At the table

Voice

His voice sounds as though it has traveled through a smoke-filled hall: clear at a distance, dry-edged up close, and marked by a faint rasp from years of playing and speaking over crowds. He gives names, including his own, a deliberate, rounded cadence, but never sings them.

His words have the measured spacing of a practiced musician, with crisp consonants and a soft rasp at the end of each phrase. His voice carries easily across a hall without strain, shaped by years of playing over feasts and shouting crowds. When he laughs, it begins as a warm breath and ends in a dry click of the tongue.

Speech patterns

He speaks in short, carefully placed phrases, leaving a pause where another speaker might expect a conclusion.
He refers to performances as promises and to interruptions as insults.
When discussing Fionn, he never says 'killed'; he says 'ended the verse.'
He answers practical questions directly, then turns the answer into a challenge about what the listener would do with the truth.

How to play them

Aillen respects musicians who take risks and listens closely to original counter-melodies. Let the party learn that playing over him can protect allies; offer clues through Sesh's coded tune or the harp's changing rhythm. He can be bargained with if the characters acknowledge the harm he caused and propose a performance or ritual that gives the night a new ending. He does not accept empty flattery.

Goal

Make the great hall answer his song differently this Samhain, without having to admit that he wants to be remembered for more than its destruction.

Motivation

To turn an inherited cycle of performance and destruction into a choice he can make for himself, while preserving his pride and his place in the songs of Tara.

Appearance

Aillen looks like a court musician dressed for a feast that ended centuries ago. His narrow face is powdered with pale, silvery dust that catches in the creases beside his mouth, and his dark hair is combed into precise parallel ridges that never seem to shift, even in wind. His eyes are the deep brown of wet peat, with tiny sparks of orange appearing when he draws breath to kindle flame. He moves with a dancer's exact economy, placing each foot as if stepping between notes. The unexpected detail is his fastidious vanity: before every performance he checks the harp's polished back for fingerprints and rubs each one away with the hem of his sleeve.

Clothing

A smoke-dark wool tunic beneath a finely pleated, old-fashioned mantle fastened with a tarnished bronze pin. The mantle's hem is scorched, but the rest is brushed and mended with obsessive care.

Body language

He stands almost motionless while speaking, but his thumb keeps tracing the harp's carved edge. Before a dangerous note, he inhales through his nose and sets his shoulders as if bracing against a blow. When genuinely amused, he taps a rhythm against his own wrist.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Aillen is courteous about craft but ruthless about interruption. In a calm conversation, he asks careful questions and remembers every answer; under pressure, he becomes theatrical and treats each decision as a cue in a performance. He craves an audience yet distrusts admiration, and he can show genuine tenderness toward a musician only to punish that same person for refusing to play along.

Alignment
Chaotic neutral

Quirks

He checks the harp's polished back for fingerprints before every performance.
He counts doorways by tapping his thumb against his wrist, never aloud.
He turns cups so their handles face the nearest musician.
He pauses mid-sentence whenever someone hums a note he recognizes.
He collects broken harp strings and ties them into small, exact loops.

Habits

He begins with the lullaby, even when a negotiation seems promising; changing the order feels to him like admitting fear.
He studies performers' hands and breathing, then changes tempo to expose their habits.
If a counter-performance catches his attention, he circles the musician rather than attacking immediately.
He will not burn a sleeping child or a musician who has laid down their instrument.
After combat, he gathers fallen harp strings before checking his own wounds.

Traits · 4

He values a bold, imperfect performance more than flawless imitation.
He is vain about his appearance and harp, but indifferent to comfort or luxury.
He can be unexpectedly gentle with anyone who admits fear without disguising it.
He turns competitive when another musician takes the lead, even if that person is helping him.

Flaws · 3

Pride makes him treat a counter-performance as a challenge he must answer.
He is bound by habits from the old Samhain rite and struggles to imagine a different ending.
He underestimates people who do not perform for an audience.

Fears · 3

That his music has become only a weapon, with no beauty left in it.
That the hall will survive his song and leave him with no excuse to return.
That Sesh's warnings are not warnings at all, but a final farewell.

Wants and needs · 3

He wants someone to recognize the craft in his music without praising the destruction it has caused.
He needs to decide whether the old Samhain rite is a promise, a compulsion, or simply a habit he can break.
He wants to know whether Sesh still considers him a friend.

Combat

AC 16 · HP 150 · 30 ft.

Aillen opens with Samhain Lullaby to put the party to sleep, then follows with Mouth of the Mound against clustered sleepers. He targets anyone counter-performing with Discordant Cadence or a direct attack, but may pause if their music is unusually inventive. He uses the hall's pillars and rafters to break line of sight, saving his breath attack for groups. A bard can counter his music by using an action to make a DC 16 Charisma (Performance) check while playing or singing; on a success, the bard and chosen allies within 30 feet stay awake while the performance continues. Aillen is a boss designed for a party of bards, and the counter-performance is meant to reward teamwork rather than shut down his signature threat.

Otherworldly Nature (custom): Aillen does not need to eat, drink, or breathe, and he has advantage on saving throws against being charmed.
Samhain's Return (custom): Aillen can be permanently slain, but if defeated anywhere other than Tara's great hall on Samhain, he reforms in the Otherworld before the next Samhain.
Harp-Bound Lullaby (custom): Aillen's sleep music is magical, not a spell. A creature protected by a successful counter-performance is immune to it for 24 hours.

