Lalev
Lalev
At the table
Voice
A dry, scratch-edged voice with the papery rasp of leaves rubbed between fingers. Years of calling across windy fields have given his words a carrying, slightly nasal bite. When amused, his carved grin seems to move with the rhythm of his chuckle; when urgent, his voice becomes direct and workmanlike.
He speaks in clipped, practical phrases threaded with farm sayings and sly little questions. His jokes arrive quickly, but the humor vanishes when he gives a warning. He calls people neighbor as a test, not a term of affection.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Start with a joke or a small test, then offer practical help if the visitors seem decent. He is more candid when given a task to do alongside someone than when questioned face-to-face. If the party threatens the farm or mocks its people, he becomes openly obstructive.
Goal
Discover what is tapping beneath the burned barn, keep the farm's remaining seed crop safe, and repay Bek without surrendering the lantern.
Motivation
Prove that a strange little leshy can be more than a farmhand's superstition, while protecting the place that gave him a home.
Appearance
A small, wiry leshy with a squat, ribbed gourd for a head and a body of dark, twisted stems. His papery orange skin is mottled green around the seams, with tiny rootlets at his wrists and ankles. A jagged grin has been cut into the gourd, and the two eye openings glow like coals behind thin membranes. He walks with a loose, loping gait, leaning into turns as if he expects the ground to move. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice the sharp smell of lamp oil and crushed pumpkin leaves clinging to him. He carries a medieval lantern whose dented panes cast a wavering, harvest-orange light.
Clothing
A patched brown farm smock, a short oilskin shoulder cape, twine belt, and mismatched work gloves with the fingertips cut away. His lantern hangs from a hook at his hip when not carried.
Body language
He tilts his gourd head until one glowing eye is aimed directly at whoever is speaking. His twig fingers keep adjusting the lantern's handle or checking its wick. When pleased, he rocks on his heels; when cornered, he plants his feet and lets the grin face forward without blinking.

Background
Lalev sprouted in a compost heap beside a remote farmstead after a lightning storm split the old scarecrow oak. The farmers took him in as a useful oddity: he learned which roots were sick, which fences would fail, and how to frighten crows without wasting seed. He became a self-taught thaumaturge by collecting charms, old sayings, and discarded household objects, then testing which ones made uncanny things hesitate. His life changed when a blight swept through the farm's squash rows. Lalev tried to lure the blight into a lantern trap, but the flame spread to the curing shed. He saved the seed crop, yet the farm's oldest barn burned. He has never admitted how much of that fire was his fault. He now works the remaining fields, trades odd jobs for lamp oil, and keeps a wary friendship with the farm's blunt, practical owner, Togr. His former mentor, a traveling peddler named Bek, still sends him strange charms and expects him to repay an old debt. The farmstead is short on seed and money, and something beneath the burned barn keeps tapping from underground after dark.
Role in the story
A memorable farmstead guide and uneasy ally who can point the party toward the mystery beneath the burned barn. His debt, guilt, and uncertain lantern make him a potential quest-giver, suspect, or companion.
