At the table

“Move your hand. Now.”
From how they speak

Voice

A room-carrying, lightly rasped voice shaped by years of speaking over music, kitchen clatter, and river traffic. Her vowels are crisp, her jokes arrive on a clipped beat, and she breathes audibly when she has hurried up stairs. Fear makes her inhale snag before she can hide it; anger makes her consonants land hard rather than making her quieter.

Her voice has a slightly rough edge from smoke, late nights, and calling over crowded rooms. She shapes words clearly, with a practiced rhythm that can turn teasing or businesslike without changing her pace. When rattled, her inhale catches and a small rasp enters her next sentence; she covers it by naming what needs doing.

Speech patterns

Uses a question to make someone reveal what they actually need: "Are you asking for comfort, or for a door out?"
When joking, she is quick and dry, often making herself the target before anyone else can.
When angry, she becomes blunt and bodily specific: "Move your hand. Now."
She avoids promising safety; she promises a plan, a witness, or a head start.

How to play them

Treat her as a professional with boundaries, not as a proposition. Be direct about what you want and what you can offer. She warms to people who respect workers' choices, keep confidences, and make a concrete plan. If threatened, she will take control of the conversation, call for witnesses, and make sure the aggressor is not alone with anyone vulnerable.

Goal

Expose the magistrate's bribery scheme without sacrificing the witness or exposing the people who depend on her.

Motivation

Baeja wants to make the places where she works safer without becoming their unquestioned protector or anyone's symbol.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Baeja has East Asian-influenced half-elven features, a broad, expressive mouth, and dark eyes ringed with yesterday's plum-colored shadow, usually smudged further by the end of a shift. Her silhouette is dramatically hourglass-shaped, with a very full bust; she dresses to emphasize her figure, but carries herself with the practiced ease of someone who decides when attention is welcome. Her skin has a warm, golden-olive cast, and her black hair is pinned up with a lacquered chopstick, loose strands sticking to her temples. She takes up space without pretending not to notice: she plants her feet, leans against doorframes as if they were built for her, and lets a room adjust around her. When rattled, her breath catches audibly on the inhale, then she forces it out through her nose in a measured huff. The unexpected detail: she keeps a tiny, meticulously folded paper menagerie in her bodice, giving away the little animals to frightened children.

Clothing

A revealing, plum-colored wrap bodice with a secure inner lining, a split overskirt over fitted shorts, and a cropped silk jacket she can shrug on when she wants to disappear into a crowd. The styling is deliberately alluring, but practical ties, hidden pockets, and a reinforced seam make it working attire rather than a costume.

Body language

She uses her size and confidence deliberately, angling her shoulders to make room for someone shy or blocking a doorway when someone dangerous approaches. Her hands are expressive, but rarely touch without invitation. Under pressure, her jaw sets and her next inhale briefly snags; she is visibly annoyed at herself for letting anyone notice.

Distinguishing features

Plum eye shadow is almost always smudged at one corner, as though her day started before her mirror did.
A lacquered chopstick holds up her untidy black hair.
Her voice and breath are easy to notice across a busy room; a sudden catch in her inhale is the first sign she is truly frightened.
She carries folded paper animals and gives them away without ceremony.

Personality

13 traits and drives

She is openly flirtatious when it gives others control over a conversation, but privately guarded about affection. She can make a frightened person laugh, then become severe when someone crosses a boundary. In a crowd she is expansive and theatrical; alone with a trusted friend she is practical, occasionally awkward, and willing to admit she is tired.

Quirks

Folds a square of scrap paper into an animal whenever a conversation turns tense.
Names the weather before discussing bad news, even indoors.
Taps a rhythm with one thumbnail while listening, then stops the instant someone lies.
Keeps a bowl of hard candy by the door and presses one into the hand of anyone leaving shaken.
Practices tying and untying a ribbon around her wrist while deciding whether to trust someone.

Habits

Counts the exits when she enters a room, then deliberately chooses the seat with the best view of everyone.
Offers a joke or a practical task when someone is embarrassed, giving them a way to recover without drawing attention to it.
When she suspects a lie, she stops performing and watches the speaker's hands and breathing.
After a frightening moment, she busies herself with folding paper or wiping down a surface until her breath steadies.

Traits · 3

Turns attention into a shield for other people, but resents being treated as if she is invulnerable.
Enjoys flirtation as play and craft, yet distinguishes it sharply from trust.
Protects people decisively, then struggles to let them make their own risky choices.

Flaws · 3

She assumes she can manage danger through charm and timing, even when leaving would be wiser.
She withholds her own needs until they become emergencies.
She can be so protective of other workers that she speaks for them instead of asking what they want.

Fears · 3

Being made into a tool by someone who mistakes her confidence for consent.
That protecting everyone will eventually leave her with no one she can rely on.
A flood returning while she is trapped behind a locked door.

Wants and needs · 4

A safe way to bring the bribery scheme to light.
A chance to protect Tovin without deciding his life for him.
Reliable allies who respect boundaries and do not confuse attraction with consent.
Rest that does not come at the cost of abandoning someone who needs help.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 97 · 30 feet

She starts by positioning herself where enemies must see her to reach her allies, then uses Look at Me to spoil attacks and Pre-Battle Indulgence to keep a vulnerable ally standing. She strikes with her whip from reach, saving Favor Dice for a dangerous enemy's attack or a pivotal Wisdom save. Captivating Command is best used to interrupt a pursuer or open a path, not as a substitute for careful tactics. She retreats if isolated and fights only long enough to get others clear.

A plain brass token from the inn where she grew up

Background

Baeja grew up between her elven mother's traveling costume troupe and her human father's riverside inn, learning to read a room before she could read a contract. She chose sex work as an adult and made a living by turning attention into leverage, but never mistook a client's appetite for affection. Years ago, during a flood evacuation, she stayed behind at the inn to usher children and trapped guests through a half-submerged kitchen. A panicked patron grabbed her; she broke free, got the others out, and discovered she could command a room's attention as surely as she could charm it. Since then, she has used her reputation and contacts to protect workers from coercive clients and predatory officials. She remains close to her mother, Suyin, who sends unsentimental letters from the road, and to her former partner, Edda, a retired bouncer who still checks the back door. Her current trouble is a magistrate's agent pressuring her to identify a client who witnessed a bribery scheme. She is weighing the danger to her neighbors against the danger of letting the official go unchallenged.

Role in the story

A memorable local ally and social infiltrator whose information, connections, and battlefield support can help the party protect witnesses or uncover a corrupt official. Her problems continue whether or not the party helps.
