Bálint Várkony
Bálint Várkony
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, clear edge from years of dust, camp smoke, and calling commands across a yard. A faint rasp catches on hard consonants, but his timing is nimble and his laughter arrives easily. When he gives an order, the same voice becomes clipped and carries without shouting.
He speaks in quick, balanced phrases, shaped by years of bargaining in crowded camps and noble halls. His jokes land like thrown knives: lightly delivered, precisely aimed. He uses military terms when planning and legal language when cornered. His mother taught him a few Elvish endearments, which he slips into conversation only with people he trusts.
Speech patterns
How to play them
He offers a dry joke, then asks what the other person will risk to get what they want. He respects candor more than manners and tests powerful strangers by asking who bears the cost of their plans. If the party treats his soldiers as people rather than disposable muscle, he becomes a candid ally; if they try to buy his loyalty with an unexamined purse, he asks for the contract in writing.
Goal
Keep his company independent and alive long enough to refuse the duke's contract publicly, then expose the coercion behind it without leaving his people destitute.
Motivation
To earn enough to protect his people without becoming dependent on the noble family that treated him as an inconvenient expense.
Appearance
Bálint is handsome in the way of a well-kept sword: polished, balanced, and faintly dangerous. He has olive-brown skin weathered to a fine, dry grain across the nose and cheekbones, with pale salt lines at his temples from years under a hard sun. His dark hair is brushed back with exacting care and tied at the nape; his moustache joins a sharply groomed goatee, both trimmed to the same clean point. He moves with a fencer's economy, hips loose and shoulders quiet, as if every crowded room were a narrow bridge. He smells faintly of clove oil and saddle leather. The unexpected detail is a tiny silver bell sewn inside his left cuff, where it cannot be heard unless he deliberately shakes his sleeve.
Clothing
A fitted wine-red doublet with dark braid, buff leather sleeves, a short traveling cloak pinned to one shoulder, immaculate boots, and a wide belt carrying his rapier and gloves. The clothes are expensive but carefully mended.
Body language
He stands half-turned, leaving his sword hand free and his gaze on the nearest exit. At ease, he rolls a coin over his knuckles; when genuinely angry, he stops moving entirely and fixes his cuffs with meticulous care.

Personality
15 traits and drivesBálint is charming because he enjoys people and wary because he knows charm can be used as a weapon. He is witty in a tavern, exacting over a contract, and bluntly protective when someone weaker is being cornered. He can forgive an honest mistake but digs in hard against a deliberate slight. When tired, his humor turns theatrical; when truly afraid, he becomes calm enough to frighten his own officers.

Combat
AC 17 · HP 112 · 30 ft.Bálint prefers a single opponent he can isolate. He opens with a cutting remark or Panache, then uses movement to keep the duel away from his allies and civilians. He darts in with a rapier strike, relying on Rakish Audacity or an ally's distraction to land Sneak Attack, then uses Fancy Footwork to slip free. He reserves Uncanny Dodge for a hit that would meaningfully change the fight and uses Evasion to cross dangerous areas rather than stopping to trade blows. If the fight turns against his company, he calls a retreat before pride can cost lives.

Background
Bálint was born in the back rooms of House Várkony, the acknowledged but illegitimate son of its second son and a traveling half-elf fencing instructor. His father paid for his schooling and quietly forbade him from using the family name in public. At sixteen, Bálint was sent to serve as a page in a border company, where he learned that a contract can protect the weak or make their suffering respectable. His company was ordered to hold a river crossing while its paymaster negotiated; the enemy offered surrender, but the captain refused because the contract promised a bonus for every day held. Bálint disobeyed, opened a postern gate, and got most of the villagers across before the fighting reached them. He still remembers the faces of the soldiers who died covering the retreat. He later built a reputation as a condottiere who reads the small print and refuses contracts that make civilians the price of victory. His former captain, Mirkó, calls him a traitor and wants repayment for the company’s losses. His half-sister Ilona sends him reports from the family estate and asks him to come home, though neither will admit how much she needs him. His current company, the Bracken-and-Bridge Company, is small, underpaid, and divided over whether to accept a lucrative job guarding a duke’s forced removals.
