Shesh
Shesh
At the table
Voice
A dry, lightly rasped voice with a small intake of breath before names, as if she is turning a mental page. Years of reading in drafty rooms have left a faint grain in her throat. She projects cleanly across a busy chamber without shouting, and her sentences land with the clipped finality of a stamped form.
Her speech is compact and well-ordered, built from years of reading clauses aloud and stopping people from talking over one another. She favors exact dates and concrete nouns, and her dry jokes arrive as if they were footnotes. When she is anxious, she clears her throat once before speaking, then becomes more precise rather than more hesitant.

How to play them
Shesh is helpful to anyone who brings a clear question, a date, or a properly submitted petition. She is wary of people who demand shortcuts, but responds well to patience and specific details. If she believes someone is trying to suppress a claim, she quietly helps them find the relevant procedure and warns them about the risks rather than promising an outcome.
Goal
Identify who is manipulating the Hall's petitions and preserve enough evidence to reopen the tenant families' spring claim without exposing the vulnerable people who supplied the records.
Motivation
To make sure that the people least able to demand attention are not erased from the official account of their own lives.
Appearance
Shesh has the compressed, alert look of someone who has spent decades reading by lamplight and listening for lies across crowded rooms. Fine creases gather at the corners of her eyes, which move from face to face with quick, inventory-taking precision. Her cheeks and knuckles are dry and lightly roughened by paper dust, winter drafts, and years of washing ink from her hands. She walks with short, efficient steps and pivots sharply, as if every interruption has been entered in a schedule. The unexpected detail: she keeps a tiny, carefully folded paper bird tucked behind one ear, replacing it whenever it gets crushed.
Clothing
A charcoal wool dress under a faded russet work apron, both patched neatly at the elbows. Her sleeves are tied back with narrow linen bands, and a small wooden ruler is tucked into one cuff. She wears practical ankle boots dusted pale from the Hall's stone stairs.
Body language
She angles her head toward whoever is speaking, then lets her gaze drop briefly to their hands, papers, or shoes before returning to their face. Her fingers tap a steady filing rhythm against the edge of her desk. When someone lies, she does not glare; she becomes very still and asks for the date again.

Personality
13 traits and drivesShesh is exacting but not cold: she will spend an hour locating a poor family's lost petition, then refuse a councilor's request to skip the queue. Her dry humor softens when she is teaching someone, but becomes a shield when she feels cornered. In a crisis she is brisk and decisive; in private, uncertainty can keep her awake as she rechecks a date she already knows by heart.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 4 · 30 ft.Shesh is a noncombatant with no formal training. She tries to put a desk, locked archive door, or crowd between herself and danger, calls for the Hall's watch, and uses Point of Order only to create a moment to escape. She will risk herself to keep fire or violence away from irreplaceable records, but not to win a fight.

Background
Shesh was born in Hill's Edge to a family that repaired roof tiles and kept no written accounts beyond chalk marks on a pantry beam. As a child, she began helping an elderly petition-reader sort scraps of testimony after a flood ruined part of the Council archive. The old reader taught her that a record was not the same thing as truth, but that losing a record could make truth impossible to prove. Shesh entered the Joined Ledger Hall as a junior copyist and became indispensable by remembering odd details others dismissed: a witness's phrase, a stain on a page, the order in which people had arrived. Years ago, during a bitter boundary dispute, Shesh discovered that a petition proving a hillside spring belonged to several tenant families had been deliberately misfiled. She found it in time to prevent an eviction, but the Council blamed her for the delay and the families' land claim remains unresolved. One of those tenants, her old friend Tella, still visits to ask whether the case has moved. Shesh tells her the truth, even when the truth is only that nothing has changed. Her current problem is a set of petitions bearing the same unexplained phrase in different hands. The oldest is filed under a word from which her own nickname may have descended. Shesh suspects someone is trying to erase a pattern from the Hall's records, and she has begun keeping a private index because she no longer trusts the official shelves.
Role in the story
A perceptive civic ally, source of procedural knowledge, and keeper of records that powerful people would prefer to stay buried. Shesh can direct the party toward old evidence, but her discoveries may expose her and the people whose claims she is trying to protect.
