Mavuno
Mavuno
At the table
Voice
His voice is a little rasped at the edges from projecting over market noise and breathing smoke from cheap stage lamps. He can make it ring like a town crier, then cut it down to a close, friendly murmur without sounding timid. When upset, he speaks faster and more plainly, as if the performance has been packed away.
He speaks with the practiced projection of a street performer, shaping consonants clearly enough to reach the back row. His voice has a dry, woody rasp from years of outdoor shows and cold nights in wagon tents. He uses quick asides and deliberately overexplains obvious things for comic effect, but his humor vanishes when danger becomes real.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He begins with a harmless bit of physical comedy and an easy question, then gauges whether the visitors respond to the performance or the person beneath it. If they show patience or kindness, he trades jokes for candid information. If they threaten his crew, the smile remains painted on, but his attention becomes precise and cold.
Goal
Expose Hask's coercion without endangering the performers who have been forced to help him, then find a safe route for the children in his care to rejoin the traveling troupe.
Motivation
To use humor as a means of protection rather than concealment, and to keep his makeshift family safe without deciding their lives for them.
Appearance
Mavuno looks like a street performance that has taken a wrong turn into a serious conversation. His painted smile is broad and buttery yellow, cracked at the corners where sweat has softened the greasepaint. His red curls spring from beneath a floppy cap like coiled ribbons. He stands with his weight pitched onto the balls of his feet, as if the ground might ask him to dance at any moment. In a crowd he takes up almost no room, slipping through gaps with practiced ease; when alone, he sprawls dramatically across benches and barrels. The unexpected detail is his immaculate, painstakingly mended patchwork coat: every repair is sewn in the shape of a tiny animal, and he can name the child who stitched each one.
Clothing
A patched motley coat in faded saffron, plum, and teal, with tiny animal-shaped repairs; striped stockings, soft-soled boots, a floppy cap, and a battered leather belt crowded with props. His paint is cheerful but never perfectly symmetrical.
Body language
He waits on the balls of his feet with one heel lifted, head cocked as if listening for a cue. Around strangers he folds inward and makes room; when protecting someone, he plants himself broadside between them and danger, arms flung wide as if beginning a dance.

Personality
12 traits and drivesMavuno is generous with laughter but suspicious of easy applause. In a crowd he is shamelessly theatrical, making himself the target of every joke; one-on-one he is attentive and surprisingly earnest. When ashamed, he gets louder and more ridiculous. When truly angry, he becomes brisk and practical rather than soothing, and the clowning stops entirely.

AC 14 · HP 38 · 30 ft.Mavuno avoids a fair fight. He uses Tasha's hideous laughter or dissonant whispers to disrupt the most dangerous foe, then moves through the confusion to get between enemies and vulnerable allies. He uses his staff to trip or drive attackers back, saving his reaction for an ally in immediate danger. If an enemy can be made to laugh, hesitate, or chase a harmless prop, he considers that a victory.

Background
Mavuno grew up in a family of traveling puppeteers, learning that a laugh could make strangers lower their guard and that a well-timed pause could make them listen. At nineteen, he performed for a garrison during a winter siege, turning ration complaints into a ridiculous pageant about a king who ate his own boots. The soldiers laughed, then shared their hidden food with the starving families outside the walls. The experience changed his idea of comedy: a joke could be a door, but it could also be a shield. Years later, he returned to the market town of Bent Ford after learning that the same garrison's former quartermaster, Hask, was quietly forcing local performers to spy on their audiences. Mavuno refused and lost his troupe's regular work. His sister Sefu still travels with the puppeteers and thinks he is being needlessly reckless. Meanwhile, he has taken responsibility for a small crew of orphaned stagehands who rely on his act for meals, shelter, and the occasional spectacularly bad juggling lesson.
Role in the story
A comic ally and information broker whose apparently frivolous act gives him access to kitchens, barracks, and public squares. His refusal to become Hask's informant can draw the party into protecting his crew and uncovering a coercion scheme.
“The soldiers laughed, then shared their hidden food with the starving families outside the walls.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. He performs with the Roadside Players and is watched warily by Hask's network of informants.