Spells

Spellcasting (cantrip, custom feature). Aillen's innate Otherworld magic. Charisma is his spellcasting ability (spell save , to hit). He can cast these spells without material components.
Cantrips (cantrip, various). At will: minor illusion, prestidigitation, vicious mockery.
Innate spells (level 1, enchantment, divination, illusion). 3/day each: charm person, detect magic, disguise self, silent image.
Innate spells (level 2, enchantment, evocation, illusion). 2/day each: suggestion, shatter, invisibility.
Innate spells (level 3, illusion, enchantment). 1/day each: hypnotic pattern, fear, major image.
Innate spell (level 4, conjuration). 1/day: dimension door.

Actions

Samhain Lullaby (Recharge 5–6). Aillen plays a measured phrase on his wooden harp. Each creature of his choice within 120 feet that can hear him must make a Wisdom saving throw. On a failure, it falls unconscious for 1 minute. The effect ends for a creature if it takes damage or another creature uses an action to shake it awake. A creature that succeeds is immune to this Lullaby for 24 hours. This is a custom magical effect, not the sleep spell. A creature can use its action to counter the music with a performance on an instrument or by singing; it makes a Charisma (Performance) check. On a success, it and allies of its choice within 30 feet who can hear it are immune to the Lullaby while the performance continues. If Aillen is damaged or his harp is silenced, the Lullaby ends.
Mouth of the Mound (Recharge 5–6). Aillen exhales supernatural fire in a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area makes a Dexterity saving throw, taking 45 () fire damage on a failure, or half as much on a success. An unconscious creature in the cone has disadvantage on this saving throw. The flames ignite unattended flammable objects.
Harp-Staff. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 () bludgeoning damage, plus 10 () fire damage. Aillen strikes with the reinforced neck of his harp, taking care not to break its strings.
Discordant Cadence. Aillen chooses one creature he can see within 60 feet. The target must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or take 18 () psychic damage and be unable to take reactions until the end of its next turn. A target concentrating on a performance has disadvantage on this save.

Reactions

Break the Measure. When a creature Aillen can see within 60 feet begins a musical performance or spell with an audible component, Aillen can impose a wavering overtone. The creature must succeed on a Charisma saving throw or have disadvantage on the next ability check made to sustain or counter that performance before the end of its next turn. This does not silence the creature or prevent a successful counter-performance.

Legendary Actions

Measure of Rest. Aillen moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Wooden Accent. Aillen makes one Harp-Staff attack.
Borrowed Silence (costs 2 actions). One creature Aillen can see within 60 feet must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or have disadvantage on its next attack roll or ability check before the end of its next turn.

Services they sell

Can teach a willing musician a fragment of an Otherworld melody, if the characters earn his trust.
Can identify ancient or fey musical enchantments.
Can negotiate a one-night truce with the Tuatha Dé Danann, though such a promise will carry obligations.

Rewards they can give

The Samhain Harp, if Aillen willingly gives it up or the characters recover it; its lullaby is potent but may draw Otherworldly attention.
A bargain with Sesh for an introduction to the Tuatha Dé Danann's court.
A boon from Tara's keeper: a safe hall, a place at the next feast, or access to old Fenian songs.

Equipment

  • Samhain Harp (instrument, custom magical focus)A small, dark wooden harp with a polished back, bronze tuning pegs, and strings that seem to quiver a moment before he touches them.
  • Old mantle pin (keepsake)A bronze fastening pin shaped like a three-pronged flame, worn smooth where his thumb rubs it.
  • Court mantle (clothing)A narrow, smoke-stained mantle carefully patched at the hem.

Possessions

A small wooden harp, old enough that its maker's name has worn away.
A patched court mantle and its bronze pin.
A packet of coded musical messages from Sesh.

Background

Aillen was born among the Tuatha Dé Danann, where music could be a gift, a weapon, or a binding promise. He learned to shape sleep from the pauses between notes and fire from the breath that followed a final chord. For twenty-three consecutive Samhain nights he came to Tara, played his small harp, lulled the hall into sleep, and burned it with flame from his mouth. The pattern ended when Fionn mac Cumhaill stayed awake by pressing a spear point to his own forehead and killed Aillen. That death was not an ending: Aillen returned to the Otherworld, carrying a new and unwelcome memory of pain. He now comes back to Tara because the old rite has become tangled with grief and pride. He tells himself each visit is a test of the hall's guards, but in truth he wants someone to meet his music without either surrendering or killing him. His former patron, a court musician named Sesh, still sends him warnings through coded melodies; Aillen ignores them, though he keeps every message. The current keeper of Tara's hall, Tadhg, has secretly asked the player characters to make the hall survive one more Samhain night. Every guard who stood watch last year was found asleep, unharmed but unable to remember the music.

Role in the story

A seasonal boss and possible tragic antagonist. The party must keep Tara's great hall and its people safe for one more Samhain night, confronting the fact that every guard who stood watch last year was found asleep. Aillen's music tests both their combat skills and their ability to protect one another through performance.
