Vezdan
Vezdan
At the table
Voice
A dry, steady rasp that seems to come from the armor as much as from his throat. His breathing is inaudible until he is unsettled, when each inhale produces a brittle, cold hiss and each exhale leaves a bead of frost suspended before him. He stresses the last word of a sentence, as though setting it down for a witness to examine.
His words carry the dry scrape of a blade drawn slowly from a leather scabbard, with a little breathy rasp at the end of each phrase. His chest does not move when he speaks, but the cold plume makes every sentence visible. Under pressure, he stops using contractions and his breath fractures into short, frosted bursts.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Vezdan first asks why the party entered his crypt and whether they have harmed anyone inside. If they answer honestly, he gives them the ring's history and the names he remembers. He is direct but not hostile toward the king's agents; he insists they distinguish the king's command from the king's interests. He asks the party to promise practical protections for rescued people, not merely victory over the traffickers.
Goal
Help the party dismantle the trafficking ring, preserve proof of its crimes, and ensure survivors are treated as people with choices rather than as witnesses to be managed.
Motivation
To turn his final failure into a chance for living people to survive and speak for themselves.
Appearance
A tall, broad-shouldered human apparition in the tarnished outline of a once-fine paladin's harness. His skin has the dry, pale texture of old parchment stretched over stone, mottled with the gray-green cast of long burial. The edges of his armor and beard blur into drifting dust when he turns. He moves with a measured, heel-first soldier's tread, but his boots never quite touch the crypt floor. Most strikingly, a faint plume of cold breath leaves him with every word, even in the sealed, airless tomb; when disturbed, the plume breaks into tiny suspended beads of frost.
Clothing
A ghostly, weather-beaten surcoat over the suggestion of a mail shirt, fastened with a plain brass clasp. The cloth has the rough, salt-stiff texture of something worn through wet winters. A narrow strip of faded blue cloth is tied around his wrist, a keepsake from the first freed child he escorted to safety.
Body language
He stands at parade rest when listening, hands folded over the pommel of his sword. His head tilts slightly when weighing a claim, as if listening for a distant witness. When frightened or angered, his breath comes in sharp, visible bursts and the frost beads hang in the air around his face.

Distinguishing features
Personality
12 traits and drivesVezdan is disciplined and compassionate, but the compassion is practical rather than soft: he asks what a person needs next, not what sentiment sounds noble. He respects lawful authority while distrusting the comfort it gives the powerful. When calm, he listens carefully and lets others finish. When frightened for captives, he becomes blunt and commanding, then regrets having treated allies like subordinates.
- Alignment
- Lawful good, though his rigid sense of justice can shade into severity

Background
Vezdan served as a royal road marshal and paladin, escorting prisoners and protecting travelers along the northern trade roads. He believed that order was a shelter: laws mattered because the weak could not safely bargain with the strong. That certainty broke during the winter of the Gray Thaw, when he discovered that a licensed transport company was secretly selling people taken from poor villages. His superior ordered him to stay silent until the crown could avoid a scandal. Vezdan disobeyed, freed a wagon train, and brought the surviving captives to the capital. The exposure saved dozens, but the traffickers escaped prosecution by bribing witnesses and shifting blame onto a dead accomplice. Vezdan was killed months later while guarding a courthouse archive that held the evidence. His body was buried in this crypt beneath the old chapel. A necromancer recently disturbed his rest, and the magic that animated him has left his memory clear but his presence temporary. He knows the trafficking ring has survived under new managers and tells the party that a royal order is not enough: they must protect witnesses, find the hidden routes, and make the truth impossible to bury. His former squire, now an elderly magistrate, still carries guilt for abandoning him.
Role in the story
A long-dead paladin encountered in his burial crypt after the party defeats a necromancer. He explains the trafficking ring's history and cruelty, warns that the king's order alone will not protect victims, and gives the party a personal connection to the evidence and its living custodians.
