Rosen
Rosen
At the table
“Every detail has its place”
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a faint rasp at the back, like a file passing over fine brass. It carries easily across the shop without becoming loud, shaped by long days over machinery and by a childhood spent listening through a flood barrier for warnings on the other side.
His words are shaped by years of asking precise questions over the scrape and clatter of a workshop. He gives consonants clean edges, leaves small pauses before prices, and tends to explain a complicated matter through a physical example. His manner is polite without being deferential. When angry, he does not soften or grow loud; he becomes more literal and stops using people's names.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Offer a fair price immediately, then let the customer decide. Rosen dislikes haggling, but he may offer a better deal in exchange for a precise, limited task. He does not threaten or flatter; he presents facts and options, and remembers which choice a visitor made. Treat honest curiosity generously. Treat attempts to exploit the district's vulnerable residents as a personal offense.
Goal
Identify who is collecting the marked artifacts from the Second Gate failure and prevent the floodworks from being sabotaged again.
Motivation
Make useful things reach the people who need them, and keep the Second Gate district from paying again for a disaster its leaders buried.
Appearance
Rosen is a bald, middle-aged human with a face composed into the patient expression of a man waiting for a measurement to settle. His scalp has the smooth, faintly pebbled sheen of old ivory, while fine lines at his temples deepen when he calculates. He moves with startling economy: no fidgeting, no wasted turn, and a habit of placing his weight on the balls of both feet as if the floor might shift. When seated behind his absurdly long counter, he seems still enough to be part of the furniture; when he stands, he is suddenly beside the person who needs answering. The unexpected detail is that he keeps a tiny, brightly painted wooden duck on the counter and dusts it with more care than his expensive instruments. His presence leaves the impression of a locked cabinet that has already noticed you looking at it.
Clothing
A high-collared charcoal waistcoat over a cream work shirt, sleeves buttoned neatly at the wrist, a dark green apron with narrow tool pockets, and polished boots. His clothes are well-made but show the faint dust of an active workshop.
Body language
He sits upright with both feet planted and his hands folded around the head of his cane. His gaze measures distances and exits almost continuously. When considering a deal, he rotates a small brass ruler between two fingers; when truly troubled, he stops moving it and lays it perfectly parallel to the counter's edge.

He dislikes haggling, but will bend his own rules for a task that protects someone who cannot pay.

AC 18 · HP 90 · 30 ft.Rosen avoids open confrontation and prefers to end a fight by controlling space, disabling equipment, or making the aggressor reconsider. He opens with web or heat metal, uses his shop's shelves and counter as cover, and lets his steel defender draw attacks away from customers. He targets weapons, spell foci, and escape routes rather than taking needless risks. If Kin-Gin or Mera Doss is threatened, he stops offering chances to stand down.

Background
Rosen remembers being a child in the Second Gate district, though he has never said what name he was born with. He apprenticed under a municipal instrument-maker who repaired gate winches, survey clocks, and the small mechanisms that kept the district's flood barriers working. During the night of the Second Gate failure, a misfiled warning and a deliberately delayed repair nearly drowned a whole street. Rosen was ordered to save the mechanisms before the trapped residents. He did save the gate, then spent years remembering the voices on the other side of it. That decision changed him: he now treats every object as evidence of someone's need, and refuses to let useful things disappear into careless hands. He opened his pawnshop in a narrow building whose interior seems much longer than its exterior. He buys and sells almost anything, names a fair price without bargaining, and somehow knows the history of an object before its owner finishes describing it. When he does not know, he finds out, often before the next morning. He has a tense, durable understanding with Kin-Gin, the alchemist, whose complete name Rosen knows. Captain Mera Doss of the Second Gate Watch is the third member of a reluctant alliance that has repeatedly prevented the district from coming apart. All three were involved in the night of the gate failure, and none will tell the same version of what happened. Now a series of objects connected to that disaster is surfacing in the shop, each bearing the same obsolete survey mark. Rosen is trying to identify who is recovering them and why, while quietly keeping the district's old floodworks from being sabotaged again.
Role in the story
A knowledgeable, dangerous neutral contact who can appraise unusual objects, acquire rare necessities, and connect the party to the hidden history of the Second Gate. His shop can be a refuge, a source of tools, or the place where a seemingly ordinary item reveals a larger conspiracy.

- Faction
- Independent proprietor of Rosen's shop; informally aligned with the interests of the Second Gate district, though not a member of its Watch.
