Weshka Suth
Weshka Suth
At the table
Voice
Weshka speaks from deep in her chest, with a dry, smoke-rough edge and the slight breath catch of someone accustomed to working beside roaring bellows. Her consonants land firmly, like tools set down on a bench. She projects naturally across a noisy workshop, and her laugh is a short, startled bark that often seems to surprise her as much as anyone else.
Her voice carries the dry rasp of smoke and years of calling over hammer noise. She shapes words with the same clipped economy she uses at the anvil, often testing a claim with a question before offering her own view. When absorbed in a technical explanation, her speech becomes rapid and densely specific; when hurt, she answers with a plain fact instead of an excuse.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Start with a practical offer or a clear question. Weshka responds well to people who respect skilled work and poorly to anyone who treats her as a curiosity. Earn her confidence by helping with a real task, keeping a promise, or admitting what you do not know. Pressing her about the artifact in public will make her shut down.
Goal
Learn how the artifact was made, without losing her forge, her freedom, or her sense of what a craftsperson owes the people around her.
Motivation
The artifact has overturned everything she thought she knew about who is allowed to make wonders. She wants proof that craft, not pedigree, is what makes an artifact possible, but fears that pursuing the truth could destroy the stable life she fought to build.
Appearance
Weshka is a broad, powerful woman whose real size is easy to underestimate beneath her carefully layered work clothes. She moves with a smith's economical certainty: feet planted, shoulders angled toward whatever needs lifting, and a slight habitual favoring of her left side from years of bracing stock against the anvil. Her palms are thick and ridged with pale calluses; the pads of her fingers are darkened by soot that never quite scrubs away. When she watches a fire, its light catches the tiny metallic flecks embedded in the creases of her hands. People often remember her as still as a doorpost until she moves, then startlingly quick.
Clothing
A dark, high-waisted waistcoat over a loose smoke-gray shirt, reinforced trousers, a long leather apron, and heavy boots. The layered outfit hides her proportions when she wants it to, while the apron is patched with mismatched pieces of leather. She removes the waistcoat to work in the hottest part of the forge.
Body language
Weshka plants her feet as though an anvil might suddenly need bracing. She keeps her elbows close in crowded rooms, but takes up space without apology in her own forge. Her thumb rubs the flat of her hammer when she is weighing a choice. When startled, she turns her left shoulder toward the sound and reaches for the nearest solid object.

Personality
14 traits and drivesWeshka is proud of being able to solve a problem with her hands, yet deeply curious about knowledge she cannot hammer into shape. In a calm mood she is dryly funny and generous with instruction; under pressure she becomes blunt, guarded, and frighteningly decisive. She wants to be seen as a woman without having her competence treated as a surprise, so she dislikes both condescension and praise that makes her strength sound exceptional.

Background
Weshka bought a narrow forge plot in El-Cinor's Second Gate district with years of saved wages and a loan she has nearly finished repaying. She learned the trade from her mother, who taught her that good iron remembers every careless blow. For years, Weshka concealed how strong and large she was beneath layered waistcoats and loose work clothes. She wanted customers to judge her by the work, not decide in advance what a woman smith ought to be. Then Kett, a dwarf with an implausibly cheerful manner, demolished her old forge in a single afternoon. He rebuilt it better, claiming the foundations were unsafe. Weshka was furious, but the new chimney drew beautifully and the bellows worked like a second pair of lungs. Months later, Kett returned with several companions and asked to use the forge overnight. Weshka watched them combine their skills and materials to make a crude, raw artifact: a lump of worked metal that bent the glow of the coals around it and hummed against her teeth. She had been taught that only the secluded High Masters knew the art. The group left before dawn, and Kett has since avoided her questions. Weshka's lease, loan, and reputation are tied to the forge, while rumors of what she witnessed have begun attracting dangerous curiosity.
Role in the story
A grounded artisan and witness to a forbidden-looking craft, Weshka can lead characters toward the truth about artifact-making. Her choices create a moral crossroads: protect the fragile life she built, flee the people who know what she saw, or risk everything to learn the craft herself.
“She learned the trade from her mother, who taught her that good iron remembers every careless blow.”
- Faction
