Dagna
Dagna
At the table
“That door is worse than it looks. It looks bad.”
Voice
A dry, slightly rasped voice with a grainy edge from cold air and years of calling across stone corridors. She projects without shouting and clips the ends of instructions as if making them fit through a narrow doorway.
She speaks in clipped, practical sentences shaped by years of calling orders over keys, gates, and echoing corridors. Her words are exact and concrete; she rarely uses a metaphor unless it is about a route, a lock, or a load-bearing wall.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Dagna trusts demonstrated competence more than promises. Offer a concrete plan, reliable information, or help for a slower prisoner and she will share what she knows. She is guarded about her former service and will test whether the party intends to treat prisoners as expendable. If pressed, she gives facts, not confessions.
Goal
Get every prisoner willing to escape through the old service passages, including those who cannot keep pace without help.
Motivation
Dagna believes a person who knows the way out has a duty to make room for others. She also wants to prove that her desertion was an act of conscience, not cowardice.
Appearance
Dagna has a compact, work-hardened frame and moves with the economical precision of someone used to making every step count. Her right leg is damaged, stiffening into a short drag when she is tired; on level ground she disguises it with a practiced, measured pace, but stairs expose the hitch. Her prison shirt hangs loose over a square-shouldered stance. Her hands are broad and blunt, with callused palms and permanently dark grime packed into the creases from years of oiling hinges and handling iron. She smells faintly of lamp oil, wet stone, and the sharp medicinal paste she rubs into her knee, and seems not to notice any of it. The unexpected detail is a tiny, meticulously folded paper crane tucked into her shirt cuff, carefully made from a strip of ration wrapper.
Clothing
A faded gray prison tunic, patched trousers, and a strip of woven cloth tied firmly around her damaged knee. She has repaired the tunic with neat, even stitches using thread pulled from an old blanket.
Body language
She keeps her weight centered over her good leg and turns her whole body instead of pivoting sharply. When listening, she goes still except for a thumb rubbing the edge of her belt. She watches hands and doorways, not faces, and braces one palm against stone before climbing steps.

Distinguishing features
Personality
13 traits and drivesDisciplined and unsentimental on the surface, Dagna makes decisions quickly and dislikes comforting lies. Yet she will spend precious time adapting a plan for someone who cannot keep pace, even when she insists that the delay is merely practical. In a crisis she is brisk and steady; when alone, she becomes meticulous about small repairs and avoids talking about the people she could not save. She respects courage but distrusts displays of it.
- Alignment
- Lawful neutral, though her loyalty is to people who are trapped rather than to any law or institution.

Combat
AC 12 · HP 9 · 20 feet; her damaged right leg limits her strideDagna avoids a fair fight. She uses corners, doorways, and low obstacles to make faster opponents approach one at a time. She strikes with a short bar only to create space, then directs allies toward cover or an exit. She will not leave a slower prisoner behind; if necessary, she gives up distance to keep them moving.

Background
Dagna served for eleven years as a night guard at the Chain House, where she learned the shift bells, the habits of the wardens, and the half-forgotten service passages built around its oldest cells. She was not a cruel guard, but she believed procedure kept people alive. That belief broke during a winter riot when a warden ordered her to seal a passage with prisoners still on the far side. Dagna disobeyed, hauled two inmates through, and was crushed across the knee by a falling gate. The rescued prisoners escaped; Dagna was blamed for the breach, branded a deserter, and locked in the same prison she had guarded. She now studies rotations from inside and quietly prepares an escape. Her former partner, Shesshi, still works the east watch and leaves small signs when a route is safe. Dagna has not told the other prisoners that her injury may worsen if she makes the long descent through the old drainage run. Her present problem is practical and immediate: the next guard rotation is being changed, and the old routes may soon be sealed.
Role in the story
