Voice

A chest-forward, gravelly voice carries a small stone-room resonance, with dry consonants shaped by years of calling measurements over machinery. When worried, she speeds up and stacks exact details together; when angry, she becomes more emphatic and starts assigning immediate tasks.

Her sentences arrive like inspection notes: measured, specific, and built around what can be verified. She names dimensions and failure points from habit, and when someone is afraid she gives them a clear task rather than a soothing platitude.

Speech patterns

Describes problems in terms of load, pressure, tolerances, and failure points.
Asks where a person was standing when something happened before asking what they saw.
Uses exact measurements when stressed, then catches herself and translates them into plain language.
Ends difficult conversations with a practical question about the next safe step.

How to play them

Ibara responds to concrete evidence, careful questions, and respect for the people who maintain dangerous infrastructure. Offer her a useful measurement or help secure a vulnerable passage and she becomes direct and generous with her expertise. Dismiss her concerns as mere fussiness and she will stop sharing conclusions until she can prove them. To win her trust, acknowledge that safety includes both sound walls and the people inside them.

Goal

Restore Chamber Four safely, trace the deliberate alterations in its walls, and determine why the heat failed without sacrificing the people who once depended on it.

Motivation

Ibara needs to understand how a place she knew by touch was changed without her noticing. Restoring the chamber matters, but proving that her trust in its records was misplaced matters almost as much.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Ibara has the compact, weight-bearing proportions of a seasoned tunnel keeper, with a broad back and a careful, heel-first gait that tests every floor before trusting it. Her slate-blue skin has a fine, dry grain like weathered rock, and pale mineral dust gathers in the creases of her knuckles despite her habit of washing them. She wears her silver-black hair in a severe braid threaded with tiny ceramic seal-tags, each stamped with a maintenance date. Her gaze moves over hinges and lintels before it settles on faces. The unexpected detail is a tiny, lovingly painted wooden puffin pinned inside her tool apron, its bright orange beak polished smooth from handling.

Clothing

A heavy custodian's leather coat under a plated work apron, patched at the knees and powdered with pale grit. Seal-tags hang from her belt beside a ring of master keys. Her gloves are cut short at the fingers for handling fine mechanisms.

Body language

She stands as though braced against a pressure change, shoulders square and weight balanced over her feet. Her thumb circles the rim of her stone disk whenever she considers a risk. If a door is unlatched, her attention keeps snapping back to it until someone closes it.

Silver-black braid threaded with dated ceramic seal-tags.
A heavy stone disk that she taps against her palm when thinking.
A painted wooden puffin pinned inside her apron, strangely bright among her tools and dark work clothes.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Ibara is exacting about doors and generous with people who admit what they do not know. Routine steadies her, yet a true emergency makes her improvise with startling speed. She can be blunt when she thinks time is being wasted, then quietly patient with anyone frightened by the machinery she understands. She values evidence over rank, but takes criticism of her own work harder than she lets on.

Quirks

Taps her stone disk against her palm in a steady pattern whenever she is thinking.
Refuses to sit in any room where a door remains unlatched.
Counts hinge pins under her breath, even on doors she has inspected many times.
Keeps the painted puffin inside her apron and checks that it is still there after every dangerous passage.

Habits

Checks the nearest door, latch, or seal before beginning any conversation.
Traces a route with one finger in the air while listening to directions.
Tests unfamiliar floors with the edge of her boot before crossing.
Turns briskly practical when someone is frightened, then remembers to ask how they are once the immediate danger passes.

Traits · 3

She checks every threshold as if it might be the one that fails.
She respects candor more than confidence, especially when the stakes are practical.
She can make a stranger feel cared for by placing a warm tool in their hands, then scold them for holding it incorrectly.

Flaws · 3

Treats an unsecured threshold as an emergency even when more urgent needs compete for attention.
Can confuse preserving a structure with protecting the people who depend on it.
Withholds uncertainty until she has measured it, which can make allies think she is concealing information.

Fears · 3

That Chamber Four will be reopened before its altered passage is understood.
That the people she evacuated will be harmed by a danger she could have found sooner.
That a door she has trusted for decades may have been designed to close on its keeper.

Wants and needs · 3

A safe route back into Chamber Four.
The full maintenance records, including any copies held by Kask.
Someone willing to tell her plainly when the chamber should remain closed.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 65 · 30 ft.; burrow 10 ft. through soft earth or packed ash

Ibara avoids open ground and fights to control thresholds, narrow passages, and stable footing. She uses the disk to stagger intruders, then saves Mason's Strike for clustered foes or a moment when enemies rely on worked stone beneath them. She prefers to disable, block, and retreat toward defensible doors rather than pursue.

Deep-Vault Native. Ibara ignores difficult terrain caused by rubble, loose stone, and subterranean ice. She has advantage on saving throws against environmental hazards, pressure changes, and inhaled toxins.
Architectural Memory. Ibara has advantage on Intelligence (History) and Intelligence (Investigation) checks to identify secret doors, structural weaknesses, altered masonry, or bypassed mechanisms in worked stone and metal.
Custodian's Eye. Ibara adds +9 to checks made with mason's tools to inspect, repair, or understand vault mechanisms and stonework.
Standing Watch. While within 10 feet of a closed door, sealed hatch, or bulkhead, Ibara cannot be surprised unless incapacitated.

Actions

Multiattack. Ibara makes two Heavy Stone Disk attacks.
Heavy Stone Disk. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 () bludgeoning damage. If the target is Medium or smaller, Ibara can reduce its speed by 10 feet until the end of its next turn.
Mason's Strike. Recharge 5–6. Ibara strikes worked stone with her disk, sending a concussive vibration through the floor. Each creature of her choice standing on worked stone within 20 feet must make a Constitution saving throw. On a failure, a creature takes 10 () thunder damage and falls prone. On a success, it takes half damage and does not fall prone.

Reactions

Seal the Threshold. When a creature Ibara can see attempts to rush through a doorway or hatch she is guarding, she can use her reaction to slam the portal or drop a prepared wedge. The creature must succeed on a Dexterity saving throw or its speed becomes 0 until the end of the current turn. If the portal is already moving, Ibara gains a bonus to AC against the triggering attack.

The custodian's master keys
A sealed maintenance log
A painted wooden puffin
A small collection of repair notes from evacuated Chamber Four workers

Background

For three decades Ibara maintained the pressure doors, heat conduits, and stone-lined passages of a deep-vault complex beneath the Frostmelt. Her work was routine until a sudden heat failure left Chamber Four cold and sealed. During the evacuation, she found a set of precise hand-marks cut into a wall she had inspected every season. The marks led to a passage no maintenance plan acknowledged. Ibara chose to stay behind and guide the last workers out through the failing locks; she got them clear, but the chamber's inner door shut before she could follow the marks farther. Since then she has worked to restore Chamber Four and learn who altered the architecture. She trusts the meticulous Phocan pilot Tervi, who has brought her supplies through dangerous channels, but their friendship strains whenever Ibara puts the vault before the people waiting outside it. Her former apprentice, Kask, now works for a surface heat office and insists the chamber should be abandoned. Ibara is still deciding whether reopening it would save lives or repeat the disaster.

Role in the story

A deeply knowledgeable guide to vaults, conduits, and forgotten architecture whose investigation can reveal the signs of deliberate tampering. Her judgment forces the party to weigh infrastructure against the lives it is meant to protect.
