Bemba
Bemba
At the table
“You can still run on that ankle? Good. Stay behind me.”
Voice
A chesty, rasp-edged voice shaped by years of calling over wind and water. His words carry a faint wet click at the back of the beak, and certain consonants scrape as if they have passed over grit. He projects easily without shouting; in anger, he gets faster and more emphatic, hammering out short clauses.
He speaks in compact phrases, with the practical vocabulary of a ferryman and the habit of someone who has learned to be heard over rain, ropes, and rushing water. He names distances by landmarks rather than numbers. When discussing the flood, his sentences become exact and procedural, as though reciting a route he can never stop retracing.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Bemba judges people by what they do when someone else is in danger. Show practical competence, respect the marsh, and tell him what you actually need. He is brusque with boastful strangers but will share food, shelter, and a safe route without asking for payment. If pressed about Kato, he shuts down unless the questioner can offer credible evidence.
Goal
Find and seal the source of the new toxic seep before it reaches the settlement's wells, then discover whether Kato survived the old flood.
Motivation
Bemba wants no family to face the kind of choice that took his brother from him. Under that practical resolve is a stubborn hope that the marsh might still give Kato back.
Appearance
Bemba is a hulking tortle with a long, wedge-shaped head, a narrow hooked beak, and hard ridges that run from brow to neck like the planes of a dragon's skull. His carapace is a sharply faceted hexagon, its broad top plates meeting at crisp angles above flat, vertical side plates. Oxidized green stains the seams; pale mineral blooms stipple the edges. He moves with a surprising, low-slung quickness, pitching his weight forward and planting each claw with the certainty of a grappling hook. His foreclaws are thick and blunt from hauling ropes and digging in poisoned mud. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny paper-and-reed weather vane strapped beside his chest pack, turning it toward every breeze before he enters a new stretch of swamp.
Clothing
A patched chest harness and rugged chest pack sit over his scaled torso, cinched with waxed rope and salvaged buckles. He wears a short oilskin shoulder cape, mud-dark wraps on his forearms, and a belt of reed tubes for samples and maps. A trident and a spare war maul are strapped to the flat flanks of his shell.
Body language
He stands pitched slightly forward, as if braced against a current no one else can feel. His head makes small, precise turns while the rest of him remains still. When impatient, he taps one claw against the flat side plate of his shell. Before a decisive blow, his whole body settles low and motionless.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesBemba is protective but not tender in the usual way: he will carry an injured stranger for miles, then scold them for not tying their boots. He distrusts grand promises yet keeps making small ones he fully intends to honor. In calm company he can be dryly funny and almost patient; when a life is at stake, he becomes blunt, forceful, and difficult to redirect. He wants his daughter to be independent, but quietly hopes she will choose a safer life.
- Alignment
- Neutral good, though he has little patience for laws that protect exploiters.

Background
Bemba was born among the reed-cutters at Silt-Dredgers' Steps, a settlement raised on stilts over a slow, black channel. He learned to pole barges through sucking mud before he learned letters, and grew into the strongest hauler on the water. Years ago, an alchemical runoff surge poisoned the settlement's wells. Bemba led a desperate night evacuation, carrying children through waist-deep sludge while the old ferry ropes snapped behind him. He saved many, but his younger brother, Kato, stayed behind to open the floodgates and vanished in the surge. That loss changed Bemba from a man who trusted hard work to one who checks every current for a lie. He now scouts the ruins upstream, mapping the runoff and escorting anyone who must cross it. His former partner, Sayo, runs the settlement's ferry and wants him to stop risking himself; their daughter, Nemi, secretly follows his route markers and wants to become a scout. Bemba's immediate problem is a new purple-glowing seep beneath the ruined pumping house, and a company of salvagers who insist it is safe to dig there.
Role in the story
A formidable guide and reluctant ally whose local knowledge can lead the party through the poisoned marsh. His investigation ties the apparent environmental hazard to a deeper cover-up, while his family and unresolved grief give the party reasons to care what happens after the expedition.
