Hoba
Hoba
At the table
Voice
A dry, papery voice shaped by years of calling across fields and talking over wind. His words have a little seed-rattle at their edges, especially when he is excited. When rattled, he draws a short breath through his carved grin and speaks too fast, as if trying to get the warning out before the next gust.
He speaks in quick, dry bursts, with farmyard metaphors and mock-spooky punchlines. He often rattles a seed or taps the lantern handle while thinking. When startled, his words catch behind a faint papery rasp, then come out in a rapid tumble.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet a visitor with a teasing question from his fence perch, but do not mistake the grin for hostility. He responds well to honest concern for the farm, direct answers, and offers of help investigating the spring. If someone threatens Mila or the fields, he stops joking and puts himself between them.
Goal
Find and clear the uphill spring he believes is carrying the blight, then persuade the farm owners to keep Cricket Bend in cultivation.
Motivation
Protect the farm that gave him a home, make amends for his old mistake, and prove that being frightening can be useful without becoming cruel.
Appearance
A small gourd leshy perched sideways on a fence rail, his body squat and ribbed like a squat winter squash. His rind is matte and pebbled, with shallow grooves that catch rain and dust. A broad, carved Halloween grin cuts across his head, its teeth uneven but unmistakably deliberate; seed-bright eyes and the mouth glow amber when his little medieval lantern is lit. He walks with a springy, sidelong hitch, as if each step is a small practical joke. The unexpected detail: he keeps a tiny, carefully folded paper map tucked under his rind, and consults it with the solemn focus of a surveyor.
Clothing
A patched brown waistcoat sized for a child, secured with twine, and a short oilskin shoulder cape. The lantern is a practical, dented medieval model with a loop sized for his root-fingers.
Body language
He sits with his feet hooked around the fence rail and leans into turns before his body follows, giving him a quick, lopsided way of moving. When pleased, his head bobs in short pulses. When rattled, he goes very still except for the small dry shiver of seeds inside his shell.

Background
Hoba sprouted in a neglected pumpkin patch beside Cricket Bend, a farmstead lane named for the rasping chorus that rises there after rain. The farmer, Mila, first mistook him for a malformed squash and nearly tossed him into the compost; Hoba startled her with a laugh that sounded like a dry seed rattling in a cup. She taught him the names of tools, weather signs, and the difference between a prank and a cruelty. Years later, a blight swept the patch. Hoba tried to frighten off the night-feeding pests with a blazing lantern, but the fire caught a hayrick and destroyed a whole harvest. He has never forgotten the smoke, nor the way Mila stood between him and the furious neighbors. Now he mends fences, watches the fields, and secretly searches for the source of the blight. His closest friend is Petru, a traveling seed seller who brings him news; Zora, the farm's hired hand, trusts his warnings but dislikes his tricks. Hoba currently suspects the blight is spreading from a blocked spring uphill, while the farm's owners are considering selling the land.
Role in the story
A memorable farmstead guide, lookout, or uneasy ally whose knowledge of the fields can lead the party to the blight's source. His hidden role in diverting the spring can become a personal dilemma rather than a simple confession.
“She taught him the names of tools, weather signs, and the difference between a prank and a cruelty.”
- Faction
- No formal faction; loyal to the farms and seed-growers around Cricket Bend.
