Hessa
Hessa
At the table
“the night the sky forgot its face.”
Voice
A dry, slightly rasping voice shaped by years of speaking over quarry noise and winter wind. Her breath catches faintly on words beginning with s, as if she is tasting dust. She articulates directions clearly, but lets emotional words trail off before they can become a confession.
She speaks in clipped, work-honed sentences, naming what she can observe before guessing at causes. Her vocabulary carries the habits of a stone surveyor: seams, load, pressure, settling. When speaking of Zherros, she sometimes slips into an old shared shorthand and catches herself mid-sentence.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Hessa responds to practical kindness and specific questions. She shares safe observations first, then tests whether a listener respects uncertainty. Mentioning Zherros makes her guard drop for a moment, followed by a quick retreat into caution. If convinced the party can protect others, she gives them a marked route to the old observatory.
Goal
Discover what happened in the sealed passage on the final night of the old moon, then return to Zherros without drawing the presence that displaced her after them.
Motivation
Hessa wants to understand the force that pulled her out of ordinary time, but her deepest motive is to spare Zherros the belief that finding her will fix everything.
Appearance
Hessa looks like someone who has spent years persuading stubborn objects to tell the truth. She stands with her weight on the balls of her feet, heels barely touching the ground, as if testing whether the floor might shift. Her hands are broad across the palm and permanently stippled with pale flecks of moonstone dust; she rubs her thumb along the side of her forefinger when listening. Her movements are abrupt but economical, with a habit of turning her whole body toward a sound rather than merely glancing. The unexpected detail is a tiny stitched pocket on the inside of her work coat, lovingly embroidered with a pattern of childish stars. It holds a dried sprig of mint, not a tool.
Clothing
A patched charcoal wool coat with a high collar, a faded ochre scarf, reinforced trousers, and soft-soled work boots. Chalk dust gathers in the seams. The coat's inside pocket is embroidered with tiny stars.
Body language
Hessa balances forward as though ready to cross a room at a moment's notice. While thinking, she presses her thumb into the chalky grooves on her fingertips. She turns toward voices with her shoulders first, and when frightened she becomes intensely still, listening for a sound no one else has noticed.

Combat
AC 10 · HP 5 · 30 ft.Hessa avoids a fair fight. She keeps near an exit, uses chalk or loose objects to interrupt pursuit, and tries to reach a place with familiar thresholds. If Zherros is threatened, she will risk herself to create an escape, but she does not fight to the death.

Background
Hessa was born in a riverside settlement built around a quarry cut into a chalk-white ridge. She learned to read stone seams from her mother, a mason, and became an assistant to the village's moonkeeper, recording the phases and unusual tides. Years ago, during the final night of the old moon, every instrument in the observatory stopped together. Hessa heard a second tide beneath the river and saw a dark crescent reflected in dry stone. She told only Zherros, her mortal partner and closest friend, who was then investigating an unexplained series of missing hours. They followed the evidence into a sealed drainage passage beneath the old observatory. Hessa vanished there before dawn; Zherros escaped with her notebook and has never stopped investigating that night. In truth, Hessa survived, displaced into brief intervals that recur around moonless nights. She has recently returned to the world for minutes at a time, leaving chalk marks and small practical warnings for Zherros, but is afraid that a full return will bring whatever took her back with her.
Role in the story
A missing person, fragile witness, and reluctant guide whose return complicates Zherros's investigation rather than resolving it.
