Baskara
Baskara
At the table
Voice
A smooth, slightly grainy purr, with the breath kept controlled from years of working in dust and narrow passages. When unsettled, she draws a breath that catches in two dry clicks before she speaks; when amused, a low rumble can color the end of a sentence without changing its precise pace.
Her Common carries an Albanian accent: crisp consonants, rounded vowels, and an occasional rolled r. She speaks in compact, carefully ordered statements, often adding a smug little purr when she catches a contradiction. Her phrasing is shaped by years of calling measurements over echoing work crews, so she tends to specify direction and distance before emotion.

How to play them
Begins by observing the party's equipment, route choices, and whether their story matches visible evidence. She becomes useful quickly when treated as a professional and given time to inspect a site. Direct pressure makes her more exacting, not more compliant. Earn her trust by admitting uncertainty and sharing verifiable details.
Goal
Find who reopened the supposedly sealed tunnel and establish what lies beyond it before another crew is sent underground.
Motivation
To make underground travel measurable and survivable, and to prove that careful observation can prevent the kind of loss that once defined her.
Appearance
Baskara is a slender, long-limbed tabaxi whose dirty yellow coat is crossed by irregular black bands, like old survey marks blurred by damp. Her fur lies sleek along her shoulders but tufts into rough, soot-dulled points at her elbows and tail. Blue eyes, bright as glazed tile, track corners before faces. She moves with a surveyor's economical certainty, placing each paw as if testing a ledge. A brass plumb bob hangs at her throat, its tip polished by years of nervous thumb-rubbing, while the cord has frayed almost through at the knot. The unexpected detail is that she keeps a tiny, brightly embroidered child's mitten tucked into her map case, wrapped with absurd care.
Clothing
A close-fitting charcoal leather vest over a russet wrap shirt, soft-soled boots fitted around digitigrade feet, and a weatherproof map case strapped across her back. Chalk dust and pale clay cling to the hems. She wears no ornamental jewelry except the brass plumb bob.
Body language
Her tail makes short, exact sweeps when she is calculating and goes rigid when she hears a claim she doubts. She angles one ear toward the speaker and the other toward nearby exits. When rattled, her breathing catches in two dry clicks, and her thumb rubs the plumb bob's worn tip until the motion becomes visible.

Personality
12 traits and drivesBaskara is exacting enough to sound smug, yet her suspicion comes from grief rather than contempt. With strangers she is brisk and tests every claim; with frightened workers she becomes patient, explaining risks in plain steps. When tired, she turns cutting and literal. When she trusts someone, she shares her maps and quietly takes the more dangerous position herself.

Background
Baskara learned to map the old underways from her aunt, Sabela, who taught her that a straight line on paper is only a promise until the stone agrees. During a flood-season survey beneath the settlement of Silt Cut, Baskara trusted a foreman's measurements and led a crew into a passage whose supports had been quietly removed. The collapse killed her partner, Suni, and trapped her younger brother, Thesio, for two days before she found a crawlspace out. Since then she checks every claim against the rock itself, sometimes to the point of insult. She now works independently, mapping sealed routes and disputed boundaries. Sabela wants her to return to safer work; Thesio, who survived but bears a lasting limp, resents being treated like a fragile load. The old foreman, Shesh, still controls access to several tunnels and insists the collapse was unavoidable. Baskara's current problem is that recent measurements show a supposedly sealed route has been reopened from the far side.
Role in the story
A practical guide, skeptical witness, and potential ally whose maps can reveal both safe routes and an old act of sabotage.

- Faction
- Independent surveyor; occasionally contracted by the settlement's tunnel wardens, but not formally sworn to them.
