At the table

Voice

A dry, resonant voice shaped by years of dictating notes in echoing stone archives. Dust catches in its edges, and certain old words emerge with a clipped, archaic precision. His speech is neither hushed nor booming; it carries because he expects a room to be listening.

He speaks in carefully joined clauses, with dates and concrete observations in place of broad claims. He often pauses to choose the most accurate word, not to sound grand but to avoid saying more than he knows. When amused, his speech becomes quick and dry; when frightened, he starts naming facts aloud as if pinning them in place.

Speech patterns

Separates recollection from certainty: "I remember it plainly. That does not make it true."
Uses dates and seasonal markers instead of vague references to the past.
Answers personal questions with precise facts, then notices too late that he has avoided the actual question.
When amused, makes dry comparisons between a person's plans and a badly aligned calendar.

How to play them

He offers practical help before asking for trust, especially research, protection, or a carefully phrased answer. He is candid about what he knows and evasive about what he remembers from the night Hessa vanished. Respectful curiosity earns his cooperation; attempts to make him an oracle or living relic make him withdraw.

Goal

Identify the cause of the impossible eclipses and determine whether they are connected to the disappearance of the old gods and Hessa.

Motivation

To understand the new temporal disturbance without repeating the mistake that cost him Hessa, and to help people make informed choices rather than impose a repaired history on them.

Appearance

Zherros is a lean, long-limbed tiefling with reddish-orange skin like sun-warmed clay, weathered into fine dry creases around his mouth and knuckles by centuries of wind, dust, and spellwork. His black hair is drawn back into a heavy braid that reaches his waist, threaded with tiny brass rings that click softly when he turns. Golden eyes hold a thin, dark ring around each pupil, like an eclipse caught at its edge. His gazelle-like horns sweep back in long, tapered arcs over his shoulders; their ridged surfaces are polished where his cloak rubs against them. He occupies a room as if measuring every possible route through it, yet seems genuinely surprised when others step aside. The unexpected detail: he keeps a little clay pot of kitchen herbs at his belt and fusses over it with the solemn care of a gardener.

Clothing

A layered indigo travel coat with a high collar split to accommodate his horns, lined with faded star charts. Its cuffs are polished smooth from handling instruments, and the hem is patched with mismatched cloth from places that no longer exist. He wears a wide sash for scroll tubes and a weather-stained cloak.

Body language

He turns his whole frame toward whoever is speaking, horns and shoulders making the gesture feel like a formal summons. When thinking, he presses his thumb to the brass rings in his braid. His attention can make people feel scrutinized, though he often has to remind himself to leave them room to move.

Gazelle-like horns sweep backward over his shoulders, their ridges polished by the collar of his coat.

He keeps a clay pot of kitchen herbs in his belt pouch and checks its soil by touch.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Zherros is exacting about evidence but surprisingly patient with honest ignorance. In calm company he can be wry and generous, offering tea and practical advice; under pressure he becomes controlling, arranging people and events as if they were pieces on a diagram. He longs for companionship yet flinches from anyone who treats his memories as a substitute for their own.

Alignment
Neutral, with a strong preference for preserving choices over enforcing a single idea of what is right.

Quirks

Counts the beats between a question and an answer, then sometimes admits he was counting.
Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Names the herbs in his belt pot after the seasons, though he says the names are for convenience.
Leaves a small gap between two objects on a table and becomes uncomfortable if anyone closes it.
Records ordinary weather in his notes, especially rain, as proof that the present is real.

Habits

Arrives early, then waits in a place where he can see every entrance.
Checks the shadow of a nearby object when someone makes a promise.
When discussing the past, distinguishes what he remembers from what he can prove.
After using powerful magic, tends his herb pot as if reassuring himself that ordinary life still exists.

Traits · 3

He insists on distinguishing what he witnessed from what he inferred, even when the distinction frustrates a conversation.
He is protective of vulnerable people but dislikes being thanked as a savior.
He can be warmly funny about small inconveniences, then abruptly severe when someone proposes changing history casually.

Flaws · 3

Treats uncertainty as a problem to be solved, even when others need empathy more than answers.
Keeps dangerous discoveries to himself until he can verify them, sometimes denying allies the chance to prepare.
His long life has made him slow to recognize how urgent a mortal's deadline can feel.

Fears · 3

That Hessa's disappearance was caused by his attempt to alter the past.
That the eclipses signal another rupture between the present age and the world he remembers.
That people will treat his memories as scripture and surrender their own judgment to them.

Wants and needs · 4

Needs trustworthy evidence about the eclipses, not another legend presented as fact.
Wants to learn what happened to Hessa without endangering the people already caught in temporal fractures.
Needs allies who will challenge his conclusions rather than defer to his age.
Wants to preserve the herb cuttings and the small ordinary routines that keep him anchored to the present.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 122 · 30 ft.

Zherros opens with control and positioning rather than damage, using wall of force, slow, or temporal stasis to divide threats. He protects concentration with positioning and counterspell, reserving teleportation for escape or rescue. Against a single dangerous foe he uses disintegrate or forcecage; against a group he favors area control. He avoids lethal force when a foe might know something about the vanished gods or Hessa.

