Werek
Werek
At the table
Voice
Werek's voice is clear but slightly roughened at the edges, shaped by years of shouting directions across water and breathing damp air. A faint wet click sometimes catches between words when she is nervous. She does not lower her voice when angry; she gets faster, sharper, and more exact, as if trying to outrun interruption.
Her words have the clipped efficiency of someone used to calling over rushing water. She favors concrete verbs and short instructions, then circles back to explain what she meant if she notices confusion. Her vowels lengthen when she is tired, as though her sentences are being pulled downstream.
Speech patterns
How to play them
She responds best to direct questions and useful honesty. Treat her as capable rather than fragile, and she will offer practical assistance. If confronted with her role in the flood, she initially deflects; a calm acknowledgment of the harm done gives her room to speak plainly. Evidence of the river diversion earns her trust faster than grand promises.
Goal
Find the drowned shrine beneath the old river bend, learn to control her inherited magic, and expose the diversion that is putting downstream families at risk.
Motivation
She wants to make her magic answer to choice rather than panic, and to repair the damage her first great surge caused without pretending it never happened.
Appearance
Werek looks like a young, thin human woman at first glance, until light catches the fine, glistening sheen across her pale blue skin, as if she has just stepped out of rain. Tiny beads of moisture gather along her temples and collarbones, then vanish when she is anxious. Her short, dark hair clings in damp, uneven curls around her jaw. Aquatic green eyes hold a steady, tide-pool brightness. She wears long, loose garments that stream behind her when she turns, leaving her arms bare. The hems are repeatedly mended with mismatched thread, while one sleeve is painstakingly folded and refolded into a precise narrow pleat. She waits with her weight on the balls of her feet, as if feeling for a current beneath the floor, and moves in sudden, gliding shifts rather than ordinary steps. Her unexpected habit of carefully pleating one sleeve gives her an oddly fussy air beneath all that river-wildness.
Clothing
Flowing, sleeveless garments in dull river-green and grey-blue, layered for movement rather than warmth. The fabric hangs in damp-looking folds and is repaired with conspicuously different scraps. One sleeve-like shoulder drape is kept in an unusually exact pleat, her small private ritual of order.
Body language
She stands lightly, knees loose, and keeps a little more space between herself and dry fire than most people do. Her gaze tracks movement at the edges of a room, especially dripping water. When she is trying to be reassuring, she plants both feet and holds still; when she feels cornered, her shoulders turn sideways and her fingers begin tracing small, restless currents in the air.

Background
Werek grew up in a floodplain hamlet where her mother, Tünde, repaired nets and her father, Doru, ferried people across the river. As a child she learned to read the water by its smell and the way reeds leaned. At fourteen, a sudden night flood broke the village's old sluice. Werek heard voices trapped below the mill and, terrified, released a surge of magic that tore open a channel through the mill wall. The channel saved three people, including her younger cousin, but swept away the home of the ferryman Szel and left him with a ruined boat. Werek's magic has been growing ever since, answering fear more quickly than intention. She left home to find the drowned shrine said to lie beneath the river's oldest bend, hoping to learn why it answers her. She sends what little money she can to her parents, avoids Szel's letters, and is quietly gathering evidence that a local landholder has been diverting the river to protect his fields.
Role in the story
A fragile-looking but stubborn guide whose uncontrolled magic is entangled with a real local injustice. She can become an ally, a witness, or the person whose need for help forces the party to choose between a quick victory and repairing lasting harm.
“As a child she learned to read the water by its smell and the way reeds leaned.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. She sometimes carries messages for families along the floodplain and is investigating the landholder's diversion of the river.
