Wauzari
Wauzari
At the table
Voice
His voice starts in the chest as a rough, breathy bleat, then resolves into clear Common shaped by years of listening to quarry workers shout over stonecutting. A little grit catches on hard consonants, and his breath sometimes whistles through his nostrils when he is excited. His own name comes out round and flowing, unlike the clipped words he uses for work.
He speaks in practical images and rarely uses a word when a hoofprint, stone, or slope will do. His sentences are plain, often clipped while working, but he can patiently explain a route in painstaking detail. He calls Sourbell's quarry bell 'the iron mouth.'
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach Wauzari without sudden movements and show that you respect the workers' choices. He responds to practical offers, honest questions, and evidence that someone has helped the people of Sourbell. He tests promises by asking what the speaker will do if the plan goes wrong. Pressuring him to reveal escape routes or endanger the herd makes him withdraw.
Goal
Free the humans held in Sourbell's quarry camp and help them reach safety without bringing reprisal down on the nearby herds.
Motivation
He believes no creature should be kept in a place it cannot leave, and he cannot forget the sound of the quarry bell calling exhausted people back to work.
Appearance
A rangy, sure-footed feral goat with a coat of coarse russet hair, pale dust caught in its curls, and a dark stripe running from crown to tail. His beard is unevenly tufted with burrs and dried sour-grass. His hide smells unmistakably of wet stone, crushed herbs, and the sharp tang of goat, a fact he considers no more remarkable than weather. He walks with a rolling, spring-loaded gait, placing each hoof as if the ground has personally challenged him. People notice his bright, intent stare and the way his horns are polished smooth at their tips from repeatedly tapping doors before entering. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, neatly folded scrap of embroidered human lace tucked beneath his collar, and handles it with careful solemnity.
Clothing
A patched harness woven from old quarry rope, with a small brass bell muffled in cloth so it will not give away his position. A weather-beaten collar holds the folded lace scrap.
Body language
His ears pivot toward every new sound before his head follows. When attentive, he plants all four hooves and lowers his chin, making his horns look more threatening than his expression. He fidgets by scraping one hoof in short, tidy strokes. A sincere apology makes him look away and chew slowly.

Personality
14 traits and drivesWauzari is generous with food and brutally honest about danger, yet he is not naturally trusting. Around frightened workers he becomes patient and attentive; around officials he is openly defiant and tests every boundary. He wants to believe that humans and goats can stand together, but a lifetime of watching people seize land has made him wary of promises. When confident, he jokes with dry bluntness. When ashamed, he busies himself with practical work rather than explaining himself.

Background
Wauzari was born among feral goats on the shale hills above Sourbell, where the human village's bell marked feeding hours at the work camp as reliably as it marked time. For years he watched the villagers carry quarry stone under guard, and learned that the humans were not owners of the land but debt-bound laborers held by the quarry lease. His life changed during a spring rockslide: he broke through a collapsed drainage culvert and found a trapped child, Iven, beneath the camp's outer wall. Wauzari dragged the child into the hills, then returned with the child's mother, Sela, and a length of rope. The rescue cost him his place with the herd, but it earned him the trust of a handful of villagers. He now runs messages between hidden camps and studies the work gangs' routines, hoping to free the humans without starting a slaughter. Sela helps organize the escape, while Beren, an old quarry hauler, thinks Wauzari's plans are too cautious and may expose everyone. The quarry factor has begun counting missing tools and questioning workers. Wauzari also struggles to persuade his herd that humans are worth risking their safety for.
Role in the story
A mobile guide and morally grounded ally whose knowledge can make an escape from Sourbell possible. He offers information and assistance, but the players must decide whether to risk the herd, the workers, or themselves to make the plan work.
“Wauzari dragged the child into the hills, then returned with the child's mother, Sela, and a length of rope.”
- Faction
- An informal network of Sourbell quarry workers planning an escape, sometimes called the Ninth Cut after an obsolete survey mark on the hill. Wauzari has no formal standing with the workers and remains attached to his feral herd.
