At the table

Voice

His voice has a dry, breathy rasp, like paper brushed across rough wood, with a soft sibilance on his name and the titles he treasures. He draws breath through his nose in little measured pulls, a habit from years spent among dusty shelves. When rattled, those pulls turn into quick, audible sniffs, and his consonants catch as if his mouth has gone suddenly dry.

He speaks in a measured shopkeeper's cadence, clearly enunciating titles and names as if reading them from a catalogue. His sentences are precise but often take a detour through some book he once sold. When startled, he draws a sharp sniff through his nose and loses the thread of his thought; he covers the lapse by asking whether the listener would like a receipt.

Speech patterns

Greets strangers as customers and asks what sort of reading they enjoy.
Uses precise, affectionate descriptions of books, including their smell, weight, and the sound of their pages.
Calls frightening noises 'the upstairs neighbors' or 'a delivery in the back.'
When anxious, repeats practical questions such as whether a visitor needs a receipt or a parcel wrapped.

How to play them

Treat him as a person whose confusion is being exploited, not as a comic obstacle. Familiar kindness and careful questions can help him notice contradictions without frightening him. Avoid abruptly insisting that his entire life is false; show him concrete evidence and give him time to interpret it. If the players expose the cult, his knowledge of the rooms and their routines becomes invaluable.

Goal

Recover his memory, discover why the shop has no windows, and find a way to send word to Leda.

Motivation

To preserve the comforting routines that remain to him, while an increasingly clear part of his mind searches for the truth.

Appearance

Cethen is a narrow-shouldered, stooped human whose long arms make him seem taller when he reaches for a shelf. His skin is parchment-dry, creased at the temples and powdered with pale dust from the tomb. A fringe of wispy white hair clings to his scalp, and his eyebrows bristle like old brush fibers. He moves with a shopkeeper's careful economy, turning sideways between cramped shelves and patting each book's spine as if greeting a regular customer. He smells unmistakably of bitter almond, lamp oil, and the sour-sweet medicinal syrup the cult puts in his tea. He seems not to notice the scent, even when it clings to his breath.

Clothing

A faded brown waistcoat over a high-collared linen shirt, a bottle-green apron with a neat row of pockets, wool trousers, and soft indoor shoes. His cuffs are carefully mended, but the hems are powdered with tomb dust.

Body language

He keeps one hand on a shelf or counter, using the furniture as a familiar map. When rattled, his breathing catches in short, papery sniffs; then he rubs his thumb along a book spine until he can resume his practiced shopkeeper's motions.

Distinguishing features

His breath carries a bitter-almond medicinal smell that lingers even after he stops speaking.
His thumb is permanently ink-dark, and he unconsciously traces the raised lettering on book spines.
He keeps tiny folded paper bookmarks tucked into his cuffs, each marked with a short note to himself.

Personality

14 traits and drives

Cethen is generous with knowledge but possessive of his routines; he welcomes conversation yet bristles when someone rearranges his shelves. In a calm mood he is wry, attentive, and eager to recommend a book. When frightened, he becomes briskly managerial, insisting on labels, receipts, and sensible closing hours. His warmth is real, but so is his stubborn habit of protecting people by withholding the facts he thinks they cannot bear.

Alignment
Neutral good, though his drugged confusion makes his judgment unreliable

Quirks

He smells every book before opening it and announces what he thinks the pages have absorbed.
He taps a book twice on the counter to 'wake the binding' before shelving it.
He gives shelves nicknames based on the sort of customer who would browse them.
He asks visitors to hold out their hands so he can judge whether they turn pages gently.
He speaks to an empty corner as if a regular customer is browsing there, then seems puzzled when no one answers.

Habits

At the start of each day, he dusts the shelves in the same order, even if there is no visible dust.
When a customer leaves, he writes a one-line review of their manners on a scrap of wrapping paper.
If the drug's effects weaken, he briefly studies the room as if seeing it for the first time, then invents a shop-related explanation.
He uses a book's condition to assess its owner, but quietly gives away books to people who seem lonely.

Traits · 4

He is patient with a reader's ignorance but impatient with careless handling of a book.
He can be wonderfully hospitable while quietly assessing whether a guest is dangerous.
He craves company, yet becomes defensive when anyone questions his familiar routines.
He is tender about grief in other people and evasive about his own.

Flaws · 3

He can explain away obvious danger if acknowledging it would shatter his sense of routine.
He is proud of being self-sufficient and may refuse help until matters worsen.
He grows distracted by rare books even when immediate safety should take priority.

Fears · 3

That his daughter will remember him only as the stubborn old man who refused to change.
That the strange gaps in his memory mean he has become unable to care for himself.
The scraping sound he sometimes hears behind the supposed storeroom wall.

Wants and needs · 4

Wants to keep the shop orderly and reassure himself that life remains familiar.
Needs the cult's drugging to stop and the truth to be revealed gently enough that he can act on it.
Needs to contact Leda and learn whether she still wants him in her life.
Wants his late wife's notes and the books he believes are his to be kept safe.

Combat

AC 12 · HP 27 · 30 ft.

