Avelano
Avelano
At the table
Voice
A dry, clear voice with a faint rasp from years of calling across wet docks. His vowels are rounded and his delivery quick, but he puts deliberate weight on names and promises.
His words carry the clipped efficiency of a courier used to being heard over dock noise, softened by the patient precision of someone who has spent hours mending cloth. He favors concrete details and rarely raises his voice to command attention.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Start with a useful offer or a small joke, then ask what the other person is trying to protect. He responds well to directness and fair payment, and poorly to threats aimed at workers or family. If players show concern for ordinary people, he shares more of his history.
Goal
Expose the people who caused the warehouse fire and secure a safe, honest life for Olai without making her dependent on his protection.
Motivation
He wants justice, but his deeper need is to believe that helping someone does not automatically make them a liability he must manage.
Appearance
A fair-skinned man with a deliberately feminine style, Avelano is immediately recognizable by his long, pale ginger hair, faded almost to the color of dried apricots, and the stark white lock that falls beside his left cheek. His hair reaches the middle of his back, brushed smooth but never pinned in place; it swings like a bright curtain when he turns. Dark hazel eyes watch people with an amused, measuring focus. He walks with a rolling, slightly asymmetrical gait, as if always adjusting to the pitch of a ship's deck, and can become unnervingly still when listening. His appearance is striking without seeming polished: there is always a hint of dock dust on his boots and a tiny glint of gold at one ear.
Clothing
A fitted blue lace-trimmed sleeveless top, worn over a practical undershirt, and close-cut indigo trousers resembling sturdy denim. He wears soft-soled boots, a short weatherproof jacket for river work, and several small gold piercings scattered along each ear. The clothes are carefully mended, not expensive.
Body language
He leans slightly into turns, favors his left side when standing, and often shifts his weight as though feeling for the movement of a boat. When suspicious, his hands go completely still. When pleased, he touches one of the small gold piercings in his ear.

Background
Avelano grew up among the narrow wharves of a river port, the child of a rope-maker and a traveling costume mender. He learned to judge a stranger by their boots from his father and to repair a torn hem from his mother. At nineteen, he took work as a courier for the 4th Survey Steps, a riverfront district named for an old military map. During a night delivery, a warehouse fire trapped his younger sister, Olai, and several dockhands. Avelano had the key to a side gate but had been ordered to keep it shut until a smuggling shipment was moved. He opened it anyway. People escaped, but the shipment vanished and his employer blamed him for the loss. The choice cost him his place and made him wary of anyone who calls loyalty a simple thing. He now works as a discreet guide and finder, tracking down missing people and stolen goods while quietly sending money to Olai, who lives under an assumed name after witnessing the fire's true cause. His former employer, Daro, still wants the truth buried; Avelano has recently found evidence that the blaze was deliberately set to erase a record of illegal evictions.
Role in the story
A morally complicated local guide and potential ally who knows the riverfront's hidden routes. His search for proof can draw the party into a struggle over arson, displacement, and the people who profit from both.
