Heskara Vardzhek
Heskara Vardzhek
At the table
Voice
A low, smooth contralto with a refined accent, a faint rasp, and a habit of lowering volume instead of raising it when angry.
Her voice is low, clear, and carefully controlled, with a velvet rasp that becomes sharper when she is amused. She speaks like a courtier trained to make every sentence carry two meanings, but her private speech is blunt and unexpectedly colloquial. When angry, she becomes more polite rather than less.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Heskara offers useful information before asking for trust. She is polite but never passive, and she quickly identifies which member of a group is compassionate, which is ambitious, and which is merely pretending. She may hire adventurers to find Orsik, retrieve the ledgers, or escort her between safehouses. She rewards honesty even when the truth harms her, but reacts sharply to pity, coercion, or jokes about her body and past.
Goal
Find Orsik, break the curse, and expose House Vardzhek before her child is born.
Motivation
Heskara wants to turn an imposed identity into a chosen life. She seeks safety for her child, justice against her family, and a future in which her body, name, work, and relationships are defined by her own decisions.
Appearance
Heskara looks like a woman sculpted for a formal portrait and then forced to live in crowded rooms. She carries herself with the economical balance of someone trained to cross polished floors in restrictive court shoes, yet she habitually rests one hand over her lower abdomen and shifts her weight onto the balls of her feet as though expecting the ground to move. Her face is composed, angular, and carefully groomed, with a narrow jaw, a broad brow, and a mouth that seems amused even when she is afraid. Her hands are finely shaped but roughened at the palms from travel, locks, and cheap soap. She moves slowly when watched and startlingly fast when threatened. The contradictory impression is unmistakable: everything about her suggests a cultivated noblewoman, except for the alert stillness of a hunted animal.
Clothing
She wears a deep wine-colored traveling dress altered from several better garments, with visible hand-stitching at the cuffs and a discreet side opening for movement. A man's old velvet waistcoat, too broad at the shoulders and repaired with red thread, is worn over it. She keeps one immaculate ivory glove on her left hand, inherited from her former life, while the right hand remains bare for spellcasting. Her boots are practical, scuffed, and expensive beneath the mud.
Body language
Heskara keeps her shoulders relaxed and her chin level, but her right thumb repeatedly rubs the edge of a gold signet hidden beneath her glove. When waiting, she stands with one heel slightly raised and her weight forward, ready to leave. When someone mentions family, her posture becomes perfectly still.

Personality
20 traits and drivesHeskara is observant, dryly humorous, fiercely protective, and difficult to impress. She is warm toward frightened strangers but suspicious of anyone offering unconditional devotion. In public she performs confidence with near-perfect elegance. In private she becomes restless, sarcastic, and occasionally raw with grief. She dislikes being called brave because she considers survival a duty rather than a virtue. She can show remarkable mercy to enemies who surrender, yet becomes cold and exacting when someone threatens children, servants, or people trapped by debt. Her deepest tension is between the control she learned as a nobleman and the vulnerability she has discovered through the life forced upon her.

AC 16 · HP 93 · 30 feetHeskara avoids direct violence until she has identified the most dangerous enemy and the person most likely to make a mistake. She opens with charm, fear, or forced movement, then uses cover and Eldritch Bolt to divide the battlefield. She protects noncombatants and especially children. If seriously threatened, she reveals her noble training, closes distance with the cane, and fights with precise disabling strikes rather than killing blows. She retreats if the battle risks the pregnancy.

Background
Heskara was born Heskor Vardzhek, the second son of House Vardzhek, a minor but influential noble family controlling toll roads through the western passes. He was educated in diplomacy, fencing, accounting, and the quiet violence of court favors. His closest companion was Orsik Belasko, the household physician's son, who became his confidant and eventually his lover in everything but name. When Heskor discovered that his elder brother intended to sell a border village into debt bondage, he stole the family's ledgers and planned to expose him before the provincial council. His brother answered by hiring a curse-seller from the salt caravans. The curse transformed Heskor's body into that of a woman and bound the transformation to a humiliating geas: whenever she tried to claim the Vardzhek name publicly, pain and magical compulsion forced her into silence. Cast out, renamed Heskara by a traveling singer, she survived by working in upscale pleasure houses where her manners, languages, and ability to listen made her unusually successful. She and Orsik reunited three years later. He became her best friend, physician, and the only person who consistently called her by the name she chose. Their relationship deepened during a winter spent hiding from Heskara's brother, and Heskara is now pregnant with Orsik's child. Orsik has disappeared while investigating the curse, leaving Heskara to protect herself, her unborn child, and the evidence that could ruin House Vardzhek. The formative experience that changed her was the first time a client tried to purchase not her company but her silence. Instead of submitting or fleeing, she calmly recited his crimes to the entire banquet hall. Since then, she has treated attention as a weapon and intimacy as something that must be chosen, never assumed.
Role in the story
Heskara can be a morally complex quest giver, temporary ally, political witness, or recurring NPC whose pregnancy and curse make her a target for rival factions. Her personal story can draw the characters into a conspiracy involving inheritance magic, debt bondage, family power, and the difference between identity imposed by others and identity chosen for oneself.
“He was educated in diplomacy, fencing, accounting, and the quiet violence of court favors.”
- Faction
- Formerly House Vardzhek, currently allied with the House of Seven Curtains, the Lantern Couriers, and a small underground network opposing debt bondage.
