Voice

A dry, forward voice shaped by years of dictating notes outdoors, with a faint rasp from wind and chalk dust. He places stress on measurements, directions, and names of places. His name, Lzhev Kurov, is spoken with a dense, consonant-heavy firmness.

His words have the clipped precision of someone trained to dictate measurements over wind and machinery. He tends to lead with a concrete observation, then follows it with a question that makes the listener reconsider the whole situation. When angry, his consonants become sharply articulated and he stops using metaphors. When amused, he gives a dry, brief laugh that sounds like a cough he decided to keep.

Speech patterns

Begins explanations with a concrete image, then circles back to the actual point.
Uses directions as metaphors: 'That is the road your fear has chosen, not the one you must take.'
When correcting someone, asks them to demonstrate their reasoning instead of simply declaring them wrong.
Calls familiar people by the names of places where they first met.

How to play them

Approach him with a practical question or a sincere offer to help someone. He responds poorly to flattery and suspicion, but will patiently explain a danger if the listener is willing to ask follow-up questions. Earn his trust by respecting the people affected by magic, not by admiring his reputation.

Goal

Recover the wandering spellbook, mend the fractures it has caused, and find a way to return to Serev without making Oshun choose between friendship and duty.

Motivation

Lzhev wants to make his choices useful without pretending they were innocent. He is driven by a need to repair the harm caused by the Glass Comet ritual and a private hope that he can still reconcile with Oshun.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Lzhev looks like a tall, wind-worn scholar who has spent decades arriving at places just after the weather turned. He occupies more room than his lean frame should: shoulders angled outward, elbows loosely extended, as if he expects an invisible map to be spread around him. When waiting, he plants his weight on the balls of his feet and rocks almost imperceptibly toward whichever exit is farthest away. His skin is creased like folded parchment, and his long white hair has a coarse, rain-frizzed texture, usually caught in the clasp of his travel hood. He moves in abrupt, efficient starts, then pauses with his head cocked as though listening for a thought still catching up. The unexpected detail: he carries a tiny wooden toy boat and absentmindedly sails it across tabletops, even in tense negotiations.

Clothing

A weather-darkened indigo coat with deep inner pockets, patched at the cuffs with sailcloth. A faded ochre scarf is wrapped twice around his neck, and a battered hood hangs from one shoulder. His boots are carefully resoled, his belt carries chalk, waxed cord, and folded route notes.

Body language

He takes up space without seeming to notice, keeping his elbows clear as if the world were a crowded workbench. While listening, he shifts his weight toward the nearest unusual sound. When unsettled, he steadies the toy boat with one finger and watches it as if it were a compass.

Height
6 feet 2 inches
Build
Lean, long-limbed, and slightly stooped at the neck, with the wiry endurance of someone accustomed to walking between settlements.
Eyes
Muddy amber, with fine dark flecks that make his gaze seem to shift when he turns his head.
Hair
White, coarse, and rain-frizzed, with a few stubborn strands that refuse to lie flat.
Skin
Weathered light olive, browned across the forehead and hands from years outdoors.
Age
About 83, though he insists the number is unreliable because he has lost a year in three separate calendars.
Gender

Distinguishing features

His coat pockets bulge with folded maps that sometimes rustle in a wind no one else feels.
A small wooden boat rides in his hand or on any nearby flat surface.
He leaves chalk arrows at crossroads, but each arrow points toward a different kind of safety rather than a single destination.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Lzhev is patient with confusion but impatient with cruelty. He can be warm and funny over a meal, then abruptly clinical when he notices a magical danger. He dislikes being treated as a legend, yet cannot resist explaining an elegant solution. Around frightened people, he makes himself reassuringly ordinary; around officials, he becomes unnervingly direct.

Alignment
Neutral good, with a habit of treating rules as suggestions when someone is in danger.

Quirks

Sails his wooden toy boat across tabletops and assigns it the job of choosing which way to travel.
Counts doorways by touching his thumb to each fingertip, then starts over if someone interrupts.
Leaves chalk arrows that point toward useful things, such as dry shelter or a friendly baker, rather than toward destinations.
Puts a cup upside down over any map he considers dangerous, claiming it keeps the route from wandering.
Thanks staircases aloud when they do not creak.

Habits

Maps every room mentally, but marks routes with small pebbles rather than drawing attention to himself.
Offers practical help before explaining who he is or why he has arrived.
When a plan fails, becomes cheerfully inventive; when someone is cruel, his humor vanishes at once.
Writes letters to Oshun and seals them, then carries them for months without finding a trustworthy courier.

Traits · 4

He offers comfort through useful work, but struggles to say plainly that he cares.
He is fascinated by new places while grieving the one home he keeps avoiding.
He distrusts authority, yet still instinctively follows the discipline of an observatory scholar.
He delights in impossible questions but has little patience for questions asked only to humiliate.

Flaws · 3

He treats urgent emotional problems as if they were puzzles that can be solved with enough information.
He takes responsibility for disasters even when doing so prevents others from helping.
His curiosity can pull him toward dangerous magical anomalies after he has promised to keep away.

Fears · 3

That his missing spellbook is not lost, but deliberately choosing which pages to return.
That Oshun's silence means the observatory has decided to repeat the old mistake.
That he has become so accustomed to leaving that he no longer knows how to stay.

Wants and needs · 3

Find the missing spellbook before its future-written pages begin altering the present.
Learn whether Oshun is safe without forcing his old friend to betray the observatory.
Find someone trustworthy enough to hear the truth about the Glass Comet ritual.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 144 · 30 ft.

Lzhev avoids a fair fight. He opens with control or escape magic, separates dangerous enemies from one another, and uses force effects to punish anyone who closes in. He keeps counterspell ready when facing enemy casters and uses teleportation to reposition allies as often as himself. If innocents are threatened, he spends high-level magic to end the immediate danger, even at the cost of his own escape.

If destroyed, it reforms beside him after days, but one prepared spell of the DM's choice is lost until he recopies it.
Custom feature. Wandering Interval. Once per day, when Lzhev fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead. After using this feature, he cannot take reactions until the end of his next turn.

A Moment Recalled (Recharge after Long Rest). Lzhev touches one willing creature. The target regains 20 hit points and may immediately end one effect causing it to be charmed or frightened. Lzhev can use this action once per long rest; this is a custom ability, not a cleric spell.

Background

Lzhev Kurov was once the celebrated cartographer of the royal observatory at Serev, where he charted ley lines and taught apprentices to distinguish a genuine omen from a coincidence dressed for court. During the winter of the Glass Comet, he and his closest colleague, gentle-voiced Oshun, discovered that a supposedly harmless navigation ritual was pulling a distant town a few inches out of the world each year. The court ordered them to keep quiet until the next succession. Lzhev broke the ritual publicly, saving the town but tearing open a temporary passage through which his spellbook vanished. He has wandered ever since, following the book's erratic wake and trying to repair the little fractures it left behind. Oshun stayed at court to protect the surviving apprentices; their friendship has become a strained correspondence of unsent letters and intercepted warnings. Lzhev now lives from observatory lofts, roadside shrines, and borrowed attic rooms. His current problem is that the spellbook has begun returning pages in the handwriting of someone who has not been born yet.

Role in the story

A powerful but deliberately unrooted ally, mentor, or source of uncertainty. Lzhev can explain magical disturbances and open paths through impossible terrain, while his concealed responsibility for the Glass Comet disaster gives the party a moral conflict rather than a simple mystery to solve.

“The court ordered them to keep quiet until the next succession.”
