Voice

Nima's voice has a dry, clear edge, like a match struck in a damp room. The breath support she built calling directions through floodwater gives it a carrying quality without requiring her to shout. When tired, her consonants grow clipped; when amused, a quick rasp catches in her laugh.

She speaks in clear, economical phrases shaped by years of making herself understood over bathhouse noise, rain, and crowded rooms. Her words have the practical rhythm of someone accustomed to giving directions quickly. She favors direct questions and uses humor to test whether a person can take a boundary seriously.

Speech patterns

Asks what a person needs before asking what they can pay.
Uses a customer's own phrasing back to them when testing whether they mean what they say.
Calls a bluff with a practical question, such as, "And who saw you do that?"
Uses plain, warm jokes to puncture a threat without escalating it.

How to play them

Treat Nima as a professional with boundaries, not as a prize or a source of automatic favors. She is open to practical offers, honest conversation, and help for the quarter. She becomes wary when someone treats her work as proof that she has no standards or agency. Give her a reason to trust before asking her to risk herself.

Goal

Find out what happened to the floodgate compensation records and make sure the families who were cheated receive something real, even if the answer implicates someone she knows.

Motivation

Nima wants security that does not depend on being useful to powerful people. She also wants the floodgate families to be seen as owed a debt, not pitied as victims.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Nima has warm, clay-red skin with a fine dry sheen at the temples and pale, weathered patches across her shoulders from years working beneath awnings that never quite keep out the rain. Her horns sweep back close to her skull, ridged like old river stone, and her long tail curls around a chair leg when she waits. She stands with her weight on the balls of her feet, always angled toward the nearest exit, yet moves through a crowded room with a slow, assured glide that makes people step aside before noticing they have done it. The unexpected detail is a tiny brass bell tied to one horn with blue thread; she says it is there to remind her that silence is not always safety.

Clothing

A fitted plum-red bodice with a plunging neckline, slit overskirt, and sheer teal scarf worn provocatively but arranged for easy movement. Brass rings fasten the fabric at her hips; a hidden inner pocket holds her earnings and a small knife. Her boots are sturdy, polished, and scuffed at the toes.

Body language

She keeps her hips turned toward an exit and rests one hand on a chair back as if the furniture were a reliable ally. Her tail gives away impatience before her face does. With someone frightened, she lowers herself to their eye level; with someone trying to dominate a room, she becomes perfectly still.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Nima is warmly attentive but never entirely off duty. She can be playful and candid with someone who respects her boundaries, yet turns brisk and procedural when a room feels unsafe. She wants to believe people can change, but keeps track of what they do rather than what they promise. With friends she is generous to the point of foolishness; when cornered, she becomes blunt enough to surprise those who mistook her charm for submission.

When a client becomes threatening, she stops smiling and addresses the nearest witness by name.
If someone is grieving, she offers food before asking questions.
When she is genuinely amused, she taps her bell twice with one claw.

Combat

AC 11 · HP 13 · 30 ft.

Nima avoids a fair fight. She uses furniture, doorways, and witnesses to make an aggressor hesitate, then aims to escape or get help rather than win by force. If cornered, she uses Room-Clearing Rebuke to create an opening and targets a weapon hand with her knife. She does not pursue fleeing opponents.

Once used, this action cannot be used again until Nima finishes a Long Rest. Custom feature.

Background

Nima grew up above a bathhouse in the flood-prone quarter of Veyra, where her mother kept rooms and her aunt repaired nets. At sixteen, during the Night of the Stuck Gates, a floodgate jammed and the district filled waist-deep with black water. Nima spent the night leading children and elders along the rooftops, calling directions through the storm until her voice gave out. The city paid the gatekeepers, not the families who lost their homes, and that taught her that kindness without leverage rarely changes anything. Now she works by choice as a companion and hostess at the House Built Over the Old Kiln, where she sets her own hours, keeps a sharp eye on the door, and quietly helps people who need a place to hide or a message carried. She sends money to her younger cousin Tekk, who is apprenticed to a locksmith, and is in a tense, affectionate relationship with the bathhouse keeper, Jori, who wants her to leave the quarter for safer work. Her current problem is that a council clerk has begun asking about the floodgate families and the missing compensation records.

Role in the story

A capable local contact who can offer shelter, rumors, and a human perspective on the city's floodgate scandal. She may become an ally in exposing corruption, but her own relationships and safety complicate any easy investigation.
