Ruk
Ruk
At the table
Voice
Ruk sounds as if she has spent her life calling across crowded stalls: clear, quick, and a little breathless, with consonants sharpened by shouting over cart wheels. Her laugh starts as a snicker and often breaks into a snort. When she is angry, she speaks faster and more plainly, as if trying to get the important part said before anyone can interrupt.
Her voice is bright and quick, with a slightly breathy edge from running and talking at the same time. Years of calling over market noise have given her crisp, emphatic consonants; she sometimes swallows the ends of words when excited. She laughs in short bursts that become a snort if she tries to suppress them. When she is frightened, her words tumble out faster, but when comforting a younger child she slows down and gives every word room.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Ruk responds warmly to kindness and practical help. She tests strangers with harmless jokes and small favors before trusting them with personal problems. Treat her as a child with agency, not as a mascot: she can offer street knowledge and courage, but she needs adults to take responsibility for dangerous situations.
Goal
Keep Tov's market stall and make Bent Ford a place where hungry children can find a warm meal without having to beg.
Motivation
Ruk wants to prove that being small and troublesome can still be useful, and that a neighborhood can look after its own.
Appearance
A small, quick-moving goblin child with bright golden eyes that seem to catch every scrap of lamplight. Her vivid pink hair is chopped unevenly around her ears and sticks up in soft, stubborn tufts, usually held flat on one side by a bent spoon. Her wide mouth shows tiny, crowded teeth, and her lower jaw shifts sideways when she concentrates on chewing. She smells strongly of wet wool, onion skins, and the peppermint sweets she keeps hidden in her pockets; she knows about the peppermint and insists it cancels out the rest. She moves with a springy, side-stepping gait, as if every paving stone might be a game. The unexpected detail: she carries a tiny, painstakingly mended embroidery hoop and can spend a whole afternoon stitching flowers onto other people's rags.
Clothing
Beggar's layers of patched brown and gray wool, a too-large coat tied with string, a frayed scarf, and mismatched shoes. The inside of the coat is carefully lined with scraps of colorful cloth, each one stitched into a tiny flower.
Body language
She leans forward as if listening with her whole body, head cocked and golden eyes fixed on whoever is speaking. Her fingers are rarely idle: they tuck loose threads, roll a pebble, or test a pocket seam. When embarrassed, she pulls her too-large sleeves over her hands; when determined, she plants both feet wide and squares her small shoulders.

Personality
13 traits and drivesRuk is generous in the moment and mischievous by reflex: she will share her last crust, then immediately hide someone else's hat just to see their face. She acts clownish when a room feels tense, but becomes startlingly direct when someone is being bullied. With children she is patient and inventive; with adults who dismiss her, she performs exaggerated innocence until they underestimate her. She loves being praised, yet distrusts praise that comes without practical help.

Background
Ruk grew up among the rain gutters and market awnings of Bent Ford, where her mother, Tov, mended clothes and her older brother, Palk, carried parcels for stallholders. When Ruk was six, a flood swept through the low market and trapped several people in a locked storehouse. She was small enough to wriggle through a drain and found the hidden latch from the inside. She got the door open, but the flood took the family's blankets and her mother's sewing kit. Since then, Ruk has treated cleverness as something meant to get people out, not merely to get herself ahead. She still steals food when hungry, but often leaves a little extra for someone hungrier. Tov worries that Ruk's pranks will get her hurt; Palk is proud of her and quietly teaches her which guards can be trusted. Now the market's new tollkeeper is threatening to drive the family's stall from its spot unless they pay a fee they cannot afford. Ruk is plotting a ridiculous distraction to win them time, while trying to keep her mother from discovering how dangerous the plan is.
