At the table

Voice

A dry, steady voice shaped by years of reading aloud over the clatter of presses and the hush of archives. His river-town consonants rasp slightly, and his breath catches after long explanations. He sounds practical rather than grand, as if every sentence should help someone find the right shelf.

He speaks in measured, plainly chosen sentences, with the clipped precision of someone used to dictating notes over the rasp of a printing press. His consonants carry a slight river-town roughness, and the breath at the ends of long explanations catches faintly from years spent among dusty shelves. He does not raise his voice to command a room; he names the next practical step until people follow it.

Speech patterns

Asks what a person means by a particular word before answering their question.
Uses book and binding metaphors, but catches himself when speaking with people who dislike scholars.
When explaining danger, gives practical details first and the frightening implication second.
Often starts a correction with, "That is close, but the order matters."

How to play them

Offer useful information freely when visitors are honest about their purpose. Ask pointed questions when they conceal a motive, but do not humiliate them. If someone threatens the library, put a book or person in their care as a test of their priorities.

Goal

Find the missing pages and determine what lies sealed beneath the old paper mill before the magistracy or Olan's buyers reach it.

Motivation

To preserve knowledge without letting powerful people turn it into a weapon, and to make amends for the people harmed by his caution.

Appearance

The Grey Librarian is a broad-shouldered human who seems to occupy more of a room than his height warrants. He stands close when listening, not to intimidate but because he learned to hear testimony in crowded reading halls. His wool coat has a nap polished smooth at the elbows and cuffs, while the seams are dusted with fine grey paper lint. He smells unmistakably of cold hearth ash, paste, and rain-damp books, and notices only when someone opens a window. He moves with deliberate, economical turns, as if each step were chosen to avoid disturbing a page. His unexpected softness is a tiny, carefully folded paper bird tucked into his collar, replaced whenever it gets crushed.

Clothing

A charcoal wool coat with deep inner pockets, a high-collared linen shirt, soft-soled boots, and a narrow belt carrying chalk, wax, and a folding knife for cutting bindings.

Body language

He leans in to listen, then gives people room only after they have finished speaking. He braces one palm on a table when making a difficult point and taps the edge of his sleeve when choosing whether to trust someone.

Distinguishing features

A persistent scent of ash, paste, and damp paper clings to his coat.
He stands closer than most people expect when listening, then notices and steps back.
Keeps a folded paper bird tucked into his collar and refolds it when nervous.

Personality

12 traits and drives

He is patient with confusion but impatient with evasion; he can be warmly attentive to a frightened stranger and unyielding with a confident official. In good spirits he shares obscure facts as gifts. When worried, he becomes controlling and asks questions that sound like cross-examination. He wants people to feel welcome, yet instinctively guards every doorway and shelf.

Alignment
Lawful neutral

Quirks

Folds a paper bird from any scrap placed in front of him, including receipts and threatening notes.
Smells the air before opening an old book, then denies doing it if asked.
Leaves one chair in every room turned slightly toward the door.
Counts pauses in conversation by touching the seam of his coat.
Uses the corner of a page to mark his place even in books he insists are not his.

Habits

Checks a book's spine and binding before asking who brought it.
Keeps his body between visitors and the restricted shelves, even during friendly conversation.
When troubled, he rearranges nearby objects into rows without seeming to notice.
After a successful negotiation, he immediately asks what the other party needs next.

Traits · 3

He listens without interrupting, then remembers almost every detail.
He prefers a clear rule to a convenient exception, but will break a rule if a vulnerable person is at risk.
He is generous with knowledge and guarded with trust.

Flaws · 3

He withholds information until he believes he has understood every consequence, sometimes leaving others no time to act.
He treats written evidence as more trustworthy than sincere testimony.
He takes responsibility for other people's mistakes, then quietly resents them for letting him.

Fears · 3

That the missing pages concern a danger he helped conceal years ago.
That Olan will be punished for his theft before Uren can make him confess.
That the library will become a refuge only for people who can afford its protection.

Wants and needs · 3

Needs the missing mill pages found before the magistracy learns of them.
Wants to repair his relationship with Nerys without asking her to absolve him.
Needs Olan to stop selling access to restricted shelves before someone dangerous gets inside.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 32 · 30 ft.