Chronal Shift. Twice per long rest, Zherros can use his reaction to force a creature he can see within 30 feet to reroll an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw. He chooses which result is used.
Temporal Awareness. Zherros adds his Intelligence modifier to initiative rolls.
Momentary Stasis. As an action, Zherros forces a creature he can see within 60 feet to make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, it is incapacitated and has a speed of 0 until the end of Zherros's next turn. He can use this feature a number of times equal to his Intelligence modifier per long rest.
Arcane Abeyance. Once per short rest, Zherros can condense a spell of 4th level or lower into a Tiny bead that lasts for 1 hour. A creature holding the bead can use an action to release the spell, using Zherros's spellcasting statistics.
Custom feature, Borrowed Second. Once per long rest, when reduced to 0 hit points, Zherros instead drops to 1 hit point and teleports to an unoccupied space he occupied at the start of his previous turn. This is a personal temporal anomaly, not a standard Chronurgy feature.

Spells

Eldritch blast (cantrip, evocation). Wizard cantrip: a ray of crackling energy deals force damage to a creature on a hit.
Minor illusion (cantrip, illusion). Wizard cantrip: creates a harmless sensory effect or small illusion.
Mage hand (cantrip, conjuration). Wizard cantrip: manipulates a small object or produces a minor magical effect.
Mage armor (level 1, abjuration). Creates a magical barrier that grants +3 AC to a willing creature for 8 hours.
Haste (level 2, transmutation). A creature gains +2 AC and advantage on Dexterity saving throws for up to 1 minute with concentration.
Slow (level 3, transmutation). Slows creatures in a 40-foot cube. Affected creatures make a Wisdom saving throw or suffer the spell's slowing effects for up to 1 minute with concentration.
Wall of force (level 5, evocation). Creates an invisible wall of force that can be shaped as a dome, sphere, or flat surface and lasts up to 10 minutes.
Forcecage (level 7, evocation). Creates an invisible cage that traps a creature or encloses an area for up to 1 hour.
Disintegrate (level 6, transmutation). A beam of green energy deals force damage to a creature on a failed Dexterity save; a creature reduced to 0 hit points is disintegrated.
Mirror image (level 2, illusion). Creates up to four illusory duplicates that impose uncertainty on attacks against Zherros.
Counterspell (level 3, abjuration). Attempts to interrupt a creature casting a spell, automatically countering spells of 3rd level or lower and requiring an ability check for higher-level spells.
Simulacrum (level 7, illusion). Creates a duplicate of Zherros that can act independently and cast spells through its space.
Demiplane (level 8, conjuration). Creates a demiplane with a door connecting it to the current location for up to 1 hour.
Prismatic wall (level 9, abjuration). Creates a 40-foot-radius sphere of shimmering force that prevents creatures from entering or leaving by nonmagical means.
Time stop (level 9, transmutation). Stops time for everyone but Zherros for turns, ending early if he affects another creature or an object worn or carried by one.

Actions

Spellcasting. Zherros casts a prepared spell of 1st through 9th level, using Intelligence as his spellcasting ability. His spell save DC is 21 and his spell attack bonus is +13.
Dagger. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 () piercing damage.

Reactions

Chronal Shift. When a creature Zherros can see within 30 feet makes an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, he forces it to reroll. The creature must use the new roll. Zherros can use this reaction twice per long rest.
Shield. When Zherros is hit by an attack he can see, he casts shield, gaining +5 AC until the start of his next turn, including against the triggering attack. This uses a spell slot as normal.
Counterspell. When Zherros sees a creature casting a spell, he attempts to interrupt it with counterspell, using a spell slot as normal.

Legendary Actions

Measured Step. Zherros moves up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Custom: Borrowed Beat (costs 2 actions). Zherros casts a cantrip or uses Chronal Shift, if available.
Custom: A Moment Set Aside (costs 3 actions). Zherros chooses a creature he can see within 60 feet. That creature must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw or be removed from the current turn order until the start of its next turn. It cannot take actions or reactions during that interval. This is a custom legendary action, not a standard Chronurgy feature.

Background

Zherros was born in an age when the old gods still answered prayers openly. He served as a keeper of calendars and omen records in a city whose name has been worn down into the word Serev, a place built around a now-dry canal. When the old pantheons disappeared, Zherros saw the city lose its sacred seasons: harvest rites failed, rulers fought over whose calendar remained true, and his partner, a mortal astronomer named Hessa, vanished during the final night of the old moon. Zherros tried to rewind that night. Instead, he froze a district for three days and returned to find the people inside alive but changed, each remembering a different version of events. The disaster taught him that time can be bent but not neatly mended. He has since studied the chronurgy that lets him contain fractures rather than erase consequences. He still seeks evidence of what happened to Hessa, while maintaining a quiet correspondence with Jori, a young archivist who has inherited fragments of the old records. His current problem is a series of impossible eclipses: they match a celestial pattern he remembers from before the gods vanished.

Role in the story

A powerful, wary ally and source of historical knowledge whose memories may illuminate the campaign's central mystery but cannot be trusted as a complete record. His personal search for Hessa can entangle the party in a temporal crisis.

“He served as a keeper of calendars and omen records in a city whose name has been worn down into the word Serev, a place built around a now-dry canal.”
From their background
Faction
Independent researcher; maintains an informal correspondence with the archivists of Serev but serves no temple or wizarding institution.

Known connections

Jori, an archivist in Serev, sends him copied fragments of pre-pantheon records and suspects Zherros knows more than he admits.
Hessa, his vanished mortal partner, is the reason he still investigates the final night of the old moon.
The inhabitants of the district he accidentally froze remember conflicting histories, and some regard him as their rescuer while others blame him for the years they lost.
