Voice
A breathy rasp with a dry, airy edge, as though his throat has spent years swallowing marsh dust. He takes a small inward breath before place names and lets the consonants scrape lightly together. When angry, he speaks more quickly and precisely, as if issuing trail instructions in a storm.
He speaks in a lightly rasped, breathy voice, shaped by years of giving directions over wind and running water. His words arrive in measured bursts, with soft sibilants and a faint catch of breath before he names a dangerous place. Under stress, his sentences shorten and become practical rather than louder.

How to play them
Araafah is frank with people who show competence and patient with those who admit what they do not know. He offers help in practical units: a safe route, a meal, a warning, or an hour of watch. To earn his trust, explain what you stand to lose and show that you have considered the people affected by your plan.
Goal
Expose the canal survey's falsified flood records and keep the Silt Steps from being drained.
Motivation
He wants to prevent another preventable loss, but beneath that is a need to prove that the choice he made at seventeen was not the only thing that defines him.
Appearance
Araafah has warm umber skin with a fine, wind-dried texture and a narrow pale line of old ink beneath his left ear, left there by a childhood mapmaker's test. His black hair is clipped close at the temples and tied in a short, practical knot behind his head. He moves with a rolling, deliberate gait, placing each foot as if testing a riverbed for loose stones; when he stops, he becomes startlingly still. A small brass astrolabe dangles from his belt, though he is more comfortable reading the land than the stars. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny clay whistle tucked in his collar and plays it for stray dogs.
Clothing
A faded sand-colored shirt under a sleeveless, reed-green coat, both patched with neat cross-stitches. His trousers are wrapped at the calves against mud and insects. He wears a woven sash with several flat pockets and weather-softened leather boots.
Body language
His shoulders angle toward exits and routes even during a friendly conversation. He holds eye contact steadily, then glances down to check people's footing. When worried, he rubs the edge of his astrolabe with his thumb; when relieved, his posture loosens and his steps become almost jaunty.

Combat
AC 16 · HP 44 · 30 ft.Araafah opens with hunter's mark against the most dangerous visible foe, then uses his longbow and cover to make opponents cross exposed ground. If enemies crowd him, he switches to his longsword and uses terrain, difficult ground, and Reed-Slip to reposition. He casts spike growth to block a narrow approach, pass without trace to withdraw or set an ambush, and cure wounds only when an ally's survival depends on it. He prefers retreat and regrouping to fighting to the death.

Background
Araafah grew up among the reed-cutters of the Silt Steps, a riverside settlement named for the stairlike banks once used to haul bundles of reeds uphill. His mother, Tashira, made roof mats; his father, Yulbek, ferried people across the floodplain. At seventeen, Araafah guided a caravan through a drought-struck marsh. He chose a shorter route that looked safe from the bank, but shifting mud swallowed two wagons and killed his cousin, Sabu. The experience changed him: he stopped trusting a map that had not been tested underfoot, and began learning to read currents, animal tracks, and the small silences that precede danger. He later served as a pathfinder for the River Wardens, where he befriended their meticulous quartermaster, Oltan, and argued constantly with their captain, Shavira, over whether protecting a route meant protecting the people who lived beside it. He has since left the Wardens, but still sends part of his pay to his mother and quietly checks on Sabu's son, Ilyan. Now a new canal project threatens to drain the Silt Steps, and Araafah is gathering proof that its surveyors falsified the flood records.