He prefers to prevent a fight, using charm or a precise question to learn what his opponent wants. If violence begins, he opens with control or concealment, keeps cover between himself and attackers, and uses Arcane Ward and defensive reactions to stay standing. He avoids harming frightened bystanders and will spend a spell slot to create an escape route rather than pursue a fleeing enemy.

Spellcasting. Intelligence is his spellcasting ability (spell save , to hit with spell attacks). He has four 1st-level and two 2nd-level spell slots, recovered on a long rest.
Ritual Casting. He can cast a wizard spell with the ritual tag from his spellbook as a ritual if it is prepared.
Custom Feature. Marginalia Ward. While carrying his annotated spellbook, he can use a bonus action to mark a creature he can see within 60 feet. Until the start of his next turn, the first attack roll that creature makes against him has disadvantage. He can use this feature three times per long rest.

Spells

Mage Armor (level 1, abjuration). Abjuration. A protective ward surrounds him, setting his AC to 13 + Dexterity modifier while the spell lasts.
Shield (level 1, abjuration). Abjuration. He gains a bonus to AC, including against the triggering attack, and takes no damage from the triggering magic missile spell.
Protection from Evil and Good (level 1, abjuration). Abjuration. Creates a floating magical barrier that provides half cover to a creature of his choice within range.
Thunderwave (level 1, evocation). Conjuration. Creates a sudden thunderous burst in a 10-foot cube; creatures in the area make a Constitution saving throw, taking thunder damage and being pushed 10 feet on a failure, or half damage without being pushed on a success.
Charm Person (level 1, enchantment). Enchantment. A creature that fails a Wisdom saving throw is charmed by him for the duration; the spell ends early if he or his companions harm it.
Silent Image (level 1, illusion). Illusion. Creates an illusory sound or image within range, useful for misdirection or staging a distraction.
Dispel Magic (level 2, abjuration). Abjuration. He ends one spell on himself or a willing creature he touches, making an ability check if the spell is higher level than the slot used.
Misty Step (level 2, conjuration). Conjuration. He teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space he can see.
Mirror Image (level 2, illusion). Illusion. Creates an illusory duplicate of himself; attackers may strike the illusion instead, depending on the result of a d20 roll.
Hold Person (level 2, enchantment). Enchantment. A humanoid that fails a Wisdom saving throw is paralyzed for the duration, with repeat saves at the end of its turns.

Actions

Arcane Quill. Melee or Ranged Spell Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 120 ft., one target. Hit: force damage.
Spellcasting. He casts one prepared spell of 1st level or higher, expending a spell slot as usual.

Reactions

Arcane Ward. When hit by an attack or failing a Dexterity saving throw, Uren adds 3 to his AC against that attack or gains a bonus to that saving throw, potentially causing it to miss or succeed. He must see the attacker or effect and be carrying his spellbook.
Marginalia Ward. When a creature Uren can see within 60 feet makes an attack roll against him, he can impose disadvantage on that roll by tracing a quick correction in the air. He can use this reaction three times per long rest, as part of his custom Marginalia Ward feature.

Services they sell

Research and authentication of books, records, and inscriptions.
A quiet place to study, provided visitors respect the library rules.
Identification of common magical writing and advice on arcane hazards.

Rewards they can give

A chalk-marked floor plan of the old paper mill

Background

Born Uren in the soot-streaked river town of Bellowsend, he was apprenticed to a copyist after his father vanished in a warehouse fire. A childhood spent comparing damaged pages taught him that small discrepancies could save a life or condemn one. At twenty-seven, he discovered that a magistrate had ordered a witness's testimony quietly removed from the town archive. Uren copied the missing account by hand and smuggled it to the accused woman's family. The woman was freed, but his mentor, Master Heddan, was dismissed and died before Uren could repay him. Uren now keeps the Grey Library, an independent collection in the old paper-mill district, and is still in contact with Heddan's daughter, Nerys, who blames him for her father's ruin. His former pupil, Olan, helps maintain the stacks but has begun selling access to restricted shelves to pay a healer. Recently, pages have been vanishing from books about a sealed chamber beneath the mill. Uren has been sleeping in the library and privately investigating before the authorities notice.

Role in the story

A cautious source of history and arcane expertise whose investigation can draw the party into a local conspiracy. He may become an ally, a frustrating gatekeeper, or a witness who must decide whether to expose his own past.
