-chested dwarf in dark iron armor crowded with hooked spikes, saw-edged ridges, and blade-like plates. In battle the metal shifts with a grinding snap, its points swelling until he resembles a charging heap of knives. His beard is divided into thick, meticulously waxed braids, each bound with a tiny brass ring; the rest of his grooming is equally exact, an unexpected touch of vanity for a fighter who delights in smashing through a melee. He moves in short, spring-loaded bursts, heels barely settling before he lunges. In a room, his eyes do not seek faces first: they track exits, high ledges, and the largest person present. People remember the scrape of his armor and the unnerving sense that it is watching them too.
Clothing
Gutbuster is his armor and his only weapon: a close-fitting, rune-seamed suit of living black iron with a crowned helmet spike, spiked gauntlets, and overlapping plates edged like blades. Out of combat its points retract to blunt ridges. He wears a plain wool sash over its waist and keeps his beard braids clean and neatly ringed.
Body language
He plants his boots wide when listening and rocks subtly from heel to toe when impatient. Before a fight, he rolls his shoulders until Gutbuster's plates clack into place. When someone mentions the lost miners, his hands stop moving and his gaze fixes on the nearest doorway.

He craves the rough joy of a close fight yet is unusually attentive to bystanders and the frightened. Around friends he is affectionate through teasing and practical favors; around authority he is suspicious, especially when orders put others at risk. He is proud of his strength, though more ashamed than he admits of the miners he could not save.

AC 22 · HP 300 · 30 ft.He closes distance immediately, using speed and leaps to get inside an enemy's reach. He targets dangerous spellcasters and commanders, pins them against walls or the ground, and uses Action Surge when a foe must be stopped before it can hurt someone else. He fights with Gutbuster alone and does not carry a shield or conventional weapon. He will break off to protect a threatened ally, even if that means leaving an enemy standing.

Background
Thibbledorf was born among the stonecutters of a dwarven hold, where he learned to judge a tunnel by its echoes and a person by where they stood when danger arrived. He first fought as a shield-bearer in the hold's gate company. During the collapse of a lower passage, he heard trapped miners tapping from behind a buckled iron door. His captain ordered him to hold the outer breach instead. Thibbledorf obeyed, and the miners died before rescuers could reach them. That failure changed his idea of courage: he would never again let a command, formation, or fear of looking foolish keep him from reaching someone in danger. Years later, he found Gutbuster in a sealed forge vault. The armor had been made as a guardian and had a voice before it had a wearer. It chose Thibbledorf after he spent a night arguing with it rather than trying to force it open. They have fought together ever since, though neither will admit which of them is the more reckless. Thibbledorf's sister, Dagna, now commands the gate company he left. She still sends him reports about threats to the hold, but their letters end in arguments about whether his methods help or endanger their people. He is currently hunting a band of tunnel-wreckers who have been collapsing old routes, including the passage where the miners died. He wants to save the living, but he also hopes to find proof that the collapse was sabotage, not a mistake he could have prevented.