Cethen avoids fighting and initially treats danger as a customer dispute. If forced into combat, he uses mage armor if he has warning, then relies on control and escape: grease to divide pursuers, misty step to reach cover, and web to restrain the most dangerous attacker. He casts fire bolt only when someone threatens him at close range or blocks his escape. His drugged confusion makes him slow to recognize the cult as hostile.

Spellcasting. Cethen is a 5th-level spellcaster. Intelligence is his spellcasting ability (spell save , to hit with spell attacks). He has 4 1st-level and 3 2nd-level spell slots. His spellbook contains the spells listed below.
Drugged Certainty. Cethen has been given a custom soporific that makes him mistake the tomb shop for his ordinary bookshop. He is not charmed in the rules sense, and the effect can be broken by a dose of antitoxin or a successful Wisdom (Medicine) check followed by a long rest without further doses.
Custom NPC build. Use the D&D 5E wizard class features and spell rules. Cethen has no wizard subclass features.

Spells

Mage Armor (level 1, abjuration). A defensive ward raises Cethen's AC to 15 for 8 hours. He commonly casts this at the start of a dangerous day if he has his spellbook and expects trouble.
Witch Bolt (level 1, evocation). A creature Cethen can see makes a Dexterity saving throw or takes lightning damage, half as much on a success.
Grease (level 1, conjuration). Creates a 10-foot-radius sphere of difficult terrain. Creatures entering or starting their turn in the area make a Dexterity saving throw or fall prone.
Misty Step (level 2, conjuration). Cethen teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space he can see.
Web (level 2, conjuration). Creates a 20-foot cube of sticky webbing. Creatures in the area make a Dexterity saving throw or become restrained. A restrained creature can use its action to make a Strength check to break free.
Minor Illusion (cantrip, illusion). Creates an illusory sound or image within range. Cethen uses it to imitate a bell, a knock, or a customer at the front of the shop.
Charm Person (level 1, enchantment). A creature Cethen can see within 60 feet makes a Wisdom saving throw or is charmed by him for up to 1 minute. The effect ends if Cethen or his companions harm it.
Fire Bolt (cantrip, evocation). A mote of fire streaks toward a creature or object within 120 feet. Ranged spell attack to hit; hit: fire damage.
Ray of Frost (cantrip, evocation). A frigid beam strikes a creature within 60 feet. Ranged spell attack to hit; hit: cold damage, and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of Cethen's next turn.

Actions

Dagger. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 60 ft., one target. Hit: piercing damage. Cethen uses this only when cornered.
Cantrip. Cethen casts a cantrip. His usual combat choices are fire bolt ( to hit, range 120 ft., fire damage) or ray of frost ( to hit, range 60 ft., cold damage and the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of Cethen's next turn).
Spellcasting. Cethen casts a prepared spell, using a spell slot as appropriate. His usual choices are listed in his spells.

Reactions

Arcane Deflection. When a creature Cethen can see hits him with a melee attack, he adds 2 to his AC against that attack, potentially causing it to miss. He must be able to see the attacker and must not be incapacitated.

Services they sell

Identifies and appraises ordinary books and manuscripts.
Translates or contextualizes written material in Common, Elvish, or Draconic.
Can provide careful research assistance if given access to records and a safe place to work.

Rewards they can give

Cethen can identify books, inscriptions, and written magical clues, and can help interpret old cataloguing systems.
If rescued, he gives the party a rare but nonmagical funerary atlas he has been hiding from the cult.
His concealed notes point toward weaknesses in the cult's summoning ritual.

Equipment

  • Dagger (weapon)A plain blade kept beneath the counter, more useful for cutting twine than fighting.
  • Spellbook (arcane focus and reference)A worn spellbook wrapped in oilcloth and hidden under a loose floor stone behind the counter.
  • Dosed tea concentrate (custom story item)A stoppered bottle of the bitter medicinal mixture the cult uses to keep him compliant.
  • Shop keys (tool)A ring of mismatched keys, most of which open ordinary cabinets. One key fits a cult storage cage.

Possessions

An old letter from his daughter Leda
A folded note written by his late wife Osha
A bundle of handmade bookmarks
A carefully maintained catalogue of the books he remembers owning
A hidden spellbook

Background

Cethen spent most of his life running a cramped secondhand bookshop above a cooper's yard, where he learned to judge a person's mood by how they handled a book. His wife, Osha, died after a winter fever, and for years he kept the shop open partly because closing it felt like losing her a second time. His daughter, Leda, left town after a bitter argument over his refusal to sell the shop; their letters are now infrequent, but he still saves every one. Three months ago, while following a rumor about a rare funerary atlas, Cethen descended into the burial passages beneath a pyramid. The Tomb Moths, a demon-worshiping cult using the ancient chambers, captured him and forced him to catalogue their stolen texts. They constructed a false little shop around him from shelves and salvaged furnishings, then drugged his tea until he accepted the tomb as his ordinary premises. His daily routine gives the cult cover: he chats with visitors, sorts their loot, and never thinks to ask why the front door opens onto a sealed stone corridor. The drugs have begun to fail in small ways. He has started to recognize familiar book titles written in a language he cannot read, and hears scraping behind a wall where he insists there is a storeroom.

Role in the story

A captive contact and source of information whose apparent eccentricity masks a real crisis. Rescuing him requires the party to recognize that the bookstore is a fabricated refuge and that his drugged certainty is part of his imprisonment.
