Hekumi
Hekumi
At the table
Voice
A soft rasp and audible nose-breath give her voice the quality of air moving through a narrow pipe. Years of shouting over surf have made her consonants crisp and her phrasing economical. Her laugh is a sudden nasal snort, startlingly ordinary against her otherwise watery presence.
Her words have a damp, breathy edge, shaped by years of calling across wind and surf. She often begins after a brief nasal intake, then speaks in short clauses with the practical rhythm of someone giving directions during bad weather. She does not raise her pitch to sound urgent; instead, she becomes faster and more specific.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a useful observation or offer of help. She responds best to clear questions and people who take practical precautions. If challenged, she becomes precise rather than hostile; if someone dismisses a real hazard, she will demonstrate what she knows, even at personal risk.
Goal
Map the failing storm drains beneath Silt Quay and persuade the district to prepare before the next spring surge.
Motivation
To turn her dangerous intuition into dependable, shared knowledge before another flood forces her to choose who gets saved.
Appearance
At first glance Hekumi looks like a young, thin human woman dressed for a warm shore, but her skin has a distinct blue cast and a slick, rain-on-stone sheen. Tiny droplets gather at her temples and along her collarbones even in dry rooms, catching lamplight like glass grit. Her short dark hair clings in separate wet-looking curls around her ears, though it never drips. Her bright blue-green eyes hold steady on whoever is speaking, then flick to the nearest open water. She moves with a measured, gliding gait, as if testing the floor for a current. The unexpected detail: when she laughs, she snorts sharply through her nose, an ungraceful sound that startles people expecting a mysterious water spirit.
Clothing
Flowing, sleeveless garments in faded river-blue and pale gray, wrapped and tied simply for ease of movement. Her arms are bare. She carries no visible equipment, tools, or weapons.
Body language
She holds her shoulders loose and her arms away from her sides, as if making room for unseen currents. Her gaze keeps returning to water, and before difficult answers she takes a short, audible intake through her nose. When embarrassed, she wipes a droplet from her wrist and studies it on her fingertip.

11 traits and drivesHekumi is eager to help but wary of being relied on; she can be blunt about danger yet strangely evasive about her own part in it. Background
Hekumi grew up in the tideward district of Silt Quay, where her mother Salla repaired nets and her father vanished during a spring flood. As a child, Hekumi learned to read the harbor by the tug of water around pilings. Her magic first erupted when a mooring line snapped and dragged her younger cousin Oru under; a burst of freezing water pinned the boat long enough for him to surface. She became the neighborhood's unofficial flood-watcher, then left after a surge destroyed three homes she had insisted were safe. Now she sleeps in a loft above a bathhouse, sends part of her earnings to Salla, and studies the old storm drains with Kett, a blunt municipal surveyor who believes the next flood will be worse. Hekumi wants to warn the district without admitting how uncertain she is. She is still learning that a warning can be useful even when it cannot be a promise.
Role in the story
A local guide and uneasy source of danger warnings whose knowledge can help the party navigate a flood crisis. Her history also makes her a compelling witness when the cause of a past disaster is investigated.
