Loran
Laborer-Guardian
Loran
Species
Kharvaxi
Appearance
Loran looks built for hauling gates off their hinges, with a long-backed torso, thick wrists, and arms that hang nearly to his knees. He does not stand squarely like a guard. He waits with one heel lifted and his weight balanced over the balls of his feet, as though the ground might tilt and he intends to move with it. In conversation he occupies more space than he realizes, often sheltering smaller people beneath the span of his shoulders. His hands are broad and heavily callused, but he handles cups, coins, and beetles with startling delicacy. The unexpected contradiction is his gentleness around fragile things, which sits uneasily beside the deliberate force of his movements in a fight.
“Deliberate, low, and economical. Loran speaks in short sentences, leaves room between important words, and uses structural metaphors without realizing it.”

Distinguishing Features
His resting posture is a poised half-step, as though he is always prepared to catch a falling person.
A small bronze weight hangs from each ear on thin cords, clicking softly when he turns his head.
His left palm bears a pattern of pale callus ridges shaped like a fan.
He unconsciously lowers his voice when speaking to children, animals, and anyone who is frightened.
He smells faintly of chalk dust, wet rope, and bitter mint.
Voice
“A deep, dry baritone with a slight rasp, as if every word has passed through dust. His laughter is surprisingly soft and arrives late, often after everyone else has stopped laughing.”
Clothing
A sleeveless slate-blue work coat reinforced with stitched leather at the ribs, a high-collared linen shirt, wide charcoal trousers, and soft-soled climbing boots. His belt carries brass measuring weights instead of decorative weapons. A red thread is tied around his left wrist and replaced every seventh day.
Body Language
Loran leans slightly forward even while resting, with his knuckles hovering near his thighs and one foot angled toward the nearest obstruction. When relaxed, he folds himself into chairs too small for him and keeps his elbows tucked in out of apology. When threatened, his shoulders sink rather than rise, making him appear suddenly heavier.
