Gunther
Gunther
At the table
Voice
His voice has a dry, papery rasp from years of handling husks and plant fibers, softened by a faint breathy warmth. Consonants catch slightly, as if each word has passed over a fine mesh. When he is excited, he talks faster and his mouth works ahead of his phrasing; when alarmed, his voice turns plain and clipped.
He speaks with the careful pacing of someone accustomed to explaining how not to damage a delicate material. His words are precise when discussing craft and unexpectedly direct when someone is in danger. Arcadian turns of phrase surface when he is tired, and he often corrects a metaphor if he thinks it might be taken literally.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a useful offer, such as mending a garment or identifying a plant. Be candid about his curiosity, and accept a refusal without pressing. He warms quickly to people who handle his goods gently and distrusts anyone who treats Friedreich as a specimen.
Goal
Keep his clothing business alive through the dry season and find a way to learn about Friedreich without repeating their failed experiment.
Motivation
To preserve the parts of Arcadia worth keeping, while proving to himself that curiosity need not become cruelty.
Appearance
Gunther's face has the soft, shifting symmetry of a mask that has been remade too many times: broad cheeks, a blunt chin, and a smile that settles a fraction late. His skin has the cool, faintly pebbled texture of damp mushroom caps. He stands with his weight pitched forward, as if always leaning closer to inspect a new specimen. In a crowded room, his eyes go first to the seams of people's clothes, then to their faces. He grooms with almost fussy care, keeping his brows trimmed and his hair combed into a neat part, though little green flecks of moss invariably cling to his cuffs. Unexpectedly for a traveling clothes merchant, he keeps a tiny, immaculate folding fan of pressed fern fronds and uses it to cool customers while discussing fabric.
Clothing
Layered moss-fiber garments in muted greens and bark browns: a close-woven vest, a weatherproof shoulder wrap, and trousers patched with squares of different moss textiles. The garments feel cool and velvety to the touch and smell faintly of rain on stone. A belt pouch holds sample swatches wrapped in waxed leaves.
Body language
He inclines his head toward whoever is speaking, but his gaze often drifts to their collars, hems, and sleeves. When pleased, he rubs thumb and forefinger together as if testing a thread. When uneasy, he plants both hands on the counter to keep from leaning too close.

Possessions
Background
Gunther spent much of his life in Arcadia, where beauty could be a law as binding as gravity and a courtesy might conceal a trap. He learned to cultivate and stitch moss into jackets, wraps, and soft-soled shoes, first as a practical craft and later as a way to preserve a piece of home that could travel. He left after a courtly patron demanded he grow a rare moss that fed on memories; Gunther refused, and the refusal cost him his stall, his lodgings, and a friend who chose the patron's favor. Since settling in the mortal world, he has built a modest trade and become a friend of Friedreich. Their failed possession experiment began as a mutual inquiry into Friedreich's nature. Gunther agreed to serve as a willing anchor, but the attempt went wrong: for a few minutes, he felt another presence press against the edges of his identity. They stopped before either was lost. Gunther still wonders what Friedreich is, but has learned to ask before investigating. He currently struggles to keep his moss stock alive through a dry season and to decide whether an Arcadian message asking him to return is a summons or bait.
Role in the story
A friendly, unsettlingly perceptive contact who can provide unusual clothing, practical craft knowledge, and a personal connection to Friedreich. Gunther's curiosity can draw the party toward Arcadian intrigue, but his friendship and caution make him more than a source of exposition.

- Faction
- No formal faction. He maintains wary, practical ties to Arcadian growers and a small network of mortal clothworkers.
